Math question: Converting a number to a different base is easy enough, but how do I convert it backwards if I already know the end result? In other words, if I know that the number in base 32 is "12", then what is the original number in letters and numbers? [more inside]

Does this Dewey decimal-like numbering system seen in requirements documents, site maps and any numbered system where you don't have to rewrite the numbers every time an update is made and looks like 1.2.1.1 have a name? [more inside]

Is there a good way to convert an entire directory of numbered files from hex to decimal notation or vice versa? For example, I'll have files named AK00.txt AK03.txt and AK1F.txt that I want to convert to AK00.txt AK03.txt and AK31.txt. I've considered writing a shell script to do this, but if a solution already exists, I would love to hear about it. Thanks!
