I need a new dining room table. I like early 20th century furniture, but I lean more "grandma's garage sale" than fine antiques. [more inside]
So I have a few days off and just want to get away on a small budget. I have decided that I will take the bus to Washington, DC over the Christmas weekend, and will probably be staying at a hostel or maybe couchsurfing. I will probably stay for one or two nights. I don't have any friends or family in the DC area and, so far, I couldn't find anyone to travel with me, so I will be traveling alone. [more inside]

Hi, wonderful Mefites! I am thinking of driving from DC to New York City for a wedding next Thursday (the 22nd). Google tells me that driving time (from DC to an address on W 159th) is just shy of 4 hours. Considering that this will be a weekend, and holiday weekend, what is a more realistic driving time? (extra driver snowflakes inside) [more inside]
A friend and his family are driving from North Carolina to Washington, DC. I'm going to drive down from Baltimore to meet them for dinner on Friday evening, but I hate going into central DC, so we've agreed to meet in a more northerly region: perhaps Bethesda, Silver Spring or College Park. Unfortunately I'm not too familiar with that area, so AskMe, where should we have dinner? It'll be a party of four adults and three small children at about eight-ish on a Friday night. It should be someplace we can relax and have a leisurely conversation. Easy driving and parking is important. Thanks for the suggestions!
A relative of mine needs to get from the Southwest area of Washington DC, to Union Station, around 3am tonight/Monday am. I haven't been here very long, and I've only caught cabs in cab ranks from the airport or flagged one down, never called one for a late-night pickup, so I don't know what's best. Looking at Yelp for taxicabs, they're full of zero-to-one star reviews and horror stories. So please help! How can I best and most reliably get someone from southwest DC to Union Station in the wee hours?
I volunteered to plan an event for Saturday, 3/29 that will include dinner for about 40 adults. For the most part, planning is in good shape, but we still need a caterer. We're probably looking at a budget of $300-400, serving around 9pm, no booze. There may be a possibility of using the venue's caterer, but I want to get a feel for fallback options. Anyone out there have a good caterer for me, or advice around hiring caterers in general? I have never done this before.
A friend will be travelling to D.C. on business later this week and is thinking of getting a nightcap one night at a local gay bar. She is wondering if anyone would be able to recommend a ladies friendly pub close to Union Station? She's staying at the Phoenix Park Hotel. TIA
Right now I'm at the airport, waiting to fly into DC, and just realized I forgot my charger. I'll see what I can pick up at my layover, but I would like to a) not fry my laptop and b) continue to use my laptop. I would like to buy the charger after checking into my hotel. I will not have a car. Relevant facts: 1) The X220 is the small Lenovo Thinkpad (not touchscreen.) 2) Staying in Dupont Circle 3) No car
Myself and a group of like-minded ladies are in the throes of creating a feminist hackerspace in DC. We're at the point where we need to name ourselves, and haven't been able to get too far off the ground with brainstorming. [more inside]
I am in Washington DC, not feeling well and would like to see a doctor. The problem: I don't have a doctor. How do I go about getting one? [more inside]
When I was a kid in the mid-80s, I had a DC annual that was printed in the UK. Because of the unique way these things were cobbled together (they'd reprint whatever they could get with little regard to continuity), I have no idea how the story ended. For some reason, this is currently doing my head in, so can anyone point me in the right direction? Barely remembered details inside... [more inside]

Does anyone have recommendations for a voice teacher in the DC area, preferably Northern Virginia? I'm a 58-year old male lead singer in a band. The band does mostly rock and country, with bluegrass and Great American Songbook stuff thrown in for good measure. I'm interested in extending my baritone range (I don't have a head voice or falsetto at all) and increasing power and volume. A couple of years ago I bought Roger Love's Set Your Voice Free, and I practice the vocal exercises daily, but that's the extent of my formal practice.
Hello D.C. Mefites. Later this month I'll have half a Monday to spend in D.C. The rest of the week I'm working until dinner time. I'm flying into Reagan around noon on a Monday. I'd like to cram as much Capital type stuff into the afternoon as I can. Any suggestions on what to do? A friend has suggested I rent a bike and cruise around the Mall, monuments, etc. Also, I run and would like to run two or three time the week I'm there. Any suggested multi-mile routes near the Pentagon or Crystal City area? I'm completely unfamiliar with the area, but would really like to avoid the hotel treadmill.

