I just rented a new apartment and am basically furnishing it from scratch. One big issue that I am having is that I have no experience decorating etc I have a real refined vision of what I want aesthetically and plenty of pictures, but I am having a hard time achieving it. I also don't always know what things "go" together and what things don't etc I also see something that I like and can't find it in stores. Are there any resources that are inexpensive or free that I can take advantage of? Thank you in advance [more inside]
In a week's time I may have to face a metal circuit breaker box, and floor-to-ceiling electrical piping, sticking out from a wall in my already small studio. I'm seeking decorator-style help. What can I do to make this even marginally less hideous? [more inside]
In the wake of big-time heartbreak (see previous asks if you must), my pets and I are moving from a lovely, bright little house with a yard into a shoddy two-room basement apartment with three windows. How can I brighten up the space, and my attitude? Specifics inside. [more inside]
I'd like my home to look well-put-together, but my interior decorating ability never advanced beyond college-dorm level. I have no idea where to start, and I'm a little overwhelmed thinking about it. I need the most basic, beginner-level, baby-steps, for-dummies advice you've got. [more inside]
Autumn is on its way and I'm looking for ways to make my living room as cozy, homey, warm, snuggly and relaxing as possible... while still keeping it tidy and stylish and without too much clutter. [more inside]
Mr. TEA and I have just become responsible for furnishing a two-bedroom apartment in the Algarve. The apartment is in good condition but entirely empty. We would be furnishing it for family use and possibly for rental. My go-to furnishings store at home (the US), Ikea, is hours away, although I'm wondering if it would be worth the trip just for dishes, pots, pans, and glasses. I speak very little Portuguese, although Mr. TEA is more fluent.
We're in the slow process of stripping back the rooms in our house, and have discovered that the ugly white beam in the middle of our room is actually a wooden beam - great! The only problem is, it's still just one beam in the room, and off-center. I've uploaded a picture here. How can I make this room look less wonky? [more inside]

I want to hang some LP covers on a wall, and remember years ago seeing a cheap little kit that was something like four pieces of clear plastic for the corners, connected by an elastic string X-shape in the back that could hang on a nail. The result was a neat frameless effect that I liked, but I can't find it again. Does anyone know what that kit was and where I can buy it? [more inside]

I now am the proud leaser of an apartment, and more pertinently, of an unfurnished bedroom. Before I go out and say "this looks nice, I'll buy it," what are some good resources, tips, threads, or hacks for furnishing and decorating a bedroom or living space or the like? [more inside]
We are in the midst of a kitchen renovation project, and our cabinets arrived. We ordered victorian white, which looked off white in the showroom, but now that it's in our kitchen the cabinets have a pinkish hue. Pink was not what we were looking for. We're doing absolute black honed granite counter tops, and are trying to decide on what color to paint the room and ideas for the backsplash. Here's a link to a picture of the cabinets. The question: how can we subdue, or neutralize the pinkish hue?
I am renting a room in shared house, which means that, as with many roomies/housemates, the bulk of my possessions have to live in one room. Please suggest blogs or tips for organising and making the place look nice! [more inside]

What's an easy, convenient way to store framed pictures temporarily? (Especially when they're different sizes.) We have lots of framed photos, maps, etc. that we like to switch out every 6-12 months. We want to protect the glass and frames, of course, but ideally we'd also be able to access the pictures and switch them out relatively easily, without having to unwrap some hellish Christmas present of tape and cardboard and padding every time.
One final attempt. Anyone know where I can find this blue vase? [more inside]
I have been wanting to redo the bedroom in blue and chocolate brown, and I really really love this duvet cover, the king-size sky version, although I wouldn't mind if the blue was a few shades darker. Is there something similar but cheaper out there? And maybe made of a sturdier fabric...

HomeImprovementFilter. Also, RiskOfBrainDamageFromPaintFumesFilter. I am purchasing two unfinished wood bookcases, and plan to paint them a glossy red. However, they are so heavy that once I get them delivered (4th floor walkup) I'll need to paint them in my apartment. I'm afraid that painting them in the apartment might be dangerous, fume-wise.
