First bike tour in Peru; looking for advice on health, happiness, and safety - in terms of packing for a long cycling tour, and being in Peru generally. [more inside]
My wife and I are getting serious criticism from her parents about activities that are extremely important to us -- endurance road cycling (me) and long-distance running (her). They believe that as parents to a 4-year-old, we are being irresponsible to continue these extra-curricular passions. Are they right? [more inside]
It's time for me to buy a bike, and this bike also needs to work for transporting one or more children. Do you have tips on buying a bike to carry around a little one? [more inside]

What is the cycling like inside the town of Bordeaux? I know the region is bike-friendly, but if I rent a flat in town, can I easily cycle around the city and reach the outlying areas? Is there a bike path along the Garonne? Any suggestions on bike rentals or biking destinations would be appreciated as well.
My bike computer is flaking out (on 2 different bikes!!). Apparently the one I bought 10+ years ago is no longer made. Any recommendations for a replacement? [more inside]
I have to take a bike from Angel to Paddington train station this Sunday afternoon. I've never cycled in London before or taken a bike on the tube. Please help me figure how to do this with both the bike and me in one piece at the end of it. [more inside]
I have a 1999-era Bianchi Volpe (a touring bike) moldering in my garage, despite having it recently tuned. I'd like to get a training stand to get some low-impact cardio in and also harden myself to actual rides again. Which stand should I get? [more inside]
I usually wear a Wahoo TICKR heart rate monitor when I cycle. Recently, our office purchased us FitBit Charge HR wristbands as part of a "get healthy" initiative... They don't really seem to agree. [more inside]
Has anybody tried doing Zombies, Run! on a bike? I hate running but enjoy biking, so this is of interest to me.
I've been some multi-day bike tours, some fancy & fully supported, and some self-guided, with no trip guide or SAG wagon. Both types provide accommodations and transit for your luggage. On the self-guided trips I've thought "I could figure all this out", but I'm at a loss on how to reliably organize moving luggage from A to B. How could one hire a reliable driver just to move the luggage, and how to indemnify such a person? [more inside]
Between 21 June and 18 July I will have finished school and not yet started work. I want to get away, outside, for some if not most of that time. I am based in Toronto. I like biking, hiking, walking, and being outside. I also like cities and reading books and sleeping in. Hope me please? [more inside]

This is not a claims call, but a how are you doing call – as your agent my job is to look after you. I am not getting involved on the claims side of it. I would assume you provided your lawyers info to claims? I don’t have access to that system. I just saw the claim, and was concerned about how you are. It is what we do which is take care of people. If you think this is something you shouldn’t share, then I understand, because I have also been hurt in a accident in the past and know what it is like. My accident ended up paying for my graduate degree. If it was a serious accident, then we should talk about the other protections that you should have in place, such as disability and life insurance. You can’t rely on your employer to take care of you. How do you respond to this email? [more inside]
A friend wants me to join his small road bicycling team. I'm pretty set in my cycling ways and have not been a part of clubs or organizations of any sort for 20 years -- is this something I can just do to be polite without active participation? [more inside]
After 20-ish years of not cycling, I recently bought a bike for getting to work. It's a nice route - about two-thirds of the way is off the roads on dedicated cycle paths, and most of the rest is on quiet streets. But I cycled to work and back yesterday, and the roads just TERRIFY me. [more inside]
I have a new aquarium and an even newer Reddit account. I can't post my question to r/Aquariums till 5 days from now. I have a question about replacing a cartridge in an hang-on back filter and cycling. [more inside]
Last summer, my friend and I rode up a mountain in Glacier National Park. It was freaking sweet, and AskMe had some great tips. This fall, we are hopefully riding all 444 miles of the Natchez Trace Parkway. Have you done this (in whole or part)? What advice can you offer? [more inside]
I am a second-generation cyclist. My father, long ago, rode the San Diego Century in 4'52", back when he was a talented amateur road racer in rural SoCal with very little to do besides ride his bike. I am in my thirties and have a nine-to-five in NYC. Can I break the 5-hour mark? [more inside]
I have the Novara Express 2.0 cycling jacket from REI. It's great! But it's supposed to come with a "Novara compatible hood," sold separately, which I can't find for sale anywhere. Halp? [more inside]