We're living in an apartment in Washington DC. There was a leak in the building's water system that caused damage to several units in the building including ours. It took about a month to get it all fixed - drying everything out, replacing the drywall, tearing out and replacing the wood floors. Its all done now. It was a big mess for a while, with fans and dehumidifiers and torn up floors and walls. We thought about moving out but decided it would be more of a hassle than it was worth so just didn't use the kitchen while this was going on. The building's insurance paid for the repairs and the landlord has been very responsive and done what he could to get it done quickly. We agreed that we wouldn't pay rent until all this was settled. The landlord proposes to pro-rate the rent so that we don't pay anything for the days that the kitchen was unusable and we had to put up with the construction. I've tried to figure out what DC rental law says about this ("OS expects to have a complete, authoritative version of Title 14 available for viewing by mid-October 2009") but can't find anything definitive. My question: Does pro-rated rent abatement seem like a legally and ethically reasonable approach?
Would like to drive from DC to Rehoboth Beach, DE on a Tuesday and come back on a Wednesday, staying in a B&B overnight (at the end of July.) Can't find a B&B in that area that allows people to stay for one night instead of two. Do you know of a decent B&B in Delaware near the beach/ocean that would allow two people to stay one night?
I need to get my 2 BR apt in the Washington, DC area painted before I move in. But my only personal-networking options have fallen through: the co-op itself is presently too short-staffed, and it turns out the guy recommended by my realtor can't do it until August. I really need it painted ASAP--although I'd also like a neat, professional job. Is it realistic, to want to get it painted much sooner than August? If so, how can I go about finding a good and reliable painter or company, being new to the area? (Bonus if you have a painter/company in the area whose work you liked and you would recommend!)
I'm a writer and I like to write in coffee shops. I'm looking for a coffee shop in DC. I live in Logan Circle and work downtown, but don't mind taking the Metro or a bus anywhere. I'm looking for something a little more low-key than Tryst. Any suggestions? I'd like free wi-fi and a graduate student vibe. No need for anything fancy. This is where I used to go when I lived in Philadelphia and I'd like to find something similar. Thank you!

Asking for a couple of friends living in Washington, D.C. They signed a lease and put down security deposits to rent a two-bedroom condo with move in on Saturday. The guy just called them and said that he's changed his mind, and he doesn't want to rent the place anymore and he is currently living there. What can they do about it since they haven't actually moved in yet? [more inside]
DC/Northern Virginia experts: The other half and I have our first kid-free date night since, uh...too long. We're flexibile on dining options but I would like to find an awesome dessert place. We wouldn't mind driving someplace separate after dinner. The wrinkle is that this is for Sunday night (with a late start due to babysitting scheduling), and we'd like to avoid cupcakes. Hope us?

I'm going to the Presidential Inauguration this month, in Washington DC, and I'd like to solicit tips and tricks to make the day go smooth for me. The last time I was in DC was 8 years ago, and it was for a day trip. What to do? What to avoid? What is security going to be like, will they have food and drink for sale, etc. If you went in 2009, what was it like? How did you survive the day? Also, I have written both of my Senators for tickets, and have heard nothing back from them, so I'm going under the assumption that I didn't get any. Thus, I will probably be watching the ceremony on the National Mall. If I end up here, where's the best place to stand? I'm flying in from Seattle for this, I'm not missing it! [more inside]

What off-the-beaten-path activities can I do in D.C.? I would love to do something that makes me feel a bit like a VIP. I want the city to seem like it does in a spy novel. Can you list some bars and restaurants in DC that would be good for a group of 10-12, all 21+?
