Day trip from Krakow

Day/overnight trips from Krakow? I will be going to Krakow in a few weeks for a six day visit. I am planning on spending a day each on the Salt Mines, Auschwitz and Krakow itself and am hoping to do a day trip if possible to another major city. Warsaw is an option but I'm also wondering how easy/difficult it might be to instead go to Budapest, Kiev or any other Eastern Europe cities? I am willing to take an overnight train, spend a day in the city and catch another overnight train back to Krakow. I've done a lot of searching on the internet and am having a difficult time finding enough information to make a decision.

Basically, I have come to the conclusion that as far as cities within an overnight train ride distance, the options I have are as follows:

Warsaw, Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, Prague, Budapest, Bucharest, Bratislava, Kosice, Lviv, Kiev and Odessa

I've been to Prague and Berlin so those are out for me. Is there anyone who is more familiar with the region who could give me an idea on the travel time (via train) for the other cities? Which ones are more do-able than others? Which ones would be the most interesting to see? Are there any that involve hassles that are best avoided? For example, I've read that Ukrainian customs can hold you up for hours. I am a US passport holder if that matters.

Any advice would be appreciated. I'd like to take advantage of my trip to see another major Eastern European city if possible. Thanks.

Wildflowers near Los Angeles?

Wildflowers day trips from Los Angeles? Girlfriend and I want to see wildflowers in the wild. We live in LA, and would prefer to be able to do this on a single day (she's got some furlough time coming up).

Where are the best? What did you like about them? What's can't miss? What specific dates should we shoot for? What's the best season to see which flowers?

I know very little about the plants in Southern California, mostly because I grew up in the Midwest.

And personal experience is very much appreciated—I've found a fair passel of vague pages on the internet (some Parks Service, some not) that don't really have the "Go here the third week of February" specificity that I'd like, being a total newb and all.

Denver in a Day

Boulder? Denver? Help me day-trip to Colorado *THIS* Saturday! So I snatched up an interesting offer: Frontier Airlines had PHX->DEN same-day roundtrip for $59, inclusive. (No add'tl taxes or fees, available ONLY for this Saturday, and only for an hour, at that!)

We arrive in DEN at 9:24am and we depart at 9:20pm.

We *may* have a ride from the airport, but what's the cheapest way to downtown Denver (or Boulder) if not? Where's best to land if we want to get around the city relatively easily once we do, assuming no car?

What's there to see and do for fun eating on a Saturday? Which would you recommend to make the best use of our time? We probably need to be back at the airport by 8:15 at the latest, so take that into account. (No checked bags, clearly.)

I like photography, museums, good food, fun art, cool people, markets, fairs, weird off-the-beaten path stuff, and anything else going. I'll have my brother in tow, who's also down for pretty much anything.

Help plan my one-day itinerary, and understand that very little is a bust for us; it was a $60 thing, so why not, right?

Thanks!

Blogs about the twin cities or Minnesota

I'm looking for your favorite blogs about things to do in or around the twin cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) or in Minnesota in general. In Los Angeles, I read Eating L.A., which is about restaurants around town, and Big Orange Landmarks, which is done by a guy who travels around to all the places on the National Historic Register and takes photos. It hasn't been updated in awhile but the archives are still great. This guy chronicles his walks around Los Angeles' various neighborhoods and his road trips.

So I'm looking for blogs along those lines (or loosely related), but about Minnesota. Or if you have any ideas of google terms I should search for or other jumping-off points, those would be helpful too!

Suggestions for interesting daytrips from Baltimore (other than DC?) Having my first summer free since moving to Baltimore, I'm searching for interesting daytrips or overnights that can be had via car or train, in any direction. I've not experienced anything south of Maryland, but honestly anything with a bit of history, nature or whatever is fine by me. All suggestions welcome, and favorite restaurants, shops, attractions within specific cities as well. Thanks!

Indoor Splen-Dor

Help me find a good indoor day-trip from the Los Angeles area for this weekend. My lady and I were planning on taking a day trip down to the San Diego Wildlife Park this weekend. Unfortunately, it looks like it's going to be raining on Friday and Saturday (the days that we were planning on going). We do not want to spend the day out in the rain, even if it is wussy California rain. I was hoping that the Hivemind could give me some suggestions for some nice places within the same two hour drive radius of Los Angeles that we could visit whilst still staying indoors.

Farm and dairy tours near NYC

Where can I go to take a farm tour, pick fruit, or tour a dairy that is within a 2-hour drive of NYC? I want to escape from the city for a day and get a taste of country life. I'd like to visit a dairy and see how cheeses are made, how milk is processed, and maybe even milk a cow. A small farm that's not so mechanized and massive would be ideal. If that's not possible, I want to visit an orchard, berry field, or vegetable farm and pick something. If both of those scenarios aren't possible, is there an animal farm I can visit?

