Plastic surgeon vs Maxillofacial surgeon for stitches on the face

if you get a cut on your face that requires stitches and you go to the ER is it better to ask for a plastic surgeon or a maxillofacial to stitch you up? And is the hospital required to give you one if you ask for it?

What do you put on vulvar abrasions to help them heal?

Embarrassing Injury Filter: I managed to scrape my vulva on a rough surface today. Now I have these little paper cut type abrasions on the very softest parts but I can't really see them and I don't know what to put on them so they heal up properly. Can I put Neosporin on them? I'm worried that if I'm not careful any ointment I use will spawn a YI or something. :( My gyno won't be open till after the New Year otherwise I'd call and ask her.

If you use a coupon at a chain hair salon does the stylist get paid any less? I usually go to a local/independent place but my usual person has erratic & limited hours, so sometimes I use chain. There's always a manager or someone else around there otherwise I'd just ask personally. I tip the same regardless of whether I have a coupon.

Would especially like answers from someone in the business.

Emergency medical question: potential nerve damage?

After a deep cut to the hand, what are the proper precautions to prevent nerve damage? My friend cut his hand pretty bad, across all four fingers, maybe to the bone. The immediate short-term issues (e.g. bleeding) have basically been addressed, but at this point he is worried about potential long-term effects. One finger feels numb, like when your leg goes to sleep, and although he can move all four fingers, there are some places where he says he has no feeling if you touch it.

Being in a smallish city in China with generally low quality medical care, he is going to try to get to a bigger city with a more modern hospital, but there are some additional complications and it may be a day before he arrives. The question is how serious is this likely to be (he is worried about potential nerve damage, and the future use of his hand, or even potentially losing a finger or something), as well as what specific things he can/should be doing right now to ensure the best possible outcomes, until he can make it to the hospital. Throat pain

I have a pain in my upper chest, presumably in my esophagus. How urgent a medical condition is this, and which doctor should I see? The pain has existed for about 36 hours. It feels very similar (and on a similar level of pain) to when you eat a big lump of food and it gets stuck in your throat, except the pain isn't going away.

While sitting here right now, the pain is small but slightly annoying; it's worse when swallowing food. (I've been eating normally, but I think from now on I might switch to smoothies and milkshakes etc, because swallowing hard food is a serious annoyance.)

The location of the pain is below where one swallows at the back of the throat. Instead, I would say that if one draws a line from the Adam's apple to a point between the two nipples, it's about in the middle of that line. I *assume* this is in the esophagus, between the stomach and the throat, but I don't really know -- the pain isn't all that individually sharp but rather amorphous.

A key point -- about 36 hours ago (but possibly this event happened hours after the pain started! I'm unsure about assuming too much from this, because the following is an explanation that makes logical sense but could be entirely misleading!) I drank a glass of wine that came from a broken bottle. It's possible there was a small shard of glass, too small to see, and I drank it and it cut my throat. I haven't tasted any blood, haven't felt any weakness from internal bleeding, anything like that. No bloody or black stool.

My question: what doctor do I need to see? Possible internal bleeding from glass - is this an emergency? Can I wait until I can get an appt to see a general internist? (Does a general internist have methods see all the way down my throat to figure this out?)

Will this probably heal on its own? If it is a cut from glass, what could be done? Could it be anything other than a cut from glass?

How do I move the moving pictures from the camera to the computer?

I am in the application process for a really awesome job, and I just found out I have my second phone interview on Monday afternoon. Yay! It's a producing job at a start up web content company, and based on the first call, they're going to want to hire someone who can move data from cameras (sounds like I would be mostly working with DSLRs) into Final Cut Pro and prepare it for editing. I currently work in TV, where this job belongs to the assistant editors, and I don't even know how to begin to figure out this process. Please give me some weekend reading material to help me figure out if this is something I could quickly learn how to do. Thank you! Sorry if this question sounds dumb, I have spent my entire career telling the camera operators what to shoot and then arriving at my office the next day to magically find that footage loaded onto my desktop editing system.

