I read a nonfiction piece awhile back that I can't find via my google-fu. It concerns a guy visiting Cuba who meets with locomotive types in memory of (or for) his father, who was a train buff. The piece was nostalgic and colorful, and focused on the concept of Cuban train engineering effectively being frozen in time. Can anyone help?

Can you help me with Cuban musicians and/or artists who are still suffering from being banned/censored in Cuba?
I've read that Celia Cruz and many others are no longer banned in Cuba. Are there still artists (either musicians or visual artists) that the country can't abide? [more inside]

The Google Translate app is awesome on my Droid 3 Android phone, especially the new conversation mode however it does not have an offline mode. I will be traveling where there is no convenient, fast, or affordable internet or cell service, specifically Cuba. Is there app or stand alone alternative that you know of? I especially like the speech to speech aspect of the conversation mode in google translate. English to Spanish and Spanish to English is what I am looking for.

I read here
that Cuba has frozen about $1 billion in foreign businesses' bank accounts and is now offering to dribble the money back to the account holders over five years at a piddling interest rate. But this is all "electronic" money, right (as opposed to physical cash)? What's to stop an account holder and a non-Cuban bank from ignoring the freeze, "transferring" the money electronically, and then simply acting as though the funds were actually transferred? Cuba and human rights.
Please ignore this if you think Cuba is a
1. Glorious Worker's Paradise or
2. 3rd largest prison on Earth (after Myammar and N. Korea)
I would like to know more about human rights for the average
person in Cuba.
For instance, if a regular person (NOT a government employee, journalist, or someone w/ connections) could afford it, could they just leave and go to India for 2 weeks on vacation?
Buy a computer and get full access to the Web?
Visit a relative in Miami?
Open a bookstore and import what they want?
Start a blog discussing human rights in Cuba?
What actually happens if they try sailing a boat to Miami or Mexico?

I've been digging on the cuban hip hop lately. I've seen the doc East of Havana. I listen to las Orishas, and I have the soundtrack/related album to East of Havana by El Cartel. I do like the artists featured there, but I enjoy las Orishas more because it feels a bit more infused with traditional Cuban music. Any recommendations of what else I can listen to? [more inside]

I really want to get away from my house to finish up some screenplays for a May 1 deadline. So where can a not-so-rich person go for the last two weeks of April that will allow much peace and quiet while being both safe and warm enough to wander around in short sleeves night and day. Suppose a cost of around $1500--the cheaper the better--including return airfare to Toronto. Note that I like seclusion but I also don't drive so it needs to be someplace close to the necessities.

I am an American citizen. If I want to travel to Vietnam, all I need is a valid passport and visa; if I want to travel to Cuba, I either have to sign up for a special tour, be part of some pre-approved humanitarian/scientific/educational group, or be willing to break U.S. law. I know that there are extralegal ways for U.S-ians to travel to Cuba; this is not my main question. [more inside]

Michael Moore's movie had me thinking about why Cubans defect to the the US to play baseball. The sportscasters always told stories about Cuban oppression, from what I can recall. I was wondering if there are different reasons though. I'm thinking money is the biggest reason. Have any journalists or writers covered this in depth?