Fifteen hours and no ideas

Saturday and night in Toronto? A bad flight connection is going to leave me at Pearson from 10 am Saturday through 5am Sunday. Too short for a hotel and too long to be an airport hobo, I think, so maybe a day trip into the city?

Left on my own I'll probably dump my bags somewhere at airport then take a taxi (shuttle? Bus?) downtown for wandering and window shopping but that'll only kill the afternoon part. I'm looking for both day and night things to do or places to wander. I'm easy to please but short on ideas so I won't steer likes and dislikes here.

Any odd suggestion welcome, especially timely things for this weekend only that I might not find in a Google for "killing a day in Toronto."

Where can I go via train that would be an amazing day trip out of NYC? I have never taken a vacation and find myself in a period of brief unemployment. I would like to go somewhere not in NYC for a great day trip. Please don't suggest the beach, I am looking more for a place to get a great meal or two, maybe hit a museum, good walking, etc. I am from the Boston/Providence area so I don't really need to go there, but that is the kinda speed I am looking for . . . Itineraries totally appreciated!

Help California (or western Nevada/Arizona) entertain us!

Please provide some suggestions for an entertaining 1 day road trip based out of Los Angeles. We've already traveled to Death Valley, Salton Sea... A friend and I have been taking 1 day road trips every few months to explore, take photos and experience some of the more ridiculous attractions within striking distance of Los Angeles. Previous trips include: Death Valley, Barker Ranch, The Salton Sea (East and West sides in separate trips including Salvation Mtn, Slab City etc), Mexico boarder towns, Calico Ghost Town, Cave Tours, Ship Wreck in Long Beach, and the Dinosaurs from the Wizard (CALIFORNIA!!!).

We’re out of ideas.

What other fun, odd or otherwise drive worthy destinations can be experienced in one full day from LA (our longest trip was just under 20 hours there and back largely because we were lost on the back roads of Death Valley – but we saved stranded Russian immigrants!). Have to say, LA county attractions are out unless they are amazing as we’re looking to hit the highways or dirt roads. Any other suggestions appreciated!

Hobo dreams

Please recommend me some day/weekend trip destinations from NYC, especially if they involve trains and don't require renting a car. My husband grew up in relatively car-centric, train-free areas, and now that we live in the East he really wants to go on a long train ride and see the rolling countryside, etc. Being more experienced in the ways of train travel than he is, I pointed out that his original suggestion (just get on any random train and ride it all day) is boring and a bad idea. But it would be nice to have some Saturday or whole-weekend trip ideas in reserve, so we're looking for destinations.

We like: food, museums, movies, theater, interesting shopping, quiet beaches, interesting scenery, longish unstrenuous walks, going to states that we haven't been to yet (which includes most of them), activities and amusements that are usually intended for children, and not spending very much money.

We don't much like: when walking becomes hiking, froofy B&Bs, having to rent a car.

Where should we go? Where should we stay? What should we do?

Eastern Europe: Hiking

Cool places to take day-trip hikes in Eastern Europe: suggestions? My brother is coming to visit me in Amsterdam for a couple weeks and, aside from the usual visit to the Netherlands, he wants to take a trip to Eastern Europe. He's pretty into the great outdoors and probably wants to do some hiking. Giving time constraints, I don't think we'll be camping - but aside from that I'm open to new ideas. I hear there's a very nice, old forest in Poland.... he seems interested in this. Any other ideas / indie travel-agencies / suggestions? Thanks!

Gotta Hava Waway out...

I'm in somewhat-central New Jersey on business. I just found out that I will be stranded in a hotel all weekend and would much rather get to Manhattan, Atlantic City, anywhere but here (there is literally nothing here, the nearest Wawa is like a five-minute drive). I know the region in general has great train service, but have a couple of questions about it. First off, I'm the Cranbury-Jamesburg area (Monroe Twp to be exact) if that helps.

I didn't realise until last night that when my travel partner said that she wasn't a tourist, she meant it: she plans to spend literally all weekend at the hotel, eat each meal at the attached restaurant and everything.

I don't know how to drive.

She is willing to take me to/pick me up from the train station, and I know that Princeton Jct is like 12 miles or so away. So far so good.

My only experience with trains is Amtrak and CalTrain (between San Franciso and San Jose). How difficult is the system to use for a total outsider? Ideally I'd like to get to Manhattan at least. Atlantic City or Philadelphia would be nice but aren't critical. I could do one tomorrow and another the next day, after work, whenever. I'm here until next Thursday.

