I'm looking for indie pop with mariachi elements, specifically the soaring trumpet fills, but jangly acoustic guitar is cool too. Something in the vein of Calexico, but less folk-y more pop-y. Barring actual good music I'd gladly take recommendations for mariachi style covers. You know how there's albums of Bossa Nova style covers and reggae style? Someone must make mariachi style covers? Okay, screw it, I want cheesy pop hits of yesteryear transcribed into a mariachi idiom.
I am looking for late twentieth-century pop music covered in earlier styles. I know The Bryan Ferry Orchestra, I know The Puppini Sisters, I know Big Daddy (although that is kind of an edge case because the song and the style are only a decade apart, but it was a tumultuous decade musically). Tell me more that I have yet to learn about. [more inside]
I'm getting a really nice queen-size bed in a few days and I want to outfit it with top-of-the-line, premium pillows, sheets, covers, blankets, and a world-class mattress pad. What's the best that money can buy?
The designer who normally does my ebook covers is no longer working out. Creating my own covers is not an option for me given my current lack of design chops. Some members of my writing group suggested Fiverr as the go-to place for covers. Looking around there it seems there are some decent "gigs" that would serve my needs. However, I have some questions about Fiverr itself and about the possible knock-on effects of using Fiverr for graphic design. [more inside]
But I'm pretty sure a woman (or, I guess, a band with a woman vocalist) has covered the Clash's "Lost in the Supermarket". Anyone know?

I am looking for a book that was published in the late 1980s. I cannot remember the title or the author, only that it is a memoir, and that the cover of the book (oft advertised in the New Yorker) had a small picture of a boy jumping between two rocks. The design of the cover was very much like this one for Lewis Thomas' The Fragile Species, with the picture of the jumping boy there in the center. The only other thing I can remember is that the author's name started with two initials, i.e. T R Something or A R Something. Please help!
I recently have become very fond of some vocal track only versions of pop and rock songs that someone had reversed engineered from DVDs and posted online, and I would like to find more music like this. [more inside]
It seems (could just be confirmation bias) that book cover/dust jacket materials have changed over the years. I find a lot of trade paperbacks and hardcover dust jackets now have a "soapy" feel to them rather than the previous plastic feel. What is this material? Is it new? What drives choices of materials?
I heard a cover of the Seals and Crofts Song Summer Breeze while shopping in a mall store last week. Can you help me figure out who the artist was? It was in a mellow R&B style probably contemporary from the last 5 years or so, with kind of a hip-hop/reggae influenced groove, and (most likely) a female vocalist. The general mood was mellow and groovy and a little sexy.

Suggest some technically competent YouTube artists who cover well-known songs on different instruments or re-arranged for a different genre. I love when someone takes a song I thought I knew, and shows me a whole different way to perform it. Vocals are okay as long as they're not shrill or cookie-monster growls, but instrumental is preferred, especially if it involves strings and/or double pedal bass. [more inside]
I'm looking for acoustic covers of techno songs, can you help me? Not necessarily acoustic, but using analog instruments, whether amplified or not (e.g. Clara Engel covers Born Slippy, Stance's ukulele cover of Harder Better Faster Stronger, Acoustic Instruments cover Star Guitar). Other electronic dance music genres also welcome.
