I am planning a biking/hiking and cycling trip in the Fall and I am looking for some suggestions for things to wear (I have all of the other essentials - food, tent, supplies, etc). [more inside]
What should I consider when deciding on buying either an electric scooter or a basic bicycle with a kid seat to be used for short trips of up to 6km with an active preschooler, replacing either walking or walking and public transit? Very interested in hearing from parents who bike with their kid every day or people who use electric scooters every day. I have no car and no intention of getting a car and live in a city with great public transit. Specific questions after the break. [more inside]
I'm an experienced hiker and runner with a reasonably good level of fitness. A friend of mine has a big birthday coming up, so I have agreed to join her for a cycle trip in Myanmar/Burma at Christmas. How do I prepare when I don't have a bike, and don't live in an area where road cycling is easy? (Difficulty Level: I live in Hong Kong.) [more inside]
Our family is vacationing in Montana next week, and I have rented a road bike for a couple of days. I intend to ride west to east up a part of Going-To-The-Sun Road, and wonder if anyone else has experience. I am SUPER excited about it, but also nervous. [more inside]
I like my Apple Watch so far. But the #1 reason I got it was to take it with me on long bike rides so I could see speed/distance/time at a glance. To my chagrin, after a short time out the cycling app quits, so when I glance down I see the watch face. And because I'm riding I can't swipe around to get back to the app. Surely there's a way to fix this? Or is the OS design that foolish?
I'm looking for a water bottle that will fit in the bottle cage of my bike. It must be dishwasher safe, BPA free plastic, and allow a high volume of water to be gulped without squeezing the bottle or sucking on a straw. [more inside]
I've come to the realization that I'm stupid for not having renter's insurance. Mainly because I now have a collection of six bicycles that are very dear to me; a couple of them are even custom. I'm looking for renter's insurance that will protect me from theft (in home and out) and if possible, even damage from crashing. Ideally this would also cover the bikes at full value, not some bs depreciation. I'm in San Francisco, CA.
Hi, my wife is looking to buy a new bike and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a particular store in Minneapolis or its environs. Neither of us knows all that much about bikes and the last time she bought one it wasn't a great experience (the clerk sold her a bike that really wasn't a good fit for her needs and the people at that shop are snotty.)
I'm going to NYC June 23 to July 7 and need a bicycle for that period. Last time I rented one on Spinlister, which worked great, but still cost $250-ish. I wonder if it's worth buying a 2nd hand ride and reselling it on the last day. If so, where? [more inside]
I've played rugby for almost ten years and after all this time, I want to mix it up a little and do a triathlon. My issue: overweight and not just a little intimidated. [more inside]
Is there a route alongside the San Francisco marathon I could take that would allow me to get back to the designated viewing locations? Bikes are not allowed in the race of course, but I'd like to know if anyone else has tried to follow the race and support a participant by riding ahead and cheering them on at each viewing location. [more inside]
What do I need to know to do a bike tour from the top of California to the bottom? [more inside]
After 8 months of cycling 14 miles a day to work and back (I have always been a recreational cyclist) my thighs have stripped off fat I didn't even know was there and built muscle well. But how can I get my calves to do the same? I use SPD's so there is some static engagement, but short of consciously pressing and releasing the pedal will every stroke, how do I engage my calves?
I want to ride from NYC to SF in 2015. I have 8 to 10 weeks (maybe 12) to do it. When would be the best time of the year to do so? [more inside]
A couple of days ago, riding my bicycle home from work, a random guy in a van who was passing me whacked me on the bum with his hand from the window of his car. I nearly fell off into traffic, and it was upsetting and rage-inducing, and I still feel really worked up about it. I'm finding myself dreading my bicycle commute now, and spending way too much mental energy on this. Has anyone got any suggestions for ways to deal with those emotions and stop letting this eat me up? [more inside]
Looking for a Vancouver BC-themed cycling jersey for sale from a local shop. [more inside]
I am a male academic. I try to dress modestly well (typical outfit: sport coat, button down shirt, tie, trousers), though I am a novice at doing so. What should I wear over top of my sport coat in winter that will keep me warm, look nice, and still allow me the range of motion required to ride my bike? [more inside]
I'd like to start biking to my yoga studio. I need to bring my own mat. Talk to me about what works. Difficulty: trail-a-bike hitch precludes a cargo rack. Is there another way to carry it on my bike? I'm also open to mat bags that play nicely with riding a bike. [more inside]
I just put some new ergonomic grips on my mountain bike, and they're slightly thicker rubber than the older ones. The tiny bit of extra circumference now obstructs the pull of my trigger shifter. When I try to go into a higher gear there's not enough clearance for the trigger to engage the ratchet in the shifter and move the dérailleur. I can force it if I squeeze hard enough and push the lever back out, and the bike shifts gears fine, so the issue is not cable tension. My question: Is there a way to adjust the trigger pull to be slightly further away from the handlebars? [more inside]
A few weeks ago, my bike lock left me stranded after the stupid plastic key handle broke off, leaving the rest of the key trapped inside the lock (and leaving me trapped four miles from home, in the rain). Similarly, the weird plastic key handles add a lot of unnecessary heft to my keychain. Are there any decent bike locks that use "normal" keys? Bonus points if I can get multiple locks that use the same key.