I really appreciate any advice/resources you may have!

Need stitches without the ER

My girlfriend just got a cut on her leg from a glass table, about 1/4" deep, maybe a little deeper. We think she needs stitches or at least antibiotics, but she doesn't have health insurance. What is the cheapest option to get looked at and treated? We were moving a glass coffee table top and it broke and cut her. The bleeding has mostly stopped. It's about 6 am here in Columbia, SC and the urgent care places don't open until 8 am. We do not want to go to the ER since she doesn't have insurance and it will be so expensive.

Is it cheaper to go to urgent care? Should we call a normal clinic, will a "normal" doctor treat this wound for her? We've looked for low-cost clinics nearby and they seem to only offer preventative care, from what we've found. Can I call anyone before 8 am to see what we can do?

Should I take a 40% pay cut to change jobs? The new job is in a different industry where I'll be starting from scratch. It will probably mean longer hours and the pay is terrible compared to what I'm getting now, but I really want to leave my current job. To be honest, I've been meaning to leave for almost exactly a year now. I know I'm incredibly indecisive and can't put thoughts into actions. But I finally managed to apply for a job and go to an interview last week. It went really well - it ended with the interviewer telling me I'm welcome to come in for the second interview should I want to.

He said this because he knows I'll be taking a 40% pay cut. He was very direct in the salary they were offering and made it clear there was no room for negotiation.

So now I'm torn between a well paid job that I hate, and a poorly paid job that I could like. There is considerable risk in going for the new job, regardless of the money. It will probably involve longer hours (around 12 hour days; I know someone who works there) which is part of the reason I want to leave my current job. I want to get my life back and have hobbies again.

If I did take the job, I could probably change companies and get close to what I'm earning now after a year.

The money would be less of a factor if I were single. My girlfriend is also quite well paid and she's fond of our current lifestyle and disposable income. Cutting out our expensive weekend dinners (or making her pay for them!) would feel terrible for me. I know she would say she doesn't care about those kinds of things, but I know it makes her happy.

The third option is to keep looking. I'd be happy to take up to a 30% pay cut if the job was right. Ideally I would have regular hours and receive sufficient training, as opposed to the "sink or swim" attitude. I just don't know if this job exists.

Basic dog first-aid (not an emergency) filter: what is the best approach to cleaning up/treating a minor cut from a rock? I have a nutty and energetic 1-year old puppy. She's some sort of working breed mix, I assume, probably a shepherd. She likes it when fetch is made a bit more extremem with the addition of water, rock faces to run up and down, etc.

Today she got a really small cut. Really not a big deal, and there's no way I'll be calling her vet. It's on her front leg, near the paw, and is about the size of a pea. By the time I noticed it (my dog has no idea it's there at the moment) it had stopped bleeding. She hasn't shown any interest in biting or chewing it so far.

My question is this: should I do the same basic stuff that I would do if I, myself, had a very small cut? All the advice I can find on the internet seems to end with either "panic" or "buy my series of videocassettes," and something tells me there's a simpler solution.

TL;DR: What's the best way to deal with a very minor cut on a dog's leg?

German Hair Work

What is this German hairstyle? As seen recently in Berlin on a hip young man and not-hip young child, it seemed shorter on the top than on the sides but not a mullet (my memory is a little hazy), like it must have been a traditional quick n' easy home haircut possibly done with clippers but not something I've ever seen in the states. Bonus: how do you achieve this hairstyle?

Help ID an old print or two. Found an old art book at a thrift store that had a bunch of old prints/lithos in them. Several of them I have identified but there is one I am having a hard time with. It's a woodcut and is signed but I cant make out the artist. Figured I would turn to metafilter for help.

