I live in Germany, and my German girlfriend's brother-in-law is originally from Nigeria. He is having trouble integrating. He's lived in the country (on and off) for 10 years, but continues to struggle with the language. To make matters worse, cultural differences are getting in the way of him establishing himself. What can I do to help him? [more inside]

What are some great traditions I can start with myself or with my family? Growing up, outside of your standard holidays, my family never had traditions like taking a yearly vacation, making cookies on Sundays, or going to all Notre Dame home games. Now that I am older, I want my own traditions. What traditions did you, your family, or friends have that I should be envious about?

A couple years ago, I read a really intriguing essay that compared the American cultural ideal of "effortless cool" to the theological debate over the importance of grace vs. good acts. I believe that the writer identified the Puritans as coming down on the side of grace, and made a connection between their influence on early America and our cultural preference for grace (i.e. "effortless cool") over good acts (i.e. "trying too hard"). I would really love to cite this essay, but unfortunately, my Google-Fu is failing me. I remember that I read it online, and it was probably linked from a comment on The Blue. Any idea what I read or who wrote it?
What are your favorite art magazines, and why do you find them interesting? I have been looking at Artforum and ARTnews, but they are pretty dry ... lots of pictures and some facts, but little gossip or other interesting commentary. I want something with great articles to sit down and read.

While on vacation in Belize, many of the locals commented that while they liked American adults just fine, their children were the most spoiled among the tourist families. We've heard this elsewhere on our travels to Europe and Southeast Asia. Is this true? If so, is there a unique style of American parenting that other cultures see as problematic or inferior? This question has certainly been asked before but I am looking for great rock music from different countries, the place matters not (except US and Canada). What I really want though is more musical exposure of bands who I can then listen to and research outward from them. In other words, I am not looking for exhaustive lists of bands, rather, geographic diversity. The more different countries, the better. [more inside]
I have the potential for a job in Austin, TX. I live in upstate NY. I have never been to Texas (other than a layover in Houston) and never lived outside of NY state. How different is the cost of living? Is the culture clash going to be overwhelming? Am I crazy to even consider this?