I need suggestions for what I should eat/drink prior to a very short but intense cycling workout. [more inside]
I am a 5'8" woman who rides a 56cm (large) Specialized Tricross. I do not race on this bike — I have it set up for commuting and use it to ride Houston's pot-holed streets. Or, I *would* use it to ride Houston's pot-holed streets, except riding it for any longer than a couple of miles is pretty uncomfortable. [more inside]
I'm looking for advice on combining cycle commuting with gym-based workouts. [more inside]
I have a place in a huge century cycle ride (100 fairly hilly miles) in just over 5 weeks time. It's my first time doing something like this and I want to enjoy the day. Help me to train smartly over the next few weeks and to prepare for what to expect on the day. [more inside]
Cyclists of MeFi: I recently acquired a lovely new ride but wow, is it ever different from my daily commuter. Help me get used to drop bars and downtube shifters. [more inside]
Three years ago, I inherited a solid Biachi road bike from my dad. I'm pretty into it now. I usually bike 50 - 100 miles on the weekends, but as that number has crept up, I've run into some some fit issues. Maybe you can help me out with some conceptual stuff. [more inside]
I'll be in Manhattan from this weekend for a conference and some holiday time. I'm trying to keep up cycle training for a big event in two months. Are there routes around Manhattan where I can do some nice mileage while seeing some sights and feeling secure? Details within. [more inside]
I have a bike that is way too big for me and as a result, I don't ride it much. I'd like to change that and am looking at WSD bikes. [more inside]
I'm doing a bike ride that is to raise money for breast cancer research. Truthfully, I'm more interested in the ride, but there will be many on the ride more focused on the cause. I wanted to wear my new Sufferfest jersey, but worried that, given the folks who may be/know breast cancer survivors, it might be viewed as offensive or insensitive. Is it OK to wear the jersey, or should I pick a different one to avoid hurting someone's feelings? [more inside]
I'm having brunch in Santa Barbara this weekend, and then driving back to Los Angeles where I live. After brunch I'd like to drive for a while into the wilderness, park my car, and then ride my rigid frame mountain bike on some scenic single track (or fire roads, sure) for a few hours before heading home. Where should I go? [more inside]
I was considering buying an Electra Townie Go, the electric version of the Townie, but I've gotten some feedback that it's ridiculously overpriced for an electric bike ($2200+ where most electrics are less than $1500) and that the battery is very weak. Are there other pedal-forward electric bikes? [more inside]
I'm interested in getting a bike for rides around the neighborhood and occasional commuting (~4-5 mi). I'm pretty much a beginner rider, interested in comfort and safety more than high performance. I rode and enjoyed the Kona Dew Plus and Marin Muirwoods, and I'm also interested in the Fairdale Weekender and Origin8 Intersekt 7. I'd appreciate opinions on these bikes, comparable alternatives, or general wisdom. Snowflake details inside. [more inside]
I am a beginning runner looking for ways to add cycling to my workout routine. [more inside]
I recently bought a new hybrid bike which I will be using regularly for leisure rides. What do I need to know about basic maintenance (cleaning, lube, degreasing etc) to keep it in best shape. [more inside]
I have an old iPhone 4 (running iOS 7) that has no sim card. GPS and wifi and all that still work fine and it's got plenty of space. I want to find an app that will allow me to download a big swath of map around my house for offline use, then stick the phone in a bracket on my handlebars and use it as a bike computer to tell me speed, mileage, route, etc. Ideally it would show me where I am on the map as I go, too. I'd gladly pay for the app if it is not free. Is this possible?
