How to buy a car from a person

I am looking to buy a used car for cash from a local (CA) private party, not a dealer.
What do I need to know? I am mainly looking on Craigslist, but other suggestions are welcome. I'm looking for a Toyota Echo, if it matters.

So...what should I look out for in terms of scams? (I am already aware of things like shipping cars from far away, etc.) I will of course get it checked by a mechanic but what else should I be aware of?

How should I actually pay for it? Certified check? Giant wad of cash? Goats? I'm expecting it to be in the $5k range.

I am also going to be selling my old car, which is a 1997 Corolla in "fair" condition. Is it better to try to sell it myself, or should I go to Carmax? If I do sell it myself, how should I ask for payment?

Someone bought THAT?

Help me find some hidden treasures. With an eye to both decluttering and raising some much-needed cash, I've been looking around my home for things that might be resaleable on Craigslist, eBay, etc. It occurs to me that there are probably things that would be sellable that simply haven't occurred to me. What are some unusual, obscure, or downright off-the-wall things you've bought or sold or heard that someone else has?

Buy. Sell. Trade.

Interested in buying and then selling stuff. I am running into two (and I assume, very common) problems. 1. The high quality stuff I find tends to be too expensive to buy. 2. The cheap stuff I find is really crappy.

I know in order to make money, you need to buy low and sell high. But, this seems a LOT easier in theory than in practice!

What am I doing wrong? I am interested in selling video games, dvds, CDs/tapes/records, magazines, and books. I am also interested in selling vintage collectibles and jewelry.

I search thrift stores and pawn shops, and have little luck in finding quality items. When I do, it is too expensive. I don't know much about garage sales, is there a way I can find out who's having one? Are there any other places that I should check? Any other methods I should use? Any other items I should try selling?

I'd prefer to sell things through ebay, but craigslist is an option also. I heard of people selling things through resale shops, but I heard that it is really hard to make money that way.

First-time car seller looking for best way to sell a car in NYC

First-time car seller looking for best way to sell a car in NYC? I moved to Manhattan a few months ago, and I brought my car with me. I hardly ever use it now, and its costing me a lot of money and aggravation. I'm thinking that it might be time to get rid of it, however, I've never sold a car before.

What's the best method to get rid of my car and not get ripped off? Should I have the car inspected before listing it, or is that something the buyer would want to do themselves? I'd like to be safe, as I'm sure there are plenty of people on craigslist who might try to scam me out of my vehicle. The car is registered in NY, gets decent gas mileage, and I have the title to it.

How much would you pay for a monome?

How much would you pay for a monome? I'm looking to sell my first edition monome 40h (monome.org) but don't know how much I should charge. I know that there were only 500 of these machines made worldwide and I hardly ever see listings for them on craigslist or ebay. So given that I know that, how much should I sell it for if I were to post a listing on craigslist? I paid $500 for it originally and I've seen exactly ONE craigslist posting in my life and that guy was charging $800. Is $800 too pricey or could I perhaps sell it for more? I like this machine and don't want to part with it but I need to buy someone a new computer (I spilled bong water on my dealer's new laptop) and need to do it faaast. Any tips for selling something like this on ebay? Am I better of selling it as a buy it now or would I make a lot more money if you could bid on it? Thanks in advance.

Best places (beyond ebay & Craigslist) to sell old PowerBooks and other used tech gear?

Right now, what are some good places -- in addition to ebay & Craigslist -- to sell used tech gear (such as old PowerBooks and any other excellent-condition but old stuff)?

As a current example, I was given a Wallstreet G3 and a 1400cs that I want to turn into cash. (I'll test them well, but so far they seem to be in excellent operating/cosmetic condition with various upgrades beyond factory specs -- in other words, for me to buy identical models on ebay or a used-Mac site would be c. $300 for the Wallstreet and $130 for the 1400.)

Ebay could work (I have a 100% positive rating with 30+ sales, but it's only from selling cheap stuff like my books and CDs), and right now I'm spending my time in active Craigslist cities (mostly Detroit & NYC). Where else should I be looking to sell? Broader suggestions would also be much appreciated, since I often get or salvage other such things I could sell.

Selling Used Car Online

Has anyone had any luck with any of the commercial car selling sites? eBay motors? craigslist? I need to sell my pickup truck (it's a 1998 high-mileage full-size 4x4 regular-cab in very good shape, if that matters, and I'm in MajorMetropolitanArea USA) sometime soon. When I do sell it, I'll need both to sell it as quickly as I reasonably can and for as much as I reasonably can get. Trading it in isn't an option (I'm not getting a replacement). Would you recommend selling online, given my requirements?
