Should I file a contempt claim on my ex-husband?

My ex-husband hates me. I mean, REALLY hates me. I left him 4 years ago after years of emotional and verbal abuse, and he still has not once looked me in the eye or spoken directly to me since then. We have a 10-year-old daughter together and the divorce agreement says we should split her medical costs (doctor visits and prescription meds) 50/50. I emailed him to ask him to pay his share ($30) from a recent appointment and he emailed back saying that because he had taken her to get her hair cut, he should not have to pay. He then sent me pictures (!) of some over-the-counter cough drops he'd purchased for our daughter and demanded that I reimburse him for them, saying that if I refused I would "set a dangerous and vitriolic (sic) precedent in our relationship." What should I do? [more inside]

Tips for oral arguments in moot court?

So I've been selected to participate in a major moot court at my law school (to be judged by a member of the Court of Appeal), but I'm totally clueless about oral arguments (I was selected on the basis of my written brief). Does anyone have any practical tips to share with a first-time mooter? I've been told to speak slowly and answer all questions directly, but are there any non-obvious things that I should be doing/aware of as well? What would be the best way to pivot questions back to the main theme of my case? Any help/advice welcome!

What's my recourse?

I hired a marine contractor in Rhode Island to build a pair of centerboards for my boat ($12k). They were delivered 3 months late and didn't fit. I was very clear about the dimensions, yet the builder's designer altered the shape without consulting me. They've admitted fault in emails and in person, apologized, yet won't make the situation better. They offered a refund if I pay shipping charges to/from, customs and excise, and any damages. I don't feel I should pay $2k out of pocket and end up with nothing. What do I do to get justice? Report them to the Better Business Bureau? Hire a lawyer? Go to court or arbitration? Say mean things about them and buy a voodoo doll? Am I entitled to damages beyond the $12k? Any advice welcome.

First amendment, corruption, and McCutcheon

Not being a lawyer -- but being deeply interested in capture and corruption of government officials -- I'm very curious about possible knock-on effects of the recent ruling in McCutcheon v. FEC. In particular, the majority opinion states, a few times, that Congress can only target quid pro quo corruption. My question is, essentially, how broadly applicable is the ruling going to be? Is the context limited to campaign finance, or was Roberts really saying that there's no pressing government interest in going after non-quid-pro-quo corruption in any form or any context? Courtly behaviour

I have just finished Atoinia Fraser s biography on Marie Antoinette, and she talks in the beginning about the inter-relation of the French court with other European courts, esp. Holland and Austria, but also to a lesser extent England. She then talks about when Louis and Marie fled, they didn't seek aid in those courts, and none of those courts intervened explicitly or implicitly in rescuing the queen or her children. What's up with that?

Won by default in small claims against ex-landlord. How to collect? (NJ)

This is a follow up to this question. I sued my landlord in small claims court (NJ) because I never received my security deposit (after breaking the lease 1.25 months early, but someone else moved in 1 week after I moved out). He did not show up to court on the court date, so I won by default. I now have to contact him within 7 days to ask for the money. What should that letter look like? How do I actually get money from him? [more inside]

Need Help Finding an Expert Witness for Maltreatment of a Dog in NY

I took my dog to the vet clinic for what I thought was a simple spay but she almost died because of maltreatment and negligence. We ended up taking her to emergency and spent almost four thousand dollars. The doctor has refused to take responsibility for her actions. We have decided to sue her and will have our day in court next week. However we need an "expert" witness someone with a medical background that has a lot of experience with dogs to come or our case will not be heard. Hive could you help us find such an individual in NYC? We are willing to pay. [more inside]

Looking for web resource for Canadian court statistics.

How can I locate sources for statistics on the outcomes of Canadian criminal court cases, that include such data as type of defence counsel (ie Legal Aid, from large firm, high profile, new in field, or preferably cost of counsel), amount of time before trial, income/profession of defendant, sentence given, and sentence actually carried out? Does such data even exist? I'm only asking out of curiosity, not for any professional or education project.
