Ok, so...long story short, I am really having a hard time making rent for reasons outside of my control. It's due in a week, and despite exhausting every venue I can think of I can't come up with that money. [more inside]

I hired a marine contractor in Rhode Island to build a pair of centerboards for my boat ($12k). They were delivered 3 months late and didn't fit. I was very clear about the dimensions, yet the builder's designer altered the shape without consulting me. They've admitted fault in emails and in person, apologized, yet won't make the situation better. They offered a refund if I pay shipping charges to/from, customs and excise, and any damages. I don't feel I should pay $2k out of pocket and end up with nothing.
What do I do to get justice? Report them to the Better Business Bureau? Hire a lawyer? Go to court or arbitration? Say mean things about them and buy a voodoo doll? Am I entitled to damages beyond the $12k? Any advice welcome.

This is a follow up to this question
. I sued my landlord in small claims court (NJ) because I never received my security deposit (after breaking the lease 1.25 months early, but someone else moved in 1 week after I moved out). He did not show up to court on the court date, so I won by default. I now have to contact him within 7 days to ask for the money. What should that letter look like? How do I actually get money from him? [more inside]

Building off of the landlord theme from today...I posted
about this 5 0r so months ago. We assembled our paperwork, took advantage of some pro bono consultations, and then filed in small claims. But they were unable to serve her and last week I discovered that she's libeled us on the website www.terriblerenters.com. We're seeking an experienced counsel, but in the meantime need help thinking this through. [more inside]

Lugnuts-filter? Tire changer place torqued my nuts well past 200ft-pounds (spec is 73ft-pounds). 3 lugs are stripped, 4 nuts are cross-threaded beyond use, one lug nut is missing, and one lug sheared off entirely. What will I need to win in small claims court? (photo link within) [more inside]

A small construction company did work for a customer. Customer refuses to pay citing not 100% happy. Company disagrees greatly and believes job was well done and customer is being very unreasonable.
Company has detailed photographs, a signed contract and wants to go to small claims court to resolve matter.

My understanding is that to sue in NYC Small Claims Court, the defendant must live, work, or conduct business within NYC.
If the defendant does not live, work, or conduct business within NYC--though the claimant does--what's the proper court for a Small Claims Court type of lawsuit?
And this might solve it, too: If the defendant bought something from a store in NYC, is that conducting business?