I'm commuting to Palo Alto and am leaving my bike at the Caltrain station. After someone tried to steal my bike last week I'm thinking about renting a bike locker. Does anyone have any experience with these lockers? I can't find any reviews of them one way or another online. I'm a little worried that if I mail them a check for $58 I'll just never hear from them again. [more inside]
This is a cycling and fitness question. Three years ago some punk stole my cheap but lightweight yard-sale-bike and I replaced it with a new Trek 7100 hybrid. It's kind of lumbering and heavy but I like it. Last week I started a class on Mondays that's 4.5 miles from where I live. The ride is 99% flat but nearly killed me last week and this week, too. Help! [more inside]
I am a cyclist in NSW, Australia. At the intersection in this image, I am not sure what I am legally supposed to do (or what my best option is if the legal one is not safe, which I think might be the case). The red line represents off-road cycle paths separate from the pedestrian footpath. I am trying to get from where the first red line (left) ends to where the second one starts (right). Can anyone tell me what I should do? Or who do I contact to find out (or to lobby to improve the intersection for cyclists) - the local council? [more inside]
A friend and I are cycling the California coast, going south from Crescent City to LA starting today. Based on the amount of time we have, we will need to bus a few sections, maybe 200-250 miles or so. Cyclists who have done this route - which sections are missable? Which ones should we NOT miss? What bus/train options do you recommend? [more inside]
Watching this video today made me think. I am a frequent cyclist, and would like to do a little more to protect myself - I like this bike cam idea for evidence gathering purposes should I ever need it - what else can I do to record unsafe drivers, and how can I report them? [more inside]
I am planning a biking/hiking and cycling trip in the Fall and I am looking for some suggestions for things to wear (I have all of the other essentials - food, tent, supplies, etc). [more inside]
What should I consider when deciding on buying either an electric scooter or a basic bicycle with a kid seat to be used for short trips of up to 6km with an active preschooler, replacing either walking or walking and public transit? Very interested in hearing from parents who bike with their kid every day or people who use electric scooters every day. I have no car and no intention of getting a car and live in a city with great public transit. Specific questions after the break. [more inside]
I'm an experienced hiker and runner with a reasonably good level of fitness. A friend of mine has a big birthday coming up, so I have agreed to join her for a cycle trip in Myanmar/Burma at Christmas. How do I prepare when I don't have a bike, and don't live in an area where road cycling is easy? (Difficulty Level: I live in Hong Kong.) [more inside]
Our family is vacationing in Montana next week, and I have rented a road bike for a couple of days. I intend to ride west to east up a part of Going-To-The-Sun Road, and wonder if anyone else has experience. I am SUPER excited about it, but also nervous. [more inside]
I like my Apple Watch so far. But the #1 reason I got it was to take it with me on long bike rides so I could see speed/distance/time at a glance. To my chagrin, after a short time out the cycling app quits, so when I glance down I see the watch face. And because I'm riding I can't swipe around to get back to the app. Surely there's a way to fix this? Or is the OS design that foolish?
I'm looking for a water bottle that will fit in the bottle cage of my bike. It must be dishwasher safe, BPA free plastic, and allow a high volume of water to be gulped without squeezing the bottle or sucking on a straw. [more inside]
I've come to the realization that I'm stupid for not having renter's insurance. Mainly because I now have a collection of six bicycles that are very dear to me; a couple of them are even custom. I'm looking for renter's insurance that will protect me from theft (in home and out) and if possible, even damage from crashing. Ideally this would also cover the bikes at full value, not some bs depreciation. I'm in San Francisco, CA.
Hi, my wife is looking to buy a new bike and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a particular store in Minneapolis or its environs. Neither of us knows all that much about bikes and the last time she bought one it wasn't a great experience (the clerk sold her a bike that really wasn't a good fit for her needs and the people at that shop are snotty.)
I'm going to NYC June 23 to July 7 and need a bicycle for that period. Last time I rented one on Spinlister, which worked great, but still cost $250-ish. I wonder if it's worth buying a 2nd hand ride and reselling it on the last day. If so, where? [more inside]
I've played rugby for almost ten years and after all this time, I want to mix it up a little and do a triathlon. My issue: overweight and not just a little intimidated. [more inside]
Is there a route alongside the San Francisco marathon I could take that would allow me to get back to the designated viewing locations? Bikes are not allowed in the race of course, but I'd like to know if anyone else has tried to follow the race and support a participant by riding ahead and cheering them on at each viewing location. What do I need to know to do a bike tour from the top of California to the bottom? [more inside]
After 8 months of cycling 14 miles a day to work and back (I have always been a recreational cyclist) my thighs have stripped off fat I didn't even know was there and built muscle well. But how can I get my calves to do the same? I use SPD's so there is some static engagement, but short of consciously pressing and releasing the pedal will every stroke, how do I engage my calves?
I want to ride from NYC to SF in 2015. I have 8 to 10 weeks (maybe 12) to do it. When would be the best time of the year to do so? [more inside]
A couple of days ago, riding my bicycle home from work, a random guy in a van who was passing me whacked me on the bum with his hand from the window of his car. I nearly fell off into traffic, and it was upsetting and rage-inducing, and I still feel really worked up about it. I'm finding myself dreading my bicycle commute now, and spending way too much mental energy on this. Has anyone got any suggestions for ways to deal with those emotions and stop letting this eat me up? [more inside]

I am a male academic. I try to dress modestly well (typical outfit: sport coat, button down shirt, tie, trousers), though I am a novice at doing so. What should I wear over top of my sport coat in winter that will keep me warm, look nice, and still allow me the range of motion required to ride my bike? [more inside]
I'd like to start biking to my yoga studio. I need to bring my own mat. Talk to me about what works. Difficulty: trail-a-bike hitch precludes a cargo rack. Is there another way to carry it on my bike? I'm also open to mat bags that play nicely with riding a bike. [more inside]
I just put some new ergonomic grips on my mountain bike, and they're slightly thicker rubber than the older ones. The tiny bit of extra circumference now obstructs the pull of my trigger shifter. When I try to go into a higher gear there's not enough clearance for the trigger to engage the ratchet in the shifter and move the dérailleur. I can force it if I squeeze hard enough and push the lever back out, and the bike shifts gears fine, so the issue is not cable tension. My question: Is there a way to adjust the trigger pull to be slightly further away from the handlebars? [more inside]
A few weeks ago, my bike lock left me stranded after the stupid plastic key handle broke off, leaving the rest of the key trapped inside the lock (and leaving me trapped four miles from home, in the rain). Similarly, the weird plastic key handles add a lot of unnecessary heft to my keychain. Are there any decent bike locks that use "normal" keys? Bonus points if I can get multiple locks that use the same key.
