I found a dead rat today, and the trash had literally been picked up hours before. So now I'm going to have a (double bagged, disgusting vermin) sitting in my trash can for a week while the temperatures get well into the "make dead things smell very very dead" levels. Is there anything I can do to stop my trash cans from smelling like death for weeks?
A picture from 1807 in Germany shows what could be a dead guy against a brick wall underneath iron rings and some kind of wreath or animal tail. What is the explanation for this? [more inside]

A friend snapped this photo and is wondering what it is. [more inside]
Our downstairs neighbours are using poison to combat a rat problem. Our bathroom already smells putrid from a dead rat somewhere in the vicinity of the relevant air duct. While the rats rot downstairs, can I block off the vents in my apartment to try to reduce the odour? If so, how can I do this safely, cheaply, and effectively? [more inside]
The iPhone (2010-2015, RIP) in my pocket has finally perished and I have to look for a replacement. I am in southern Ontario and have been dealing with Fido mostly problem-free for fifteen years, but I am open to other suggestions. I am all over Canada frequently for work so coverage, it is a thing. Data is less important - my current plan has the lowest possible amount and I think I have exceeded the cap two or three times in five years. [more inside]
Looking for Lynchian and Herzogian books and authors. [more inside]
We've owned a largish Mistubishi HD TV, for five or six years. The only issues we've had were two: the lamp had to be replaced, and then the set began to shut down a few minutes after we fired it up. We wait until the little green light stopped flashing then fire it up again, and it works just fine. We do this procedure pretty much every time we turn the set on. But that's not my main problem now. [more inside]
I got a pair of blueberry bushes recently. They were potted and intended for ground planting, but I was unable to plant them. I was out of town for a week and a half and they went about that long with little or no water. When I returned, the leaves were brown and crispy and the soil was bone-dry. I put them in the ground and watered them copiously every day, but it's been a few days and they seem no better. Is there anything I can do to revive them, or am I out of luck?

So walking the dogs the other day, Lady zigged while I was trying to text, and my leash hand punched my texting hand, and the phone broke the screen (but not touch sensing). I got a replacement phone (I was due for an upgrade) but it seems ridiculous to have this hardware lying dormant due to one component being borked. [more inside]
I have had this plant for 12 years, I am attached to it. I don't know what kind of a plant it is, but it is in rough shape. [more inside]

About a week ago, the subwoofer attached to my Onkyo SR304 receiver made ominous popping sounds even when its audio input signal was removed. First time in 5 years. Now it makes no sounds, but the little green light on the front comes on and the fuse appears okay. Do you think the subwoofer died a natural death, or was foul play involved?---for example, do you think some kind of grounding problem caused its demise?
Way back in 2008, I started logging my son's milestones and growth on totspot.com, which mysterious closed earlier this year. (Here's their defunct Facebook page). I'd like to get that information back. How does one effectively contact a dead website?

I'm trying to think of a movie where a man is having an affair with another woman. During one of the encounters while he should be watching his child, the child accidentally dies I think by falling into a pool. After feeling grieved, he goes through some sort of cave in a park and goes back in time and can make things right again. Apparently, there's something weird about the new neighborhood he's in (spoilers so I won't say more). Anybody know what the movie is called?!
An elderly family friend has an original poster (known as BG074) and program from the 1967 Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead concert at the O'Keefe Centre in Toronto. He is interested in selling the poster and program, and I've offered to help out. According to Wolfgang's Vault, "BG074 is among the rarest of posters. There are hard to verify stories that the original cache of posters was confiscated at the Canadian border by border patrol, but whether the posters were seized or simply put away by contented Canadians, this summer concert made a big impression." Accordingly, I've seen auctions and online memorabilia stores listing this poster in the $5,000 and up range, and the program for close to $1,000. What is the best way to authenticate and sell these items? I contacted Wolfgang's Vault but they don't normally purchase individual items, and the art dealers I've been in touch with don't deal with rock memorabilia. Is there a Sotheby's of rock? Is eBay even worth considering?
After eating lunch at a friends house today I was shocked to see that his dog was chewing on a fleshy dear head found in the woods. Now I'm worried that I could have contracted worms from the dog if it had been chewing on the head before it licked my hand when I arrived. Is there anything I can do early on to prevent infection? I don't want worms in my stomach, brain, or anywhere else!

My African-American son has darkish brown skin, say, like Eddie Murphy or Will Smith. For Halloween, he wants to be a dead soccer player, not exactly a zombie, though. How do I do this? [more inside]
Can anyone tell me the name of the Scandinavian movie that has people’s deceased friends and relatives returning from the dead? Only they’re not zombies — they look rather well, in fact — and seem rather confused about why and how they’ve managed to return. They try to go on with their lives, taking jobs, resuming family duties… but strains appear, and social tensions. Plus, they just *aren’t* quite the same as they were before. [more inside]

I'm working as a producer in New York on a mid-scale documentary that is exploring the way we as a culture relate to death. I was having breakfast this morning with the director when we both realised that neither of us has actually ever been in a room with a dead body. Now, I realise that this is an incredibly odd question, but I'm really not sure how to go about arranging it. We would like to see a dead body before it has been attended by funeral directors and if possible to film our reactions to it while in the room, but more importantly have the experience of seeing one and filming our expectations and reactions. I'm assuming I can't just ring up the NYC morgue and ask. Anyone have any ideas about the best and most respectful way to do this?
There is a dead deer under my deck. Who do I call to get rid of it? [more inside]
Dead actors and alternate universes? Does anyone remember this? Folks recall reading death notices of actors, who then turn out not to be dead, and people use this as (somewhat facetiously) an indication of parallel universes? I'm thinking of Robert Duvall in the Apostle, but I'm sure that there's other canonical examples as well.

We had a new grass lawn put in at the start of the year. Before long, it had developed yellow spots: pic 1, pic 2. A suspect has been brought in for questioning. She did not confess, only licking the detective on advise of counsel. Two questions: 1) Is she likely the real culprit? 2) What remedies are available? If it is her, I'd like to note that the whole point of the lawn was so that she could do her business out there. We'll get her a potty pad and encourage her not to go on the grass, but I'm doubtful that she'll always go where we want. [more inside]

I'm looking for flooded woods in New England. I want to film something in a place where dead trees are coming up from the water. I see this frequently along the highway, and it's probably caused by reshaping the land to build the roads. Does anyone know of any parks in New England where this or something similar is happening?

I've always wondered about the lyrics to the Dead Kennedys' song "Moon Over Marin". It seems like one would have had to have lived in California in the late 70s-early 80s to get all the references in the song, so I'm hoping someone who did can explain them. [more inside]
