What's the deal with married people being responsible for each other's debts, even ones they incurred before they got married? In most states, are married people really considered to be like one person when it comes to financial matters? I mean after all, you're not "one person" until you get married, so how would you be responsible for past debts of someone before you even met them? [more inside]

If my home mortgage holder is Countrywide (it is), what happens, in practical terms, if Countrywide were to go bankrupt? Would they call the loan, forcing us to get financing elsewhere to cover it? Or would another lender assume the debt without our having to take any action? Or what?

Help me organize my finances. While reading another thread I was struck by the number of people who balance their checkbooks on a frequent and regular basis (like every day), and it made me wonder what's involved. I am one of those paycheque-to-paycheque people (rather student loan-to-student loan) and although my bills are never unpaid, I'm falling behind in other things. [more inside]

I've got two credit cards with interest rates of 21.24% and 23% - both with balances over $5K. Both banks have sent me convenience checks - one with 3.99% fixed APR for life of balance - the other with 0% through August (then 17% after). Can I 'swap' the debt from one card to the other by using a convenience checks to pay the balance and getting lower interest rates? I'm paying my debt off every month - but if I can get it to grow slower, I thought this would be a way to do that.

How should I repair my bad credit? I'm 26, my income ($53k) exceeds my expenses and I have only $1.5k debt, but I was awful about paying bills on time until the last year or so. Now I'm finding it difficult to secure a car loan. I haven't even gotten a credit report because I'm afraid to look at it. I will probably end up talking to a credit counselor, but I thought I'd ask for advice before I do. College kids, don't wait until the utility bill is yellow to pay it. Trust me.
