The impossible scenario we never planned for?

Well, we better come up with a plan. I accepted a job offer at a company I'm really excited to work for in a position I'll excel in and be very happy doing. I've been a sahm for almost a year and out of work for a year and a half. We don't have childcare lined up and I don't know how I'll do transitioning back to work. [more inside]

Daycare vs nanny vs sitter

My wife has recently started working full-time. We are struggling with the decision to enroll our little guy in daycare, hire a live in nanny, or hire a regular babysitter. For the past 21 months my wife has taken care of our baby boy while working from home. We have had some limited babysitting but he's never been to daycare or had a regular babysitter. Over the last month or so my wife has started working more and more and is now employed full time for the same company I work for. [more inside]

Gift ideas for beloved daycare workers?

My daughter is leaving the daycare where she has spent the last 4.5 years. These people have done so much in raising my daughter, from potty training to developing character and teaching moral values. I want them to know how much I appreciate them and I want to give them the most wonderful gift(s) possible, but without spending beyond my means. There are about 20 workers in total although some have spent more time with her than others. [more inside]

Should we pursue this negligence (?) at our daycare?

My son (he will be 3 next week) has a blister on his leg resulting from exposure to bleach while at daycare. Apparently, the cleaning crew left some bleach on the floor, and he knelt in it, and it ate a hole through his pants and left a blister on his leg. The daycare seems as horrified by this as we are. How should we proceed? [more inside]

Cost difference for organic at a daycare center?

Our child attends a privately owned daycare center that has a maximum of 8 infants, 21 toddlers and 30 preschoolers. They follow the US Federal food program requirements and provide breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack. What would be a good estimate for cost difference if they moved from non-organic to organic foods? [more inside]

How to deal with an opinionated, overbearing mom (re my kid & childcare)

My mom has many, many opinions on how we are caring for our son (from what we give him for breakfast to the chores he should have, ugh), and she loves to share them. All the time. Especially in emails (joy). Here's the situation: I am considering going back to work full time but I am sure my mom will voice her displeasure. [more inside]

More structure or more play for a 4 year old?

I have two day cares available for my 4 year old son. One is rather academics based with time slots reserved for reading and math (about 2 hours a day). The other is play based with no formal education included. There are other differences of course, but these are the two basic ones I'm struggling with. I need to pick one. It's never too early to start learning, or is it? If you've been in a similar situation what has swayed your mind?

Finding toddler teacher for early edu co-op Brooklyn

She couldn't care less; should I?

My daughter is almost two, still in diapers. I send her to daycare with a day's supply of diapers and at least one change of clothes. Every single day when I pick her up, she's inevitably wearing her top and diaper, and no bottoms. If I sent her in a dress and tights, she's wearing the dress but no tights. Is this normal? Toddler day care edition

Mini-me is starting day care at a place that takes the toddlers to a local park every day. I'm cool with this (wearing him out FTW!) but they apparently have the class walk there — about six blocks through a dense urban area. I was a little surprised by this practice for such little kids (18-36 months). Husband is really concerned about the whole thing and I'm not sure what to think. Is this actually a totally reasonable thing for toddlers to do in a group care environment? [more inside]

Daycare and oversight of 10-15 toddlers: what level of service to expect

My wife and I have our 2-year-old son in a daycare program that, for the most part, seems pretty good. There was even a recent parent-teacher conference, which seemed pretty great for a daycare facility. But when I picked him up today, he was chewing staples. Two-year-olds put things in their mouths, and it's hard to watch each and every kid in a room of 10-15 toddlers, so how much should we expect from this daycare, or any daycare for that matter? How can I work full time from home and take care of a baby?

I am a 32 year old female and have a full-time job. I've been working from home for 6 years now. My boyfriend and I are talking about marriage and having a baby. We're trying to figure out if it's going to be possible for me to still work full-time from home while also raising a baby. I found a lot of articles about it being possible to cut back on hours or work part-time only, but I don't want to do that (insurance and financial reasons). He works full-time as well and not from home and we want to try to avoid day care (or at least use it minimally). Has anyone ever successfully done this? If so, I'd love to know how. What was good/bad about it?

Toddler not adapting to new age-group room at daycare.

I am worried about my 2.75 year-old daughter. Today is the 8th day she has been in the new, 3-ish to 4-ish age room at daycare. She is now crying really hard every morning when I leave here there (new behaviour, but still normal). But she is also refusing to go to sleep at night, throwing huge fits, jumping out of the crib, clawing at us to get away when we try to rock her, and basically forcing herself to be awake until she is so exhausted she can't stay awake any longer. She won't or can't give me a clear answer about what's wrong. How do I help her? [more inside]

Pick my daycare! What am I missing?

None of my normal "brainstorming bounce-off" people are available to chew over this question with me... and I need to choose a home daycare and confirm one or the other by TOMORROW. Eek!
