My 8yo daughter (in a few weeks) and I love playing Plants vs. Zombies, Angry Birds and other games on Android. We play them on my Xoom, Kindle Fire, and HTC Thunderbolt (phone).
Are there any good games like these (not first person shooters, please. She's 8 and we're Quaker) that would allow us to play against o with each other, one on the Xoom and the other on the Kindle?

My mom is getting married in 3 days to a man she's been dating for two months. She emailed me this news (not too weird, that's our main form of communication) last week and I have been in too much of a state of shock to respond. How do I respond to this? I'm still not even sure how to feel about it. [more inside]

I get the feeling there's a lot of movies that feature an ordinary, plucky, independent single-mom, and her son, and the male hero who enters their life and serves as a father figure of sorts for the son (Terminator 2, Witness, The Day the Earth Stood Still). Are there gender-reversed examples of this, ie, single-father + daughter + heroine? And I'm thinking more of action/adventure type stuff, and not straight dramas.

I have weird feelings of guilt/empty-nest role reversal?? My parents are relatively young (dad is 54, mom is 57), and I just moved out a few months ago 500 miles away, and I am scared to death that something is going to happen to them and I won't be there to save them. Is this psychological torture completely crazy? [more inside]

"I believe in my .45, my shovel and the fact that nobody will ever miss you." — the dad in Clueless to the boyfriend. I'm looking for things to say to my daughters would-be suitors to make them to believe that I might just be crazy enough to deliver them a serious beat-down should they disrespect or treat my daughter poorly. Any other scenes in movies or books that I can reference for my "crazy dad" routine?

I came across an ad on Craigslist that really grabbed my attention. It was from a dad with very little computer knowledge, hoping to set up a website so his daughter would one day Google herself and know about her real dad. He hasn't been with her since she was 2 (2001). Something about it, probably my own personal experiences, really made me want to help. I set up a Blogger account for him so he can post pictures and letters to her easily (he updates the site from the local library). Are there any other things I should try? [more inside]

Last year my dad and my step-mother divorced after 20 years of marriage. It was not an easy break-up, and my dad was pretty devastated in its wake. While it was wrenching for me to think of my dad being alone in his mid-sixties, I cheered myself knowing that my dad, being a very smart, handsome, together guy with a whole lot of awesome qualities, is definitely a catch and would almost certainly end up with someone terrific. I always pictured him being with some fun, free-spirited woman, probably a widow, someone who could match his intellect, stand up to his occasional bull-headedness, and win the hearts of his kids.
He’s now with with someone, alright, but not at all what I’d imagined or hoped for.

I have a bright, wonderful 19 year old daughter who is gradually becoming overweight. I love her dearly and think she's beautiful, but am concerned about future health, social and self-esteem issues if she continues gaining weight.
I have never been critical of her on this issue. Proper diet and exercise is an important part of my life and I've hoped that she would come to emulate me in this area, but that's not happening.
Any advice on how I might lovingly guide her to better diet and fitness habits without pressuring her, or having her resent me, or develop negative body image issues?
