Cycling/JuryofMyPeers-Filter: when a cyclist crashes into a car because the car turned right into the cyclist's path, is it the driver's fault for not checking their blind spot, or the cyclist's fault for aggressively passing on their right? [more inside]

Jitensha-Filter: I fantasize about moving to Japan to teach English, when I retire from my computer career. To achieve this end, I've earned my TESL certificate, but so far, I'm just a repeat tourist with lots of Nihon travel experience -- but always on foot. Part of the fantasy involves riding a bicycle over there -- and not one of their clunky no-speeds, but my
bicycle. What's involved when a gaijin brings in his bicycle? I'm guessing it's not as easy as retrieving it from checked luggage at Narita, and riding away -- knowing the Japanese, there's regulations to be satisified, in an approved manner.

Tour de France. I do not have access to OLN through my cable provider. I want to be able to hear, (in english), live commentary of the Tour. I figured I would be able to find this on the web but have not been able to so far. I would like also find out what resources others are using to follow the grande boucle, any good blogs I should know about?

I have a mountain bike on a resistance roller that I use to workout, and I also use a heart rate monitor to keep my heart rate at 145. If I workout in a cycling position with my hands on the handlebars, it takes much more effort to maintain 145 than if I sit upright with my hands by my side.
Why is this, and does this mean my upright workout is less effective than my bent over one, even though I'm maintaining the same heart rate?

Thinking about doing the five-boro bike ride in NYC this year. I'd like to hear experiences, opinions & advice from anybody who's done it. Is it too crowded to be fun? What kind of shape do I need to be in? What should I bring? How long will it take to finish?

I'm thinking about riding my bicycle
from San Francisco to New York City next summer. Has anyone here done it? What should I know? What routes do you recommend? On which highways and interstates are bicycles allowed? What special things should I see? How do I build a solar-powered charger for a cell phone? I'd spend this year planning, training, and saving money, so I have some time to prepare.

If I were to show up in Roubaix France the day of the Paris-Roubaix Cycling race
, April 10 this year, would I be able to get into the Roubaix Velodrome without any advance tickets, be able to see and hear the progress of the race then watch the finish live? If this is not possible where else would be a good place to watch the race? I don't know the area at all so trying to dash around the back roads for good vantage points would be difficult.

How fast is a horse? According to this review of a book on bicycling
, one of the original motivations for the development of the bicycle was to find a cheaper, faster, more reliable human-powered alternative to the horse. Did we succeed? I average around 12-15mph on my 10 mile daily bicycle commute - can a horse compete with that?

Having read the other "I want to buy a bike" posts, I'll be quick: Would a new bike in the $200-250 range be so low-end as to be worthless for a 3-mile daily commute? Would I be better off with a used one? I'm the opposite of a serious cyclist.

Bike Rack Etiquette. Can anyone explain why certain asshats insist on parking their bikes horizontally against the front of bike racks, thereby taking up a dozen+ spaces? Am I missing something? Is there some reason beyond the obvious selfishness? Are they oblivious to the fact that pissed off people (like me) will gleefully let the air out of their tires ... or worse?

In keeping up with trying to get back into shape and the coming of warmer times here in the midwest, I am looking to purchase a bike. Haven't bought one in decades and I am getting a bit bewildered by the vast selection out there. Any suggestions on a mid-priced bike for riding on city streets with the occasional foray into state park trails? I'm also fairly poor in the "upkeep" department, so some kind of rugged workhorse would be preferable.

Ever since this
I've been looking into recumbent bikes with an obsessive toy-hunger. At nearly 50lbs, the Bigha is widely denounced as heavy. My question is: how heavy is the average mountain bike, hybrid/commuter bike, and road bike? I can't find overall weight specs on the Cannondale website or the Specialized site. I'm not incredibly into bikes and have no frame of reference. Help me out if you can. How porcine is 50lbs?
