I have found it impossible to grasp the concept of CSS. A friend taught me to hand code HTML, then I taught myself how to use Dreamweaver. I love HTML and design nice looking sites that are full of tables, repeated font tags, etc. I really want and need to move on. I want to learn CSS, but it just does not sink into my pea-brain. I've tried various online tutorials but just can't stay interested, mainly because I get lost pretty quickly into the tutorial. Certainly it can't be that difficult, what can I do to make this easier for me to absorb?

Should I install Internet Explorer 7? I use IE6 (windows XP) now and am doing my best to learn XHTML and CSS -- I'm a newbe. I've check ASKme and there is quite a number of folks that are against updating. These folks appear to have substantial knowlege of programming and are far advanced to my knowledge of the subject . Should a person new to web design just upgrade to IE7 now and learn design to strict W3 standards rather than wait until the rest of the universe is at those standards and relearn them the right way? I know there is alot of grey area here -- for and against. Thank you....

Posting on behalf of a friend: CSS Absolute / relative positioning problem. In designing a course website which has to validate as XHTML (Strict or Transitional), I've come up against a problem with an image. I want the image to remain in the right hand div but resize gracefully. My problem is that the trowel image either interferes with the header (is too high) but IS able to move with the page or doesn't interfere with anything but won't resize with the page! [more inside]

Safari is being a b!tch about correctly rendering basic CSS elements. Specifically, the 'background' attribute simply is not being honoured in any way, shape or form. The kicker is that according to Apple's own specs, Safari does indeed support that attribute; in addition, Googling turns up nothing--a few lists of Safari CSS oddities, but those don't seem to contain anything about the problem I'm seeing.
