What are some good resources for learning CSS?

I have been out of the HTML game since CSS came on the scene, (yeah, that long.) and I need to develop it as a skill set. I could use some suggestions for reading material that'll get me there quickly. [more inside]

Is there anywhere decent to look for freelance web work?

I'm a frontend web developer with quite a long resume. I work full-time but I'd like to pick up some freelance, remote work in my spare time. I'm wondering if there are any places to look besides my personal network, Craigslist, and those awful "Rent-a-coder" sites where you get underbid by overseas folks who'll do it for $9/hr. How to create HTML/CSS ordered lists for Sections of a document?

I am looking for a method of displaying a list item's parent number in a list with nested sublists, in the way sections of a document would be displayed. Example:
...
8. Defining Custom Counter Styles: the ‘@counter-style’ rule
8.1. Counter algorithms: the ‘type’ descriptor
8.1.1. repeating
8.1.2. numeric
...
I'd like to use only the ol and li tags and CSS styling, but HTML lists will only display the number of the current node. Thoughts? [more inside]

Reading to complete before a technical interview (CSS, JS, HTML)?

I'm scheduled for a technical interview after the weekend for a front-end development position. I'd like to spend some intensive time beforehand reading relevant blogs and books to prime the ol' noodle and supplement my existing knowledge. Could you recommend some resources? Are there questions you would ask an applicant in this situation, or that you have been asked? [more inside]

Why does daringfireball show a "white flash" between pages?

I've noticed that when I click around the popular Daring Fireball site, there's a brief whitescreen flash in between pages... i.e., the entire browser window turns white for just a moment before the next page loads. Anyone know why? [more inside]

Where to start with modern web UI development?

Help me get my Web 2.x (or are we on 3.x now? I've lost track) on. I'm an old-school Web 1.0 developer who wants to kickstart himself into slightly more modern UI and user experience paradigms, and I have a project in mind (of course). The challenge? No expensive tools. [more inside]

Buying a good theme

I'm currently shopping for pay themes for a Wordpress blog. A lot of theme websites have previews for their themes, but are rather limited in their implementation. Are there good review/forum sites for themes that aren't SEO backwash, or is there an effective search method to find sites that use a particular theme? [more inside]

Wordpress Workflow

I'm designing a custom Wordpress theme as part of a project. In addition to the typical Wordpress install, there's also going to be a social media plug-in on top of it (which has already been picked out and installed by another member of the project). This is the most complicated bit of web development that I've done, so I'm curious: what sort of workflow should I set up to make things easy on myself? [more inside]

I need to be brought up to date in web development

I have been out of website coding the past seven years. I still have a webiste but it is coded in very simple HTML with little or no CSS. From what I remember back then CSS was not supported fully by all he browsers. Broadband internet was also not as widely used as it is today so I hesitated in using images for my site. Is there a book that will bring me up to date with the latest coding technologies (Ajax, HTML, CSS)?

IE/Mac Hell

Help, I'm stuck in IE/Mac hell! (It's the only browser we support for Mac at the moment, so it has to work there.) I have a dropdown list with various values: Page 1, Page 2, Page 3, etc. One of these values is set by the JSP as the current selected value: . Clicking on the value in the dropdown you want (Page 5, whatever) will bring you to that new page. The code is valid and works perfectly fine in IE/Win, Safari, Mozilla, etc. But on IE/Mac, when the new page loads, the value that's *visible* on screen in the dropdown box is not the currently-selected one, but rather whatever value was the first value in the dropdown list! So you could be on Page 1, go to Page 5, but Page 1 (the first option in the list of options) is what displays in the dropdown. To make matters funkier, when you then click to open that dropdown, it "jumps" to show you that yes, you're really on Page 5, that Page 5 is indeed the selected/highlighted value. So it's a display bug of some sort...?

I've seen plenty of bug reports and workarounds online for Mac/IE, but nearly all of them involve CSS, not core HTML pieces like options/selects. We do use CSS on the site, but it's minimal, and we generally use nested tables, inside which this naughty dropdown resides. Ideas to get around this--maybe javascript to force the correct value to display? Anyone else had this sort of issue? Help!

Where can I troubleshoot CSS online?

What are some good web development links or discussion lists with an emphasis on CSS development to help me troubleshoot some problems with a new site of mine? Mozilla and Safari aren't rendering my CSS correctly (it's fine in IE) even though I thought I was being careful in how I coded it. I'm a member of CSS-discuss and have posted my issue there, but the nice people who tried to take a look at the problem have been stumped. I've also read through the archives at scriptygoddess and a list apart. Help! [more inside]