I bought a good condition vintage Casati frameset for $380 4 years ago and have been riding it regularly since, without any issues. I recently slipped into a gap between two grates at the bottom of the ramp leading into my work garage and didn't hurt myself but the bike's back wheel was rubbing against the frame. I took it to a shop and they said the frame was bent (I think they said dropouts were bent). I relayed the information to my workplace and they are filing an insurance claim. My questions are as follows: could that damage have occurred somehow before without me noticing? How do I appraise the worth of my bike? I can't recall the model name and can't find a serial number, i just only see the brand and the columbus decal. And finally, is there anything else I should do in preparation for this claim? My friend was riding his bike through Brooklyn early Sat morning. Streets were quiet and he was not stopping at all the red lights, just slowing & crossing the (mostly) vacant intersections. Unbeknownst to him there was a cop in a patrol car following him about 1/2 a block back. After multiple blocks the cop finally pulled him over and issued separate tickets for every red light, totally about $800 worth. Although there is no dispute that he went through the lights, this was a very dick-ish move. How to protest in court? [more inside]
Our family (three full sized bikes and one 20" kid bike) takes frequent road trips to discover new bike trails. We are good riders but not very clever at bike handling (i.e. taking wheels on and off, adjusting brakes, etc.) Our trips are anywhere from 25 to 500 miles away. We have a 2010 Honda Odyssey. I have a roof rack now but it is not practical for me to lift the bikes up and down every single time; it's way up there and the bikes get unwieldy. And it freaks me out to drive with the bikes on top while we are zooming down the highway. I am thinking of getting a trailer hitch installed and getting a four bike rack for that. But practical advice is difficult to find. [more inside]
We'd like to spend a week each in Orkney and Shetland this (late August/early September). We love bikes, photography, historical monuments/museums. What are we not thinking of/what would you recommend? [more inside]
Los Angeles, I am accident-prone. I average one major bicycle crash a year. Help me find a hardcore indoor cycling activity that will still kick my ass and keep me safely off the streets for training rides. [more inside]
I have decided I want a bike for my 14-mile round trip commute between North and West London. I don't currently cycle at all. What kind of bike do I need? [more inside]
GPX Visualization on Google Maps: I have 300+ GPX files of bike rides that I'd like to be able to link to somehow over a Google Maps base layer, visually approximating this. This is related to my previous AskMe about cycling every road in a town; I need to visualize what roads I have/haven't ridden, and link that progress to a blog. Would like it to be as low-weight as possible; the 300 (uncompressed) GPX files amount to 100+mb currently (route+track+waypoints) and is only getting larger -- vanilla GMaps doesn't play nice with that many files. Much more information inside... [more inside]
Looking for a cheap gift idea/suggestion ($15) for someone who is into cycling (mountain biker). [more inside]
I've always harbored an ambition to ride across the U.S., but I thought I might have to quit my job to do so. My company just implemented eight-week sabbaticals though, so maybe I won't have to! I'm considering doing it next year, and I'd like some advice from people who've done a similar trip. [more inside]
Family of four, going to bike the Howard “Bizz” Johnson rails-to-trails trail next weekend, near Susanville, CA. Help us make this an awesome ride for us/our kids. [more inside]
Is there a bike shop in Seattle that sells cycling socks that would make a good souvenir? [more inside]
I'd like to find some magazines to subscribe to that deal with road cycling, fixed gear (including track) cycling, and filmmaking! I'm particularly interested in magazines that feature strong design (so don't just think FilmMaker Magazine, more like Little White Lies). This will not just be for my enjoyment, but they will live in my edit suite for advertising creatives to flip through during long edit days.
As I'm spending more and more time on bike trips where there are many long stretches without access to reliable tap water, I'm starting to investigate water filters and purifiers as a supplement/backup solution in case the extra water I carry runs out or spills or whatever. But there are so many kinds, and some of them seem really sketchy, and I'm getting overwhelmed! Can you point me to a good, comprehensive resource on how to choose and use water purifiers and filters? Or can you talk me through a typical real-world use? Take for granted that I'll be using them within the US and am unlikely to be traveling in areas where the natural water supply is seriously contaminated.
