I do not have sleep apnea. Have done two tests that concluded "Well, this just must be your cycle." I've already read many times the basics covered here: Have Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Can't remember many good, long nights of sleep but have been very functional on average of 4-5 hours/night. Now I'm 56 and have begun to spend more hours in bed when I can to make up the sleep-hours my body/mind needs. I have about 2.5 drink per night, usually starting 5ish, ending maybe 7. Come 10:30-11pm I fall asleep generally within 10 min to whatever kind of music, not that i really need it. Typically wake a couple hours later, booze or not, maybe take a sip of water, change positions, go back to sleep, usually putting on some quietish music to drift off to...I call it the lullaby effect. Might sleep another two hours, then wake again, maybe I pee. But on some occasions it's harder to fall back to sleep. In fact many nights, all my life perhaps, I wake every few hours at least to turn over. [more inside]
I'm 29, stuck job-wise, and have always lived paycheck to paycheck and below poverty line. I'm looking for examples of people who have succeeded in their careers or dreams without social capital to make this dreary Friday better. Not looking for a lecture on what I need to do, just some examples. Thanks. [more inside]
My bike odometer works fine for my morning ride to the office but never works on the way home. Huh? [more inside]
I enjoy spin class but want to be able to bike on my own at the gym. Are there any cycling apps (iOS) out there that provide audio cues? With or without music, with or without tracking. Maybe it's a podcast or YouTube series instead?
After a year of normal functioning, my washing machine's spin cycle is not extracting properly -- but ONLY with flannel sheets. They go through the spin cycle, but the water doesn't extract. The wash drum has no puddle. Just the flannel sheets are soaking wet. Other types of fabrics come out normal, with excess water extracted. Towels, jeans, percale sheets come out normal. Small flannel pillowcases come out normal. [more inside]
I am looking for an Android app (free or paid) for tracking my menstrual periods. I would like an app that will accept (and show on the calendar) periods lasting over a week, with variable period and cycle lengths. [more inside]
I'm commuting to Palo Alto and am leaving my bike at the Caltrain station. After someone tried to steal my bike last week I'm thinking about renting a bike locker. Does anyone have any experience with these lockers? I can't find any reviews of them one way or another online. I'm a little worried that if I mail them a check for $58 I'll just never hear from them again. [more inside]
Many bicycle repair kits contain a short piece of ivory colored soft rubber tubing hose for use on a bicycle valve. How is this used? I've never seen it in or around a valve. [more inside]
A friend and I are cycling the California coast, going south from Crescent City to LA starting today. Based on the amount of time we have, we will need to bus a few sections, maybe 200-250 miles or so. Cyclists who have done this route - which sections are missable? Which ones should we NOT miss? What bus/train options do you recommend? [more inside]
I live in a city with lots of traffic and air pollution, and I cycle to work in heavy traffic. I started wearing a Totobobo face mask while cycling to reduce the amount of gross stuff I'm forced to breathe during my commute. Thing is, those damn little filters look the same as a cotton pad, but they are 10-20x more expensive. Has anyone tried making/DIYing their own Totobobo filters? [more inside]
As a couple, we've both been night owls, but the combination of a bad winter, working from home, and a shared sabbatical has trashed our sleep cycle - Bed at four, up by noon. it feels like we're missing whole days and end up wide awake at 2am. How do you reset your clock to a more lark-like pattern when there's no external force driving you? We don't technically *have* to be awake at any particular hour, but the waking up at noon all the time is getting me down. [more inside]
I cycle with a (timbuk2) messenger bag and I get super nasty sweat lines on my shirt, right inbetween my boobs, where my cross-strap is. I don't even cycle far (rarely more than 5 miles at a time). Is there any solution other than using a rear rack? [more inside]
I've recently become more interested in the workings and fluctuations of my body, as well as in losing weight. I have been weighing myself daily for the past month, and also recording details of my menstrual cycle for the past couple of months. I have noticed the interplay between these two things as well (I gained 2 pounds during my period and also mid-cycle [possibly ovulation?], and then lost it quickly). I am hoping to find a website (or websites) that will help me track these things and spit back for me interesting and useful data about my body and its trends. I'm especially interested in getting a weight loss trend line, and also seeing a prediction of when my period and ovulation will happen for me each month. I realize that one website may not do both things and I am happy dealing with each phenomenon separately. Any suggestions either for the most useful weight-tracker websites or cycle-tracker websites (or both together!)? Note that I do not have a smartphone so this needs to be online, not an app.
I'm visiting family in Tucson the 24th - 30th and I'm flying my road bike in from San Francisco. I'm intending to get a lot of riding done while I'm there since I've signed up to participate in the Rapha Festive 500. I'm looking forward to doing some great riding including Mt. Lemon (I'll be staying up in the Oro Valley area). While I'm there I'd love to also tap into any cool cycle-culture type stuff the city of Tucson may have to offer. Are there any great cycle coffee shops? Brew pubs? LBS's with some actual community to them? Any group rides or cycle clubs that really embody the Tucson community. While I'll only have my roadie with me I'm also into fixed gear riding in SF. I don't know if that's a thing in Tucson, but would love to know of stuff in regards to that too. I know there is a strong senior cycle community out there, but for what it's worth I'm a 31 year old male. Thanks!

I'm getting a bit of pain in my left knee when cycling recently, so I stuck my bike on the trainer and shot a couple of videos (side, front). I'm planning a trip to both the doctors and a professional bike fitting, but in the mean time (seeing as I still need to bike to work everyday), I was wondering if any of our cycling MeFites could take a look and see if there's anything obvious to fix? On a first look at the videos, it looks like I'm really stretching at the bottom of my pedal stroke (even though it totally doesn't feel like it on the bike) - should I lower my saddle and try to keep a more level foot? In case it's relevant, I'm interested in comfort and not at all interested in speed, so feel free to recommend stuff that will make me slower if you think it'll result in a more comfortable ride!
YANMD, but I just started taking 25ug Estradot patches for my PMDD. Good news: suicidal thoughts gone. But there are other things going on, too, and I don't know whether they're side effects. Have you had these symptoms before? Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
A couple of years back, spouse came across a bike frame and assorted bits at a tag sale and brought home the whole megillah. This is a bike frame, seat, gears, and probably some other things I know nothing about. It's sat in the attic, as we had grand thoughts of getting the other bits and having a very fancy bike, but, no. So now, we're clearing out various stuff in the attic. I would like to sell these bike parts, but again with the ignorance of bike culture. I'll put the whole shebang up on eBay for a rock bottom price and no reserve, but I don't know how to describe the bits or the condition of the bits. Can you tell me what I'm looking at, and what to check for? I'd be happy to give a real cyclist a fantastic deal, but I need some help. [more inside]

I'm going on an overnight bike ride tonight, and I think I'm fine with all my supplies except for routing. I've got a handlebar mount for my phone, but I need a mapping app which I can use overnight which won't affect my night vision, and will save energy. Is there an Android app which I can import a .GPX file into and which can follow my progress and make sure I don't miss any turns on a minimal grey on black street map? I'm in the UK and all the route will be on Open Street Map.

What benefit does a Negative Operating Cycle get you? Other than just cash on hand. Amazon has a lot of cash because they practice Just In Time inventory management & sell out of their products before the bill for that product comes due. Other companies pay the bill first & then wait for the stock to sell out to recoup their money. Aside from the benefit of having cash on hand, what benefit do you get from this? [more inside]

I'm taking up commuting by cycle, heading home after midnight. Winter is coming in, and I need some way to stop my face from freezing in the cold night air.
