What can I add to my apartment door that is NOT distastefully preppy, hideous, ghetto fabulous, arrives with an invisible "steal me" voice, or requires a million screw holes? I never thought that I would struggle to come up with a decorating idea! But I am. I like colorful, but minimalist designs, but otherwise I am open-minded. Feel free to post links to galleries of door decor(not pinterest unless it's a specific diy), photos or make suggestions based on your own projects. Sometimes a touch of inspiration is all that's needed. [more inside]
I am decorating a new apartment and would like to put some nice pieces of art on the walls. I love some of the photographs in the Library of Congress collection and have thought about having them blown up and printed high-res. Which brings me to my question: What are the best high-res images (in the public domain) floating around the Internet? Or collections of public domain high-res images that I can turn into posters?
I like looking at Apartment Therapy for tours and DIY ideas but it's gone annoying and stale. What are some other decor blogs with fresher content? [more inside]

I recently moved to (West) London from overseas and have to do some reasonably major renovation work on a 2-bed flat. This will include re-doing the floors, removing the dreaded "woodchip" wallpaper and therefore possibly re-plastering, replacing or fixing Artex-ed ceilings and possibly some dated/inefficient windows, and re-doing a kitchen. I am not sure what type of professional to call to get an overall plan and estimates or where to look for such professionals. [more inside]

I am moving into a large windowless room in the middle of a nice industrial loft apartment. I need help figuring out how to make it an airy, light, pleasant place to be. I would love to hear suggestions for aesthetic solutions to make it feel light and airy, as well as what you would do to the walls of this space construction-wise (windows? vents?). [more inside]
I now am the proud leaser of an apartment, and more pertinently, of an unfurnished bedroom. Before I go out and say "this looks nice, I'll buy it," what are some good resources, tips, threads, or hacks for furnishing and decorating a bedroom or living space or the like? [more inside]

Decorating Filter: I'm moving to a new apartment and finally want to rid myself my cheap, student cultch and want to have a more modern, adult decor. Problem One - I don't know what I need to avoid/get rid of to keep my new place looking professional rather than studenty. Problem Two - I don't have a giant amount of money to spend on new items to decorate with. [more inside]

Are there any general rules for interior decorating, with emphasis on making the best use of space? [more inside]
My new apartment has a balcony with some pretty strange dimensions. It's only 3 and a half feet deep (wall to railing) but it's over 25 feet long. I'm really not using the space, I'd like to come up with some cool uses for it. The best idea I have so far is a hammock (there's a pretty solid wooden awning above that I could anchor it to) but I'd almost be afraid of toppling out over the (3 foot high) rails if I rolled over. How can I make this a space that me and my guests will want to use?

I am looking for books and/or magazines with lots of photos of pre-20th Century living spaces. Why, you ask? Because I'm trying to paint the walls of my 115 year-old brownstone apartment in a color that (1) I like and (2) complements the architecture.
