I'm training for an ultramarathon in the summer and I'm trying to get my weekly mileage totals up. However, there might be several times a week when I'll be mountain biking circa 80 km/50 miles in a day. My question is: if I was to try and convert these cycling miles into running miles, how many running miles would 50 cycling miles be worth? What would the conversion ratio be like? [more inside]

I've seen the well-balanced cycling board, BikeForums.net, and want to know if are there others that also deal with road bikes, fixies, etc. besides the usual mountain bike chatter. What are they? How about the best deals on cycling gear too?

We're headed to Breckenridge later this week and not sure if i want to pack the mountain bikes. Any locals or others with experience have any two cents to add? If it's no problem, suggest any trails that aren't too technical or too much climbing as we're just two currently-mostly-out-of-shape flat-landers here.
Or would it be better to pack the road bike? Decisions.....

I just returned from my second trip to Stockholm and have fallen in love (all over again) with Kronan
bicycles. I don't ride my tricked out hybrid as much as I'd like - it's just too much bike - so I need to change. My plan is to sell the hybrid and buy a Kronan.
But it doesn't look like they're available in the US anymore. The shop that used to sell them here in Chicago hasn't carried them for the last two years. Where can a guy find a Kronan?

How to follow The Tour de France online.. I've been using a plugin for firefox to follow the world cup from a website called Joga.com.. It's pretty cool.. Live scores in the left hand side and popups when there are goal's or a yellow/red card.. Anyone know of anything like this for (what's left of....) The Tour?

I am considering setting getting a turbo trainer like this one
but I am not sure about the skewer. I have a pretty low end mountain bike. Will I have to pull the axel out of my rear tire?

Recommend a good cycling shoe-pedal combo
I just started biking again and i'm really loving it. I have a mid-range hybrid bike, nothing fancy and I don't ride compeditively but more for fun and exercise, all on paved road.
I'm looking to buy cycling shoes and pedals. What i'm looking for in a pedal is one that can serve both a bike shoe and a regular shoe. The guy at the bike shop showed me something that was a hybrid by shimano but i dont remember the model. As far as a shoe, I dont need anything fancy or expensive but not crappy and cheaply made either.
Can anyone give me some recomendations? Also, is there a reliable bike gear review site that has user reviews?

When I ride my bike for extended periods of time (30 minutes or more) the left side of my lower back goes numb. When I dismount, I regain feeling within 5 seconds and there is never any associated pain. Is this bad? [more inside]

My wife and I have really started to get into bike riding lately - nothing extreme or long distance, just urban riding (10 miles or less). I have an old Huffy multi-speed that I'd like to dismantle, clean up, and repaint, but I don't know the first thing about bicycle maintenance and dis/assembly. Help! [more inside]

Jitensha-Filter: I fantasize about moving to Japan to teach English, when I retire from my computer career. To achieve this end, I've earned my TESL certificate, but so far, I'm just a repeat tourist with lots of Nihon travel experience -- but always on foot. Part of the fantasy involves riding a bicycle over there -- and not one of their clunky no-speeds, but my
bicycle. What's involved when a gaijin brings in his bicycle? I'm guessing it's not as easy as retrieving it from checked luggage at Narita, and riding away -- knowing the Japanese, there's regulations to be satisified, in an approved manner.

I have a mountain bike on a resistance roller that I use to workout, and I also use a heart rate monitor to keep my heart rate at 145. If I workout in a cycling position with my hands on the handlebars, it takes much more effort to maintain 145 than if I sit upright with my hands by my side.
Why is this, and does this mean my upright workout is less effective than my bent over one, even though I'm maintaining the same heart rate?

Thinking about doing the five-boro bike ride in NYC this year. I'd like to hear experiences, opinions & advice from anybody who's done it. Is it too crowded to be fun? What kind of shape do I need to be in? What should I bring? How long will it take to finish?

I'm thinking about riding my bicycle
from San Francisco to New York City next summer. Has anyone here done it? What should I know? What routes do you recommend? On which highways and interstates are bicycles allowed? What special things should I see? How do I build a solar-powered charger for a cell phone? I'd spend this year planning, training, and saving money, so I have some time to prepare.