The book itself is signed David H. Frantz or Frank 1920. The woodcut is of a woman working at a printing press I believe. It is signed 'Printed especially for David Frantz' then her name. It looks like Maureen or Marion or Miriam but its hard to tell. Last name is illegible to me. Maybe a John??

Google is failing on that second one. Not much info. I have a feeling he was probably just a street artist in Paris in the 40's from what I gather but any insight would be cool.

Capturing and Compiling HD Video Clips?

I'm looking for the cheapest and/or easiest way to capture and compile segments of certain television news and comedy shows in full HD from a standard set-top box, then export them as a single HD presentation (either as a file or maybe as a Blu-ray disk). Luckily, I'm not starting completely from scratch. I already have MacBook Pro (2010) Final Cut Studio (the 2006 release I think but certainly not the most current version) and Adobe Creative Suite CS5 Master Collection. What more do I need (some type of capture device I assume) and what's the best workflow given the heavy duty software package? This project is NOT intended for any kind of sale or public distribution but instead is part of a school project.

Does an extended cut of the Lion King Franchise exist?

Does a fan cut of the various Lion King movies combined in chronological order via story exist? I was just telling someone that a fan of the Lion King franchise sequenced all the movies together to create this one big epic. I remember it being somewhat popular around this year or last year. I can't seem to find it on YouTube (maybe because of copyright) and Google is failing me right now. I even thought it was on the blue. If anyone can give me the name that would help out a lot.

What are the common tools of the trade - software, mainly - for Vimeo-wave videographers? So, on Flickr it's a little easier to figure out the common ingredients of things that you see, but I'm getting into video now that I have a decent camera for the job. iMovie drives me nuts (weird project / timeline / library system, virtually no artistic options like color grading and such).

Is Final Cut Pro X really that bad? It's got 3/5 stars on the Mac App Store and lots and lots of articles about how existing users are alienated, but a lot of that is pro stuff - being a DSLR-using, quick-video-making type user, maybe it's well designed for me?

And, though the open-source world of video seems nigh-nonexistent, I'd like to integrate some of the generative video projects I've been working on into whatever I'm doing - basically stuff I'd write in Plask or Processing or PureData or whatnot. Are any big video editors better or worse for that kind of task?

More specifically, so the question is clear, I would like to show (in my video) a fake website that has an embedded video. So, "the website" will be a still image, but there is video within it. [Sharopoint filter] When I work from home using a Secure ID RSA token to VPN into my corp network I cannot copy and paste anything from Sharepoint. Or should I say copy anything as copy comes before paste. While trying to get it to work one day I tapped the mouse about a dozen times and twice the word did highlight - but that is not a good way to work! And could not repeat it. Am I missing something?
My job requires a lot of cut and paste and if I cannot effectively do that my work from home 2 days a week could be over.

What is a great place to get a (lady) haircut in Pittsburgh? It's been way, way too long and I would like to get a haircut sometime soon. My hair is a bit past shoulder length, a bit dry, and wavy - I would ultimately prefer a cut that requires no maintenance and has layers.

I was also thinking about the Japanese thermal straightening but it looks horribly expensive. Any cheaper, reputable places around town?

I live near Lawrenceville and have a car, but don't want to drive more than 30 or so minutes out of the city.

Budget: I would love a great haircut for cheap, but I recognize this isn't always possible. Preferably under $60 or so, but I appreciate any recommendations.

I have a question that is similar to this one but with an additional twist. I've never known what hair type is best for me, and to make matters worse, I'm getting married in less than two weeks and I don't know which up-do style works best. Please help me find a great up-do AND a permanent hairstyle to boot. I guess I should start off by saying I don't think I'm a total uggo or anything. I realize I have imperfections, but I'm OK with the for the most part. I'd like to down-play the bad parts though!

