What bicycle training stand should I get?

I have a 1999-era Bianchi Volpe (a touring bike) moldering in my garage, despite having it recently tuned. I'd like to get a training stand to get some low-impact cardio in and also harden myself to actual rides again. Which stand should I get? [more inside]

Is a 5-hour century a realistic cycling goal?

I am a second-generation cyclist. My father, long ago, rode the San Diego Century in 4'52", back when he was a talented amateur road racer in rural SoCal with very little to do besides ride his bike. I am in my thirties and have a nine-to-five in NYC. Can I break the 5-hour mark? [more inside]

Across America by bicycle … in about 8 weeks!

I've always harbored an ambition to ride across the U.S., but I thought I might have to quit my job to do so. My company just implemented eight-week sabbaticals though, so maybe I won't have to! I'm considering doing it next year, and I'd like some advice from people who've done a similar trip. [more inside]

Training a commuter to ride a century

Help transform a cycling commuter into a cycling centurion. Currently I cycle around 20 miles a day commuting, but would like to be able to knock off a century by the end of the summer (miles not km). Am happy with a basic training programme of increasing the miles at the weekend, but should the longer run be on a Saturday, for the recovery day before commuting again, or on a Sunday, for the recovery day from commuting all week? Come, let me show you all my sparkly snowflakes. [more inside]

What's the deal with cyclists using rollers before 100 mile races?

Why do cycling racers always warm up on a trainer/rollers thing before events, even ridiculously long ones? Doesn't it burn up energy they'll need during the race? [more inside]
