Because of the death of my mother just before finals I have an extension on three essays from one class-- that I've put off the entire summer. Should I brace myself and write them, or do I tell the professor that I just want the last semester to disappear even if I receive an F grade?

The reality of humanity and mortality. People write blogs about everything. Are there great introspective blogs from psychologists / psychiatrists and first-responder EMTs? This may end up a little depressing, so skip it if you're sensitive.

My three-year-old daughter just saw a dead guy. On our way to daycare we discovered a man who had apparently jumped from the top of our apartment building and died. Clearly dead, blue face, blood coming out of ear, but nothing "gory" per se. She only saw him for a second before I turned her away, but it clearly freaked her out a little. I tried to tell her he was just playing, but it's hard to tell what her inner reactions are. I brought her to daycare because I had little choice, and she seemed surprised or confused, like she had seen something she knew was Not Good but had no further understanding of. How can I help her avoid being adversely affected by this?

Sadly I lost a friend to a long battle with cancer last night, her husband and teenage children are without any extended family in the area and will rely on some of us for the next while. Two things:
1 - Can you tell me of things that friends and family have done for you in similar circumstances that really helped at the time: large, small, immediately, over days, weeks, months, whatever. We'll sort out food, the pets and cleaning the house but what else can we do?
2 - Any advice on striking the right balance between giving them their space to grieve and being there to support to them?

Three of us moved into a four-floor brownstone on November 1. The next month the landlady died. Since then we've been dealing with her niece, who is very kind and a good substitute landlady. But now there's some familial dispute and it turns either the landlady died intestate or the will simply hasn't been found yet. The niece's lawyer advised her to give keys to the other family members involved, which freaks us all out.

Sacrifice, speech, writing and art: I am interested in the different ways in which a sacrifice, a sacrament, a spoken word and a written word act as signifiers. The notion for instance that the sacrament, at the point of its acceptance, is understood as
becoming the signified. What can you tell me / what has been written about the notions of sacrifice and their relationship to speech, art and the technologies of writing?
