Aces High(er): Pop/indie/dreampop/ethereal covers of metal songs

I've been listening to metal for nearly 20 years and lately I've gotten really into ethereal, dreamy, possibly sad or wistful covers of classic metal songs done by female singers. The Cardigans' covers of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Iron Man are getting close to what I want, but the instrumentation is not as sparse as I'd like. The original songs that scratch this itch probably stretch from Sabbath territory over to Iron Maiden, and less often into other metal subgenres. Please hit me with your best recommendations!

Not songs _about_ April Fools, but songs that _illustrate_ April's Fools

Working on the weekly radio show for Saturday, April 2 and looking for good songs to celebrate April Fools... not songs _about_ April 1, but songs that are themselves tricks, jokes, fake-outs and deceptions. Some examples... [more inside]

Cover me, bro!

I have been pretty sad about David Bowie's recent death return to his home planet. But then I listened to this gorgeous cover of Life on Mars by Sarah Blasko, and I felt better. So, gentle mefites, can you give me your favourite David Bowie covers?

Invitation to illustrate music program covers, no idea what to charge.

I was recently asked by the conductor of a well-known classical music ensemble if I'd be interested in illustrating the programs for some of his upcoming performances. A collaboration like this would be a cherry gig for me, and I'm very excited, but I'm worried about messing it up. [more inside]

Iconic album covers...

Doing a design project for a record store and am looking for iconic album covers that only feature text? For instance, Live at Leeds, Masters of Reality, or Ornette! would all be good examples. Looking for ones where if someone were to substitute other words, what was being referenced would be obvious. Thanks!

Lauren Bacall Me, Maybe?

My question is two-fold: I am looking for songs from the late 90's to now that would be good candidates for reinterprating in vintage Jazz styles from the 20's to the 40's. I am also looking for a name for this group--a portamentaou that combines the name of an entertainer from the 20's, 30's, or 40's with something from the modern era. An example would be "Lauren Bacall Me, Maybe". [more inside]

Mariachi inflected pop

I'm looking for indie pop with mariachi elements, specifically the soaring trumpet fills, but jangly acoustic guitar is cool too. Something in the vein of Calexico, but less folk-y more pop-y. Barring actual good music I'd gladly take recommendations for mariachi style covers. You know how there's albums of Bossa Nova style covers and reggae style? Someone must make mariachi style covers? Okay, screw it, I want cheesy pop hits of yesteryear transcribed into a mariachi idiom.

New wine in old bottles.

I am looking for late twentieth-century pop music covered in earlier styles. I know The Bryan Ferry Orchestra, I know The Puppini Sisters, I know Big Daddy (although that is kind of an edge case because the song and the style are only a decade apart, but it was a tumultuous decade musically). Tell me more that I have yet to learn about. [more inside]

Fiverr for cover design: yea or nay?

The designer who normally does my ebook covers is no longer working out. Creating my own covers is not an option for me given my current lack of design chops. Some members of my writing group suggested Fiverr as the go-to place for covers. Looking around there it seems there are some decent "gigs" that would serve my needs. However, I have some questions about Fiverr itself and about the possible knock-on effects of using Fiverr for graphic design. [more inside]

Help Me Find A Book

I am looking for a book that was published in the late 1980s. I cannot remember the title or the author, only that it is a memoir, and that the cover of the book (oft advertised in the New Yorker) had a small picture of a boy jumping between two rocks. The design of the cover was very much like this one for Lewis Thomas' The Fragile Species, with the picture of the jumping boy there in the center. The only other thing I can remember is that the author's name started with two initials, i.e. T R Something or A R Something. Please help!

Tell me more about/point me to sources about book cover materials.

It seems (could just be confirmation bias) that book cover/dust jacket materials have changed over the years. I find a lot of trade paperbacks and hardcover dust jackets now have a "soapy" feel to them rather than the previous plastic feel. What is this material? Is it new? What drives choices of materials?

Song Identification: Soulful cover of Summer Breeze

I heard a cover of the Seals and Crofts Song Summer Breeze while shopping in a mall store last week. Can you help me figure out who the artist was? It was in a mellow R&B style probably contemporary from the last 5 years or so, with kind of a hip-hop/reggae influenced groove, and (most likely) a female vocalist. The general mood was mellow and groovy and a little sexy.

instrumental covers on youtube that add something to the original

Suggest some technically competent YouTube artists who cover well-known songs on different instruments or re-arranged for a different genre. I love when someone takes a song I thought I knew, and shows me a whole different way to perform it. Vocals are okay as long as they're not shrill or cookie-monster growls, but instrumental is preferred, especially if it involves strings and/or double pedal bass. [more inside]

I'm looking for acoustic covers of techno songs, can you help me? Not necessarily acoustic, but using analog instruments, whether amplified or not (e.g. Clara Engel covers Born Slippy, Stance's ukulele cover of Harder Better Faster Stronger, Acoustic Instruments cover Star Guitar). Other electronic dance music genres also welcome.