I took a few pictures to illustrate the odd shape of my head. It's fairly flat on the back, and I have a whole lot of chin, jaw, and cheek bone. Currently, my hair is slightly longer than shoulder length with long bangs and longer layers. I've had a myriad of different hairstyles over the years, ranging from short pixie cut to bobs to long-long to shags with bangs. I don't know WHAT looks good on me. To make matter worse, I have strange eyebrows and less than perfect skin.

Here is what my current hair looks like and what my face shape is. Sorry for the bad lighting/blurriness/lack of makeup and overall imperfection.

Here are some of the hairstyles/colors I've had in the past.

Again, I'm looking for suggestions for a permanent haircut and/or color AND suggestions for an up-do for my wedding. I don't plan to make a change before my wedding, so you should think of up-dos that will work with my CURRENT hairstyle. As far as the permanent 'do is concerned, I'm open to anything/everything!

I'm looking for a specific photo of a cat that I found on Flickr a few years ago. It was an orange cat with a lion cut, sitting up. He may or may not have been sticking out his tongue. It was a scanned Polaroid, with a blue background. Does anyone remember seeing this? The photo looked sort of like this. I think I saw it before 2009. The photostream had newer photos of the cat. I've searched Flickr, but I can't find it since there are millions of cat photos all over the place. It was super popular back in the day. I think the description said something like "he just sits like this."

Thanksgiving ham

Help me make a glazed ham this weekend. I promised to make a glazed ham for Canadian Thanksgiving. However, I have never done this before, and I live in Germany. So, aside from a good recipe, I need your help to figure out: what am I actually looking for, meat-wise? Germans are definitely big on pork, so there is a lot of ham around, but the cuts and everything are different, and just asking for "schinken" isn't going to be specific enough. Also, I don't want to go the frozen ham route, so I will be going to a butcher. For example, should it be soaked in brine? On a bone? What kind of preparations do I need to do? A cursory AskMe and Google search suggests brine has something to do with cooked hams...? I was at a butcher today and saw what looked like small hams, on bones, and the guy at the counter said they had been soaked in brine. Is that it? And if so, is it possible to get something much bigger? This ham will accompany a turkey, but we will be a large group.

Much self-control needed to avoid scratching!

I scraped my wrist eight days ago. The gash itself is healing up alright, albeit a bit slower than I'd like, and it looks like it might scar a little. But the surrounding area is red, blotchy, and bumpy like a rash, and it itches terribly. Should I be concerned? I got the scrape on a trailer jack when my hand slipped while cranking it. Obviously, the metal might be a concern. I don't have any documentation of tetanus shots but I'm 95% confident I've had one in the last 7 years (which I've heard, but not confirmed, is the period the shot is good for).

After I got the cut it bled a little. It took me a couple hours before I was able to clean the wound. I applied hydrogen peroxide and an adhesive bandage. Since then I've been applying Neosporin to the cut daily, with a fresh adhesive bandage over it each time.

It's not the greatest picture, but this is what the wound looks like now. You can see the inflamed patches surrounding the cut. It's redder in real life than it appears in that photo. You are not my doctor, but should I go see him about this or will it take care of itself? Can you recommend anything to help the itching go down?

How do I learn to make short movies?

I'm an engineer wanting to explore my creative side a bit via making short films aimed at online viewing via YouTube or whatever. I've got the high-end Macintosh but I need (1) a camera (hopefully better than my old MiniDV camcorder), (2) software (Final Cut Express or similar, I suppose), and (3) skill in the mechanics of filming and editing and in the technique of story telling. In other words, I need to learn how to operate the camera and editing software but I also need to learn what I want to do with it. I'd appreciate suggestions for any of this stuff but pointers on good books or whatever for learning the skills would be really nice.

I made a long video, and I need to break it into ten-minute-long chunks, so that I can post it to YouTube. I would LOVE some app that let's me batch process this task. I want to start it running in the morning and come home at night to find a whole bunch of ten-minute-long videos on my desktop. I'm using an Intel Mac. I'm willing to buy an app if I have to.
