Daycare and oversight of 10-15 toddlers: what level of service to expect

My wife and I have our 2-year-old son in a daycare program that, for the most part, seems pretty good. There was even a recent parent-teacher conference, which seemed pretty great for a daycare facility. But when I picked him up today, he was chewing staples. Two-year-olds put things in their mouths, and it's hard to watch each and every kid in a room of 10-15 toddlers, so how much should we expect from this daycare, or any daycare for that matter? How can I work full time from home and take care of a baby?

I am a 32 year old female and have a full-time job. I've been working from home for 6 years now. My boyfriend and I are talking about marriage and having a baby. We're trying to figure out if it's going to be possible for me to still work full-time from home while also raising a baby. I found a lot of articles about it being possible to cut back on hours or work part-time only, but I don't want to do that (insurance and financial reasons). He works full-time as well and not from home and we want to try to avoid day care (or at least use it minimally). Has anyone ever successfully done this? If so, I'd love to know how. What was good/bad about it?

West LA infant care

I'm trying to find an infant daycare in West Los Angeles - and I've applied to 2 places (with a total of 4 locations), but evidently the wait lists are somewhere between 1 and 3 years. At which point my future child will no longer be an infant, and also I need to go to work. LA parents, please help a clueless newbie! [more inside]

Toddler not adapting to new age-group room at daycare.

I am worried about my 2.75 year-old daughter. Today is the 8th day she has been in the new, 3-ish to 4-ish age room at daycare. She is now crying really hard every morning when I leave here there (new behaviour, but still normal). But she is also refusing to go to sleep at night, throwing huge fits, jumping out of the crib, clawing at us to get away when we try to rock her, and basically forcing herself to be awake until she is so exhausted she can't stay awake any longer. She won't or can't give me a clear answer about what's wrong. How do I help her? [more inside]

Pick my daycare! What am I missing?

None of my normal "brainstorming bounce-off" people are available to chew over this question with me... and I need to choose a home daycare and confirm one or the other by TOMORROW. Eek! Which one should I pick? Disclaimer: I got really good vibes from both, liked them a lot, so I can't decide just based on personality and trust. I looked at tons of places, and these were my two favorites. I'm looking for someone to watch my two-and-a-half year old daughter and my eight-month old son. [more inside]

Day Care in Northern Virginia

Due to unexpected circumstances, I'll need to find a new day care for my son within the next 6 months. He'll be 2 at the end of May. The day care he is in now is beyond awesome and is NAEYC accredited, but will be closing at the end of August. I want to keep him in as long as possible, but know that I should probably get him on waiting lists ASAP. [more inside]

Preschool in Chicago

I need information about preschool daycare options in Chicago. Neighborhood is restricted to 45 minutes door to door commute (in good weather) to both the Loop and the Medical District WITH NO DRIVING. Bus or train is fine, but no more than one transfer. This is not a "which neighborhood to live in" question--it's a "What are available preschool daycare options in neighborhoods that meet these commute parameters" question. [more inside]

Chicago filter: Daycare help!

We are 12 weeks pregnant! Hooray! Now down to the nitty gritty, and I'm nothing if not a planner. First time mother, so this is all relatively new to me. I need some advice from the wise hive mind about childcare and the search for it in Chicago. My plan is to take about 3-3.5 months maternity leave and then head back to work full-time. We are due in late January, so I guess we would be looking to start daycare in early May. Question 1: When should I start looking seriously? I know this is early, but I don't want to miss the boat. Question 2: Any good recommendations? We are in the Logan Square area, but I would also be open to places in Wicker Park/Bucktown, Irving Park, or Roscoe Village. Question 3: What should I expect to pay for five full days? (I checked out some rates and they seemed insanely high to me, but maybe I just need to acclimate and adjust the budget accordingly). Thank you, everyone!
