I'm spending a weekend going from Baltimore to DC. I would prefer to bring my car and drive but I think with the hassle of trying to find parking or actually having to pay for parking in the DC/Arlington area it would be easier to take the train. I'm not too familiar with Baltimore's Penn Station at night and I'm a concerned for my safety if I were to park in a garage and have to return to their at night. Where is it safe to park at night at Penn Station? And how much would it cost? ... Are there any other alternative ideas? Thanks in advance!
Can you help me find Washington Redskins apparel that doesn't feature the name Redskins, the visage of an Indian chief, or a reference to any specific players? [more inside]
We're living in an apartment in Washington DC. There was a leak in the building's water system that caused damage to several units in the building including ours. It took about a month to get it all fixed - drying everything out, replacing the drywall, tearing out and replacing the wood floors. Its all done now. It was a big mess for a while, with fans and dehumidifiers and torn up floors and walls. We thought about moving out but decided it would be more of a hassle than it was worth so just didn't use the kitchen while this was going on. The building's insurance paid for the repairs and the landlord has been very responsive and done what he could to get it done quickly. We agreed that we wouldn't pay rent until all this was settled. The landlord proposes to pro-rate the rent so that we don't pay anything for the days that the kitchen was unusable and we had to put up with the construction. I've tried to figure out what DC rental law says about this ("OS expects to have a complete, authoritative version of Title 14 available for viewing by mid-October 2009") but can't find anything definitive. My question: Does pro-rated rent abatement seem like a legally and ethically reasonable approach?
Do you have any secret spots within an hour or so of Baltimore that you want to share with the entirety of the internets? Unlike previous AskMes, I don't want to go swimming, or deal with a billion tourists. I just want to go read a good book near the water for a day (ideally on a quiet beach, or in a park near a beach).
Would like to drive from DC to Rehoboth Beach, DE on a Tuesday and come back on a Wednesday, staying in a B&B overnight (at the end of July.) Can't find a B&B in that area that allows people to stay for one night instead of two. Do you know of a decent B&B in Delaware near the beach/ocean that would allow two people to stay one night?
I need to get my 2 BR apt in the Washington, DC area painted before I move in. But my only personal-networking options have fallen through: the co-op itself is presently too short-staffed, and it turns out the guy recommended by my realtor can't do it until August. I really need it painted ASAP--although I'd also like a neat, professional job. Is it realistic, to want to get it painted much sooner than August? If so, how can I go about finding a good and reliable painter or company, being new to the area? (Bonus if you have a painter/company in the area whose work you liked and you would recommend!)
I have a ten-year-old boy staying with me for the next month in a Maryland suburb of DC. I would love to hear any and all suggestions for activities in the DC area (especially if anyone knows about any kind of baseball day camp or one day programs, anything baseball related). We have been having fun exploring the area but new ideas would be awesome. Thank you.
I'm subletting my room in a Capitol Hill, Washington DC rowhouse for 1 month. I pay $1250 for rent, and I'm thinking about charging $1050 in rent for a subletter to make sure I get someone for July. My security deposit with the landlord is about $1000. The landlord knows I'm subletting it and is totally OK with it, as long as I'm responsible for any potential damage. So would it be unreasonable to require a $1000 security deposit for a 1-month sublet? How about $750? $500? [more inside]
I'm a writer and I like to write in coffee shops. I'm looking for a coffee shop in DC. I live in Logan Circle and work downtown, but don't mind taking the Metro or a bus anywhere. I'm looking for something a little more low-key than Tryst. Any suggestions? I'd like free wi-fi and a graduate student vibe. No need for anything fancy. This is where I used to go when I lived in Philadelphia and I'd like to find something similar. Thank you!

I need to get to NYC on a Friday evening. I work in Tyson's Corner, I live in Arlington, and I will have my car with me. I would rather not drive, and I don't live near the metro. What are my options if the earliest I can leave work is 4PM? [more inside]
I've just inherited a really gorgeous, old, very high-quality set of pearls from a family member. In addition to making sure they don't need to be restrung so that I don't accidentally break them, I'd actually like to see about breaking the set apart. Because they have strong sentimental value to many of the women in my family, if I could find a large enough quantity of identical pearls, I'd like to have my one set split into two or three sets to give to other family members, each containing some of the original pearls from my necklace. So my question is, who is the best jeweler in the DC metro area to find out whether such a project is feasible? Cost is not really a factor, at least not at this stage of the process. Thanks!

I have a circuit whose output drives a beeper(piezoelectric transducer). It beeps at 1200 Hz 3 volts and a duty cycle of 1.5 seconds. I would like to get a DC whenever the beeping starts and 0.0 volts whenever there is no beeping signal. Can anyone help me design a simple circuit to do this? The end goal is to drive a small DC motor that is used to produce vibration in a cell phone. Thanks in advance, Ortological
Might anyone be able to suggest a good coin dealer in the Washington DC area? Looking to price out a variety of coins - a couple of gold coins, silver coins, random hodgepodge of probably worthless foreign coins, and inaugural coins & medals. Although a bit morbidly opportunist, would it be that much wiser to wait and sell a couple of Reagan/Bush and Carter commemorative coins (with all the Franklin Mint certifications) after Carter & Bush eventually pass away?
I moved to DC recently-ish, but haven't explored the restaurant scene very well. Now I have a friend coming to town next week, staying right near the Dupont Circle Metro station, and I could use some recommendations for places to eat. Can any locals help me out? [more inside]

Asking for a couple of friends living in Washington, D.C. They signed a lease and put down security deposits to rent a two-bedroom condo with move in on Saturday. The guy just called them and said that he's changed his mind, and he doesn't want to rent the place anymore and he is currently living there. What can they do about it since they haven't actually moved in yet? [more inside]

DC/Northern Virginia experts: The other half and I have our first kid-free date night since, uh...too long. We're flexibile on dining options but I would like to find an awesome dessert place. We wouldn't mind driving someplace separate after dinner. The wrinkle is that this is for Sunday night (with a late start due to babysitting scheduling), and we'd like to avoid cupcakes. Hope us?

My birthday's coming up, and I'm looking for a place near Dupont Circle (DC) to get together with friends and co-workers after work on a Friday where many of us can have dinner, but which will also smoothly accomodate some people coming in and out for drinks only (and people ordering their apps and/or entrees at different times.) Basically I'd like to be there for at least 2 to 3 hours but for it to be no problem for some people to come late or leave early, and for people to feel equally welcome either to stop by for a few drinks or to arrive at any point, have dinner and stick around to possibly continue elsewhere afterwards. I'm going to the Presidential Inauguration this month, in Washington DC, and I'd like to solicit tips and tricks to make the day go smooth for me. The last time I was in DC was 8 years ago, and it was for a day trip. What to do? What to avoid? What is security going to be like, will they have food and drink for sale, etc. If you went in 2009, what was it like? How did you survive the day? Also, I have written both of my Senators for tickets, and have heard nothing back from them, so I'm going under the assumption that I didn't get any. Thus, I will probably be watching the ceremony on the National Mall. If I end up here, where's the best place to stand? I'm flying in from Seattle for this, I'm not missing it! [more inside]
