This is a cycling and fitness question. Three years ago some punk stole my cheap but lightweight yard-sale-bike and I replaced it with a new Trek 7100 hybrid. It's kind of lumbering and heavy but I like it. Last week I started a class on Mondays that's 4.5 miles from where I live. The ride is 99% flat but nearly killed me last week and this week, too. Help! [more inside]
I've played rugby for almost ten years and after all this time, I want to mix it up a little and do a triathlon. My issue: overweight and not just a little intimidated. [more inside]
After 8 months of cycling 14 miles a day to work and back (I have always been a recreational cyclist) my thighs have stripped off fat I didn't even know was there and built muscle well. But how can I get my calves to do the same? I use SPD's so there is some static engagement, but short of consciously pressing and releasing the pedal will every stroke, how do I engage my calves?
Three years ago, I inherited a solid Biachi road bike from my dad. I'm pretty into it now. I usually bike 50 - 100 miles on the weekends, but as that number has crept up, I've run into some some fit issues. Maybe you can help me out with some conceptual stuff. [more inside]
Tips for urban cycling as aerobic/cardio workout? [more inside]
I have literally (yes, literally) never stepped foot in a paid gym in my life. I'm a 27-year-old male, who (despite being almost rail-thin) is only "in shape" enough to bike-sprint the 1.7 miles to work, then back in the evening. It's time to change that, so I signed up for the small, limited (cheap!) gym on campus. Other than "get the professional help of a personal trainer", what should I do there? [more inside]

Recently discovered spinning and am LOVING it as a workout. Any long time spinners have any tips for success? How many times a week should a person spin? Does it really burn crazy amounts of calories? (130 pound woman) Any other info for the newbie? Thanks so much!
This past weekend, I purchased my first road bike. My long term goal is to cycle to/from work every day. I’ve taken the bike on a few exploratory rides, been humbled by my general fitness level, and came away with a number of questions I hope you all can answer. (Many more details inside. (This ended up much longer than I thought it would.)) [more inside]
