I'd like to reconstitute a years-defunct wiki I used to collaborate on. I've contacted the principals, & our searches for the database backup have come up empty so far. Without having the original database, the simplest path appears to be taking the html & transforming it into, say, an sql dump. So - how do I do that? Are there any MediaWiki, database, or Perl trails to follow?

I'm looking for some help with a math equation / algorithm I'm trying to create. I'm a programmer by trade and not very good at math so I'd like some help with this or perhaps a site where I could pay someone to come up with the equation I'm looking for. I considered rentacoder or elance however I'd be concerned if the companies there had the proper math knowledge. A lot of claims get made on those sites that turn out to be false.

I want to start a log of films I see, to include director, lead actors, genre, date viewed, etc, and my own review of the flick. This is for my own use only. Can anyone offer a recommendation for software to use/how to set it up in something standard like Excel so that I can search on any category but still have somewhat extensive space for my eloquent prose? Might also extend its use to books and music. I'm a mac user.
Thanks!

I've had what I think is a decent idea for a website. Rather than asking someone to "punch it up" in their "spare time" I'd like to learn to do it myself. I know a bit about html and took a turbo pascal class 11 years ago. Since then it's been all humanities, social science, and law. What do I need to learn and what, in your experience, are the best books/web sites to learn from?

MySQL sorting issue. When I have "first name" and "last name" columns, and I'm sorting primarily by "last name." Some entries have only a "first name," and rather than have those end up at either the start or end of the sort, I'd like it to pretend the "first name" IS the "last name" and sort accordingly. Is there a way to do this with the SQL SELECT statement or should I just edit the data?

Computer Jobs filter: My friend recently graduated with a BS in Information Systems (after a long hiatus away from school). He has pre-college experience in database architecture using MS Access, but his other skills (MySQL, pHp) are learned on his own. He wants to find a job as a DBA or a web developer, but doesn't have the 3+ years of professional experience everyone wants. Even if he's able to learn Oracle, Python, Ruby, etc. on his own, how can he prove he knows them without resume experience to back him up?

I'm planning on starting a database freelancing business. I understand a lot of people prefer Microsoft Access or FileMaker. With the current evolving trend of applications going on the web and add to that my somewhat good experience with PHP, HTML, Javascript and CSS I'm seeking a cross platform efficient application environment. This is why I believe Access and FileMaker are not an option, I'm also more experienced with high level languages than I am with Access or FileMaker.
