Looking for timestretching software that supports variable tempo curves

I'm looking for an audio timestretching tool that allows me to vary the compression/expansion amount over time. In other words, I'd like to be able to draw a tempo "curve" for the input file—say, starting at −8% speed and remaining there for the first minute and twenty seconds; then gradually increasing speed so that it reaches +12% at 5:33; then remaining steady at +12% for the remainder of the track. Help? [more inside]

Interfacing ASIO to HDMI to drive a 5.1 system from a DAW in realtime

I have Propellerhead's Reason connected to ASIO4all. I want to stream at least four channels via HDMI to a 5.1 receiver for surround-sound monitoring. Is this fairly straight-forward plug-n-play nowadays, or does it require some fiddling? What receivers would your recommend? [more inside]

Wireless DAW transport control without internet?

I want to wirelessly control basic transport functions in my recording software without using an internet-based network or buying a Frontier Tranzport. Specifically, I'd like to use my iPhone 3G to connect to a local network that I will create, including a Mac G4 with OS 10.4.x and an Intel G5 with 10.4.11. How do I do this?

Best jump-in-and-go software for n00b composer on a Mac?

Looking for good composition software on Mac. No actual recorded tracks- it'd be all Kurzweil PC-88 inputted MIDI. Must-haves include fairly easy ability to just jump in and start composin', a music score notation interface, very realistic quality of the instruments (i.e., that my midi inputted keyboard can still sound like a darn good bass guitar), and decent ability to refine the sound quality. Home Studios

Home Studio Questions:
(1) opinions of Pro Tools vs GarageBand or other multitrack audio tools that run on a Mac (DP? Deck?)?
(2) What are the *most* useful home studio items you've ever bought, the ones you wouldn't want to do without?
(3) What are the *least* useful items you've ever bought -- stuff you got and then later thought "well, that was disappointing"?