The important thing is that I am able to get back to my area the same day. I know NYC is about an hour by train; how far is everwhere else of interest?

Additional bonus points: I'm really not a "tourist" either...the statue of Liberty and 42nd street are great and all, but the main reason I want to go to Manhattan, believe it or not, is the Virgin Megastore(s), if still there. Last time I was here there was one in Union Square and one in Times Square. Any other worthwhile CD shops in the area? Used options are great, too. If Amoeba, Streetlight or Dimple mean anything to you, that's basically where I spend almost all of my free cash.

Phoenix-Area Daytrips?

I'm looking for ideas for day/weekend-trips to interesting outdoors places around but outside the Phoenix, AZ metro area. Last weekend, my girlfriend and I drove up to the Montezuma Castle/Well national park in Camp Verde. Getting out of the city for a day was a wonderful experience, and we decided we'd like to commit to doing it together at least once a month. Unfortunately, we're both relatively new to this area and don't know what's outside the city that well. We both enjoy day-hiking and photography (and photographing interesting things while hiking) but other activities/types of places are interesting too, so long as they aren't in the city of Phoenix.

Any thoughts?

Getting out of NY for the weekend

Help me get out of the city! I'm looking for ideas for weekend trips to take from New York City, to someplace quieter and less urban, and accessible via public transportation. Any suggestions?

Outdoorsy adventure near Manhattan

City boy gets a car: what are some spur-of-the-moment outdoorsy-type things to do within two hours drive of Manhattan? I have access to a car for the day tomorrow and want to make a little day trip to escape the hustle bustle of the city. I'm thinking of something along the lines of a small hiking expedition within 2 hours drive of Manhattan. Neither myself nor my friends are real hikers, so nothing too perilous or advanced, but it would be great to have a nice rewarding hike.

Any other outdoorsy suggestions would be totally appreciated. I'm up for anything! I'd ideally like to be gone for about 6 or 7 hours, so the shorter the drive, the better.

Chicago in a day

What are some fast and fun things to do in Chicago? A friend and I are going to be in Chicago for one day. We're eating at Alinea in the evening, so basically will only have 6-7 hours in the morning to see the rest of Chicago.

Going up the Sears Tower and stopping by Millennium Park are a couple ideas we tossed around. Are they worth it? What else can we do in just a few hours that is cool? Also, cheap is a plus, since we're going for broke on dinner.

(Note: we're driving down from WI, via Milwaukee, so if there's something really cool to do/see there, that'd work too.)

On the way to Cape May

We're driving from DC to Cape Henlopen State Park tomorrow morning. Anything to see on the way? Any suggestions (besides the obvious) for stuff to do there? I'm packing myself, my wife, and my 12-year-old daughter into the car and heading to the beach for the day. We're planning on hitting the bathhouse at Cape Henlopen in Delaware around 10, hang out all day, then come home when we're tired of it all.

We're taking a cooler and chairs and swim fins and sun screen and all that, but I'm wondering if there are any must-sees along the way, or things to do off the beach in the mid-day heat.

Help me escape Anchorage for 36 hours!

I'll be alone in Anchorage, Alaska next weekend with a limited budget and no plans. Help! I read some of the recent Alaska questions, but since my trip is so short, I wanted to focus on a 4-hour perimeter around Anchorage. I arrive late Friday night, will have a car, and need to be back in Anchorage by 4PM on Sunday. I'm eager to get out of the city, but I'm not exactly an experienced/fit hiker, so camping and rugged day-hikes are not for me. Hope to keep my entertainment/activity expenses under $100 for the weekend. Would love to take some pictures of jaw-dropping scenery, and maybe have a delicious meal or two. Do you have good weather/bad weather suggestions for me?

Montauk-filter?

Where should we stay in Montauk? Is there anything that we should definitely do while we're there? I'm thinking about taking my sweetie to Montauk for her birthday weekend and I'm looking for recommendations.

Are there any restaurants we should go to while we're there? Are there any charming hotels / bed and breakfasts that we should stay in? Is there anything specific we should do while we're there?

And, is it worth going this time of year? Will it be packed?

(We're leaving from NYC and going next weekend.)

Day trips in NW England for my grandmother

Day trip destinations in England's North West, particularly Merseyside -- but with a bit of a catch. I would love any and and suggestions for places to which to take my 92-year-old grandmother (and her sisters) for a short day trip. We have done Blackpool, Wigan Pier, the Merseyside Maritime Museum, a nature preserve not too far from Southport and various other short drives. Something new and different would be wonderful -- but it should be somewhere that is not too crowded and that has level walkways as well as elevators (where appropriate) and ramps. I look forward to some new ideas.
