Decorating: Color schemes, design for dark wood trim?

Decorating: We bought an old 1920's American Four-square style home. It is beautiful, well-built, in great condition. The problem is that myself and my girlfriend cannot seem to decide on color schemes that fit with dark wood trim, and I'm talking really dark, original woodwork. Any ideas? [more inside]

Opinions about a backsplash, please?

Putting in a kitchen backsplash and want your opinion. Doing a stainless steel backsplash behind stainless steel oven/range and white subway tile the rest of the kitchen. Grout is a grey which will work for the SS tile and also for the white subway tile. However, the white subway is 3x6" and the SS tile is sold as 1x2" but isn't really quite 1x2. Our handyguy says it will look bad to have the groutlines not even with each other due to height difference of tiles (SS vs white) but the guy at the upscale tilestore says not an issue. We aren't sure if it will or not. [more inside]

Cheap but Classy party ideas?

My boyfriend is turning 29, and so we're throwing a party and inviting lots of people. We've splurged a bit on food - going to have an italian place cater family-style food - but are hoping to save money in every other respect. Luckily, our condo building has a beautiful gathering room that we're going to use. We're purchased a bunch of wine from Trader Joe's and are hoping to not serve it in plastic party cups, but don't want to buy a huge supply of wine glasses. Are there any creative tricks or decorating ideas that will make us feel classy but won't break our small bank?

Cake decorating ideas without fondant

I am looking for a cake decorating book that does not use fondant (except for things like flowers on top of the cake). I despise the taste of fondant and refuse to cover the entire cake with a layer of it just to have a smooth surface. Buttercream and royal icing, and ideally -- but not necessarily -- also gum paste. I'm getting nuttin' for Christmas

The house I am preparing to move into has a "cosmetic" fireplace. It looks like a fireplace, it's built into the wall, but can't be used as one. What clever decorating ideas do you have for it? I'm game for anything--funny, functional, stylish, classic, clever, funky, hell--even some sort of tasteful heat retrofit--just anything that doesn't involve putting a fire in it (that would probably result in death).

How do you make Victorian white look less pink?

We are in the midst of a kitchen renovation project, and our cabinets arrived. We ordered victorian white, which looked off white in the showroom, but now that it's in our kitchen the cabinets have a pinkish hue. Pink was not what we were looking for. We're doing absolute black honed granite counter tops, and are trying to decide on what color to paint the room and ideas for the backsplash. Here's a link to a picture of the cabinets. The question: how can we subdue, or neutralize the pinkish hue?
