Next year I want to get my taxes prepared by a new accountant. Looking for recommendations in the Bay Area! [more inside]
I want to do the right thing: pay what I owe. Yet, I don't know who would be on my side! A tax preparer? An accountant, CPA, tax attorney, someone else? The years have caught up to me, true, but how will I live once I've acknowledged my debt? Can I pay my bills and the person/company helping me before the IRS freezes or sucks money out of my account? What if my "income" comes not from a job, rather a will/trust account? Add to this Obamacare and recently, a state tax. I am frightened. I figure I'll pay until the day I die. How many years will that be? [more inside]
Wondering if the Hivemind has any recommendations for a CPA that has experience working with freelancers in the NYC area. I used to freelance and now have a 9-5, and I need some help dealing with the transition.
I own several rental properties in Columbus Ohio and I plan on expanding. My current CPA does not have much experience with real estate investors and is also slow in getting back to me when I have questions. How can I go about finding a CPA who is well versed in real estate, responds quickly to my questions? Thanks
I am really upset that we’re down to the last minute and my CPA has not finished my taxes or communicated with me since April 3. I haven’t paid him yet. I’m about ready to download Turbo Tax tonight and use his draft to double check. Would I still be obligated to pay him? What if I wait until tomorrow (which is going to make me extremely anxious)? I need an accountant in L.A., preferably somewhere between downtown and Mid-City. [more inside]
I've got some complicated taxes this year with two W2s and a few 1099s and living in multiple states. Yelp is not turning up anyone useful and the one local company I reached out to is not responding. I don't trust chains like H&R Block, but I don't mind a small company or independent professional. My budget is about $200-$250, might be able to do a little more. Boston, Dedham, Milton area preferred, but may be able to travel a bit further afield for someone with a great reputation. Recommendations are very much appreciated!
We have way too many filing cabinets taking up space in the home office and we'd like to digitize most of the contents and then shred the original physical items. I've read this document for retention best practices but it doesn't mention anything about digitizing. We're talking receipts, medical records, financial statements, etc. All sorts of goodies. In my mind, worst case scenario is we have to print out any records before submitting them but I could be totally wrong... Thanks!
I'm looking for a good CPA in Seattle, particularly one who understands self-employment and royalties. I went through one last year, and recent conversations online are leaving me with some doubt as to his proficiency. Suggestions? [more inside]

I'm running an event and have been using PayPal for a lot of payment processing for exhibitor booths, workshop fees, and assorted other items of varying amounts. Most items are invoiced, but we have a number that people purchased through PayPal buttons for specific items. I can't seem to find a way to easily download just a list of particular items that were purchased that includes the customers name. Am I missing something? Please let me know.
As we discuss our future together, and with other big changes afoot/underway, my boyfriend and I would like to see financial advice about some specific questions/scenarios but I'm not sure what kind of advisor we should be seeking out. [more inside]
I've had a difficult time figuring out my tax situation since I moved from the US and now I'm trying to get everything settled. I'm behind a few years and need someone to talk directly with the IRS on my behalf. Will I need an enrolled agent? A tax attorney? Both? Neither? Arg it's so confusing! [more inside]

Should I hire a CPA for my taxes this year? 1. I relocated for my job this year and received multiple relocation benefits. 2. I sold off stocks that were gifted to me and I do not have any cost bases for them because they were purchased so long ago. [more inside]

How can I find out whether or not my mortgage company is ripping me off? I thought about something like a "forensic audit" but I see via Google that that is the hot new scam, and I don't want to be taken for a ride (twice). I am not looking to modify my loan or get out of my mortgage, I just want to make sure that my payments (for which I pretty much always pay extra) are being applied correctly. [more inside]
I've read How to pick an accountant for your online business and I'm ready to find a CPA, but a little lost on where to start. Online searches tell me who is good at SEO, but not who is good at tax advice. The few people I know with similar work situations are still doing their own taxes. I was comfortable doing that before, but my tax situation has grown complicated this year. So I'm looking for recommendations from people in similar situations. [more inside]

Does anyone know of a good accountant/CPA firm in San Francisco with experience dealing with international freelancing work? I’ve done work from the Netherlands (but now live in SF) as a freelancer for U.S. companies and there’s a lot of things I’m not clear about regarding U.S. Tax law that I’d like to get properly sorted out once and for all. Looking for a recommendation for a good CPA or accountant in the DC, NoVA, or Southern Maryland area to field a set of somewhat-complicated questions about taxes. (Read: H&R Block is not going to cut it here.) The problem? All my close friends use TurboTax, and I'm reluctant to mass e-mail my entire contact list for recommendations, since I think the type of CPA (or accountant--is there a difference?) might matter in this situation and figuring out what flavor I need means disclosing more personal financial details than I'm comfortable with. A friend's been a tax lawyer of six years at a law firm. With that and a CPA, he wants to change careers: either manage investments or be a general mgmt type. What positions should he pursue, esp in this business clime? Recs for headhunters? He likes money, prestige, and is somewhat risk-averse. He's willing to go int'l, but only speaks english.
