PC death

Two PCs have died in our house over that past month. Both were old(ish) and neither was much-loved, so no tragedies (we back them up). I've already replaced one (a 7 year old Dell Dimension 8400) and will eventually replace the other -- a Mac mini. Here's my question: any idea why both would suffer similar deaths? In both cases, they seem to boot up, show the first stage of loading their respective OS, then cycle straight into a non-responsive screen with only a tiny square of light (ala the Matrix). Both machines have surge protectors and the PC had a profusion of anti-whatnot software. Any ideas?

Readings for a course on death and philosophy

Philosophical approaches to death and dying. I am prepping a college course; looking for great readings on philosophical questions about death, but also: world religious/cultural traditions about dying/funerals/mourning/afterlife, how people in death-related jobs see their work (undertakers, hospice workers, doctors, chaplains, military/police...), writings of people who have terminal illnesses, psychological research on preparation for dying, etc. [more inside]

Help remembering an old quote about China

While reading about how people tend to care less about deaths that do not directly impact them, I came across a quote that I'm hoping someone here would recognize. I can only remember the basic idea of the quote. It is presented to a European audience, I think sometimes in the last century or two, but not in our recent era, as follows: If all of China were swallowed up whole, Europeans would go on with life without much change. This is all I can remember.

Daughter saw a dead guy

My three-year-old daughter just saw a dead guy. On our way to daycare we discovered a man who had apparently jumped from the top of our apartment building and died. Clearly dead, blue face, blood coming out of ear, but nothing "gory" per se. She only saw him for a second before I turned her away, but it clearly freaked her out a little. I tried to tell her he was just playing, but it's hard to tell what her inner reactions are. I brought her to daycare because I had little choice, and she seemed surprised or confused, like she had seen something she knew was Not Good but had no further understanding of. How can I help her avoid being adversely affected by this?
