How much yelling is okay for kids to be exposed to?

Being a parent. What's appropriate in terms of displaying emotions? Of course, more inside. We have a kid. We also both have tempers (with each other, with life). I have a belief that we should not let our tempers get the best of us in front of kid (age 1). My husband doesn't view his temper in the negative way that I do (and never has, even though I've discussed it with him quite a bit). I have asked him to not raise his voice in front of kid. I am worried about the short and long-term effect that this display of "negative emotions" may have on our kid. (Question #1 = is this display of emotion bad for kid? Am I overreacting?) Kid has already begun to react a bit when kid hears arguing, or at least I believe this to be the case.

I grew up in a house with NO showing of emotions, so my own compass on how much "temper expression" is perhaps out-of-whack. How much is okay? (Question #2) (Example: is it okay to yell at other drivers in front of kid? Yell at a football game screw up? What about mommy and daddy disagreeing about something that goes beyond discussion into debate into argument territory?)

If this is in fact a bad thing, any books or other resources that can help us (and especially my husband) understand alternative ways to deal with our emotions (This is question #3)? And question #4, how can I get my husband to understand that it is a bad thing? (When kid is a little older and reacts more strongly to yelling may this do the trick to show my husband that this is a bad thing?) Is therapy a good idea? For the 85% of the time that he is a great dad, it isn't worth DTMFA on something that we can work on. And question #5, if this isn't a bad thing, how can I adjust my reactions to his temper?

Staying in Rio de Janeiro for five days, starting this Saturday (Nov. 8). Forecast looks like a lot of rain and cloudy days. Looking for suggestions for activities not exposed to a downpour. I've been checking the weather forecasts, and it looks like rain rain rain. We were planning on sunshine, lying on the beach or by the pool, and walking around the town. What kinds of things can we do indoors instead? We're athletic mid-30s, we're not the tour-bus type but love to see sights, we enjoy good food and drink, and we can only do so much shopping. Thanks!

I have just started reading 'The Mystery of Capital' by the celebrated Peruvian economist, Hernando de Soto. Having lived in Brazil for many years and seen, on a daily basis, the irrepressible entrepreneurial spirit of which he writes, I can relate to the book and whole-heartedly support the fundamental idea running through it that clearly-defined property rights and simplified procedures for starting new businesses represent the best solution to eradicating poverty in the Third World. I have an 18,000-word Masters in International Business thesis to submit by June 2009. I'd appreciate your suggestions, Metafilter. Originally, I was going to write about the future of Mercosur and the prospect of the emergence of a single-currency zone. The 'informal economy' really interests me though; more than anything, in fact. I majored in International Politics and I spent a lot of time in university reading about free markets and globalisation, supporting the idea in principle but never fully understanding why it didn't always seem to work in practice, especially given the natural capitalism and industry of the greatest part of the world's poor.

I am travelling to India to work with my company for the month of January and anticipate returning to Brazil in February (I'm currently in Spain). I was wondering whether Metafilter, as erudite as you all are, could give me some suggestions for a really fascinating, promising topic into which I could delve deep and write something original involving Brazil, the informal economy and, perhaps, India. Comparisons are often drawn between the two countries, so I think it could be a very happy match indeed. I am willing to read extensively and carry out extensive field work.

I'm looking for a good balance between something sufficiently academic and theoretical on the one hand, and on the other something that will sustain the reader's interest and not end up turgid and too 'ivory towerish'.

I would love to read your thoughts on the book itself, and any suggestions for my thesis.

On a separate but related note, I would like to know the best way to get in contact with De Soto himself.

Despite the recent corruption scandals in Brazil, for the first time since the 1970s, the country is finally showing signs that it is worthy of comparison with its BRIC counterparts. Inflation, the bane of the 1990s, has finally been largely reigned under control, interest rates have fallen to their lowest in living memory, the Brazilian Real continues to rise against the US dollar and BOVESPA - Latin America's largest and busiest stock exchange - continues to grow from strength to strength. How do I, a 23-year-old Brit with extensive experience of living and studying in Brazil, fluent (verging on native) command of the language and a knowledge and understanding of the subtleties of Brazilian culture which never seems to seize to amaze my Brazilian friends, get involved in this exciting new arena?

I'm currently completing a Masters in International Business at a French business school rated amongst the top ten in Europe by the Financial Times, and asides from speaking Portuguese, I also speak Spanish and French. The time has come to seek out an internship - or, even better, perhaps - a job for next year. Ideally, I'd like to work for a British or European company with extensive interests in Brazil and I am certain that, with my credentials, I would be an asset to any employer.

What I want to know, Mefites, is what is the best way for me to realise this dream? Details of relevant companies appreciated greatly. I'm interested in all sectors of business and banking but, in particular, the energy sector, import/export and marketing.

Best of all is if I could, somehow, make some contacts!

I desperately need to find a copy of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes's "The Prodigal Son." My boyfriend loves this Pierre Puvis de Chavannes painting, and I'd love to buy him a copy for his birthday (not till October, so time is not an issue). But it seems absolutely impossible to find. I'm looking for a place to find a rare copy of a theological text as a present for a retiring professor. One of my favorite professors is retiring this year, and I thought I'd try to score a rare copy of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's "The Divine Milieu" or "Hymn of the Universe" as a retirement present for her (or St. Therese of Lisieux's "Story of a Soul"). It'd be great to get it in French (the native language), as she's fluent, and hardcover is a necessity. I've looked on ebay, but I couldn't really find anything; any suggestions for sites / stores to look? I live in upstate Connecticut, but could travel within a couple hours for it if necessary. Cadiz in Southern Spain: your recommendations por favor? At very short notice we are off to Cadiz tomorrow morning for 4 days. Flying in to Gibraltar and out of Jerez de la Frontera. We have booked accomodation and I know the Carnival lasts a week there but never having been there before I have no idea what that means! Any must see places, restauraunts, bars etc.,?

I love the luxurious face cream, Creme de la Mer, but the price breaks my bank; is there an affordable cream comparable to it? When I say comparable, I mean a substantially similar face cream that makes your skin look and feel just as hydrated and nourished. While I feel Creme de la Mer is worth the money, I am unable to afford it! (Who can, anyways?)

I'm enjoying watching the Tour de France once again this year. I'm always amazed at the amount of vehicles, fans, support people and logistics involved in running this race every year. Has there ever been a documentary about the behind the scenes part of the race? I get little bits and pieces during the coverage, but I'd love to see more!

I am looking for a higher resolution version of this picture of the photo-finish in saturday's 8th stage of the Tour de France. GIS and the official site are comming up blank as are some fans site that are covering the tour. Maybe someone has an HD screengrab that is better? I love the effect the photo finish camera does with the spokes and the striped background.
