A recent episode of Gastropod convinced me that I should get some gold-plated cutlery as a present for a friend (it supposedly makes certain foods taste nicer). I haven't had any luck finding cutlery in the UK from the usual trustworthy department stores, so now I'm willing to widen the search to other UK stores and also online stores in the US.
Cooking is probably my main hobby these days. And, as a late-thirties professional, I have a fully outfitted kitchen. I'm being asked for gift ideas for Christmas, and I think I'll probably limit myself to 1) whisky and 2) stuff for the kitchen. Fellow advanced home cooks with fully stocked kitchens, what's on your wishlist this holiday season? Not looking for gimmicky stuff; rather something I'd actually use for years to come. [more inside]
There has got to be a better way to deal with winter squashes than the hacking/swearing/brute-force method I'm using right now. What is it? [more inside]
As seen in this picture. They're English silver plate, retailed my Abercrombie & Fitch probably sometime between the 30s and 60s. But what are they for? Some kind of cocktail thing? Each is about 4 1/2" in length - on the small side.
Trying to find a permanent, food-safe way to mark all my cutlery and cooking utensils (that won't wear off after repeated washes). [more inside]
Coworker I think I may like, and who may or may not kinda like me, did something today that I'm trying to figure out whether it was flirty or innocuous. Level-5 beanplating below the fold. [more inside]
Let's say you're starting from scratch and outfitting a minimalist kitchen. What do you buy? [more inside]
Help identify what is presumably an unusual piece of cutlery. Photos inside. [more inside]
I'm looking to spend a good amount of money on a chef's knife in the near future, and haven't found a good discussion of the difference between an 8" and 10" knife. What are the salient differences? [more inside]
Kitchen knives. One more time. How do knives distinguish themselves as they increase in price? Specifically, how does the recent offering from Calphalon compare? [more inside]
I'm lusting after new cutlery and am considering forgoing the knife block for a magnetic knife storage device like the Magnabar. Will the bar scratch the side of the knives? I know it is totally cosmetic but after dropping a few hundred dollars on knives, I want the cutlery to look great on the wall.
