I have a ten-year-old Sony TV that's on the fritz. It's a good enough second set that I'd like to save it if possible, but it's also big enough that it's going to be a pain to haul in to the shop for an estimate. If I decide to pop the case and dive inside for a quick sanity check, what do I need to do to avoid electrocuting myself in the process? [more inside]

[DirtyPowerFilter] My CRT monitor has developed a nasty shake/vibration at certain refresh settings, since I moved to a new apartment. I think the problem stems from the old electrical system. Is there anything I can do to "clean" the power and alleviate the problem? Or are all "power conditioning" products bogus? Backstory and more info below the fold. [more inside]

I just brought home a big o' 21" viewsonic P815 monitor. It didn’t have the monitor cable, so I used a crappy one I had. I’m noticing a lot of odd “shadow” effects, especially with black text on a white background- the text is clear, but there’s a very light grey echo to the right of it, then a lighter echo to the right of that, and so on. It reminds me of cable "ghosting." My question: is it a cable problem or a monitor problem? [more inside]

When 3 CRTs are placed next to each other and are showing exactly the same image, why does it often seem that one is redder, one is greener, and one is bluer? This is something we've seen where I work on multiple hardware configurations and in random order, but always one of each in a three-channel configuration. [more inside]

My 3 year-old CRT monitor has begun to flood yellow-ish, seemingly randomly. After much troubleshooting, I've found that I can temporarily fix it by whacking the side of the monitor like Fonzie used to do to the jukebox. What the heck is going on with my monitor?

I'm in the market for a new CRT monitor. The old Viewsonic A90's cable is wearing, causing some pretty bad artifacts. I'd like to just replace the cable, but it's attached to the back of the monitor.

My CRT monitor puts out a high-pitched whine that changes tone depending on certain conditions of which I'm not familiar with (in other words, the tone fluctuates). It's not overly loud but it's definitely noticeable - it's quite irritating. It used to do this about a year ago then stopped only to start again last week. Anybody know why it's happening and how to stop it?

So I turned on this monitor (CRT) I have and the image started jumping around and contracting and expanding and dimming and brightening for a bit all crazily. It goes away after the monitor has warmed up and only returns when I turn it on after it's been off for a while. Is it dying or is it just a quirky mannerism and is there anything I can do to fix it?

The screen of my 17" CRT developed a strange, highly-reflective, streaky sheen after sitting under my stairs for six months. (Photo, close-up photo.) I've tried several cleaning agents, but nothing takes it off. The only thing that happened in the interim is that somebody spilled a cup of hot coffee in the vicinity, which splashed the screen, but we cleaned it off pretty quickly and didn't notice any damage at the time. Could coffee etch glass? Or could something else have caused this? Is there anything I can do to clean the screen?

I've recently moved to a dual-monitor set up, one CRT and one LCD, and I've discovered that I have a strange problem with Photoshop. If I open photos I've shot, on the LCD, they appear brighter and oversaturated -- when I open the same photo to the CRT, the colour is darker. If I open a photo on the LCD and then move it to the CRT, the photo will contain rectangles of colour that match either the appearance on the LCD or CRT. Is this some kind of colour profile issue that I don't understand? I've installed the LCD calibration software and that's about all I can think of doing to solve the problem. Help?!
