Decorating: We bought an old 1920's American Four-square style home. It is beautiful, well-built, in great condition. The problem is that myself and my girlfriend cannot seem to decide on color schemes that fit with dark wood trim, and I'm talking really dark, original woodwork. Any ideas?

I am moving into a large windowless room in the middle of a nice industrial loft apartment. I need help figuring out how to make it an airy, light, pleasant place to be. I would love to hear suggestions for aesthetic solutions to make it feel light and airy, as well as what you would do to the walls of this space construction-wise (windows? vents?).

The house I am preparing to move into has a "cosmetic" fireplace. It looks like a fireplace, it's built into the wall, but can't be used as one. What clever decorating ideas do you have for it? I'm game for anything--funny, functional, stylish, classic, clever, funky, hell--even some sort of tasteful heat retrofit--just anything that doesn't involve putting a fire in it (that would probably result in death).

I'd like to do some interior design/cozying to my sailboat's interior. Before charging off with a sewing machine and some rubber cement, I thought it might be good to seek some advice. Got any?

I want to paint one of the walls in my bedroom so that it gives the impression of flowing or moving water. The idea is to give a kind of mountain stream effect by:
*putting river rocks along the edge of the wall by the floor
*by making a small floor indoor water fountain with the same rocks for the middle of the wall.
How can I get this effect on the wall?

Is there any aesthetically pleasing way to arrange two computers (and desks, office chairs), a TV (and table), and a big comfy couch in a single room. I'm always embarrassed at the ugliness of my functional apartment when people come over.

Fear of decorating: Is there actually good interior design software? I'm looking for something that lets me visualize room dimensions, colors, textures, materials, furniture dimensions, actual furniture, etc. I'm using Windows XP.
