Should I buy a CPAP machine?

CPAP machine (or rather, an APAP) has been helping me feel better, I think, but I was never actually diagnosed with sleep apnea and the sleep study results didn't show any apneas. The CPAP trial has ended, and I need some help deciding if I should buy the machine. Many details after the jump! [more inside]

Rainout, rainout, go away!

CPAP users: How do you prevent rainout (condensation forming in your hose and landing on your face) in your CPAP, besides using a heated hose? My "hose cozy" is just not cutting it. Is there anything I can do before I see my doctor about a new prescription for a CPAP with a heated hose? [more inside]

Help me with this medical supply billing nightmare

My husband was diagnosed with sleep apnea after a sleep study in April. Ever since, we have been on a nightmare ride with a medical supply company called Carecentrix. Billing for the CPAP device and its accessories (mask, tubes, filters) is an obscure and mysterious process. Multiple bills a month, customer service reps that cannot tell us the ultimate cost of the machine -- how do I extricate us from this incredibly frustrating medical supply issue? What is the best course of action after seeing how poorly this company is rated by the BBB and customers? [more inside]

ResMed S9 CPAP PSU in Edinburgh, UK?

Where can I get a PSU unit for a ResMed CPAP in a hurry in Edinburgh? The sole UKsupplier is in London and now shut until the New Year, and there's no post anyway. Nobody seems to be answering the phones at my London clinic or the Edinburgh equivalents. PSU is custom and has non-srandard connectors: hacking an alternative seems a non-srarter. [more inside]

Should I be this mad at the airport, and if so, what do I do?

Anonymous because I'm not sure if legal action is a possibility. After many times of travelling with his CPAP machine with absolutely no problem, my SO was not allowed to board with it this time at our local airport. (There was a death in his family and he was flying on short notice.) They insisted it needed an FAA approval stamp or at the very least a letter from the manufacturer. We found the relevant letter on our smartphone but the airline employee (the one who was holding the machine hostage) insisted it had to be "on their letterhead." With only an hour before the flight took off, he had to go without it -for three nights. I called the TSA, and they were shocked. I called the relevant airline, and they put me on hold and then told me it was a local airport rule. I sent an email to the airport, and they claim it is an airline rule, and that I was misinformed, and that they were passing my email to the local rep of the airline. (after I responded.) I have not heard back so far. [more inside]

Advice re: my father's swift decrease in mobility - arthritis & Synvisc

My father (age 79) has gone from keeping a cane in the car for occasional use to steady himself (through 2012) to being in terrible pain and needing a walker around the house (the latter after a Synvisc injection to the knee 2 weeks ago, knee swelling, and falling - again - at home alone). So far he hasn't broken anything in his falls, but I live 90 minutes away from him and he lives alone. He's accustomed to being quite active and has often been mistaken for a man 10-15 years his junior. [more inside]

Can this CPAP stand be saved? Or is there a better way?

My partner uses a CPAP machine at night, with a stand to elevate the hose, to keep it from getting crushed or tangled. The stand he uses works well—it greatly improves his sleep—but each stand fails at one soldered joint after about a month of use, so he just buys another one each time. We're tired of paying $20 a month for what should be a one time (or at least rare) purchase. Can you help us find a way to reinforce the stand, or a sturdier stand that we'll only need to buy once?
