Can someone recommend a psychologist in Metro Vancouver who deals with adolescents and adults? My wife and I are at our limits with our 16 yr old who we believe may have some form of personality disorder. We would like her to get some counseling but she's adamantly opposed to it. We would like to get some professional advice ourselves on how best to deal with our family issues and possibly on how to convince her to go for counseling , but picking a name out of a phone book is too much of a duckshoot. I pick Mefi over the yellow pages!

The spouse and I would like to go to counseling together - not because of any problems in our relationship, but because we both have issues with being forthcoming in individual therapy and in initiating a dialogue with the therapist. We figure that if we went together, we could enable each other to open up and at the very least support each other through what is (for us anyway) an unpleasant experience. (And if it makes us a happier couple, that's just a nice side effect.) Does anyone have any experience with this sort of arrangement? Should we pursue someone who specializes in marriage counseling, or someone who specializes in individual therapy? We each have psychiatrists and are on medication for anxiety and depression - this is talk or cognitive therapy we're talking about. Thanks!

As a kid, at age 16, I was sexually abused. This continued until I was 18, and went to college. The guy is my stepfather, and I still run into him when I visit my mom, but we dont talk about it. I've been having bouts of reoccuring depression, and this is playing a large role. I think it's interfering with my schoolwork, however it comes and goes. When I feel ok, I hardly think about it anymore. I was thinking about using the university's free student counselling, but I dont want this guy arrested, because my mom doesnt know, and I dont want her to. I cant afford therapy that's not free. What should/can I do?

ShrinkFilter: I've been increasingly stressed, self-loathing and distracted for years, and (since my spouse and I are having a baby in a few months) have decided I need to Get Professional Help--mostly to figure out what's wrong with me and deal with it, so I don't pass it on to our kid. But "professional help" is a very big category, and I need to narrow it down. I want to find somebody whose perspective is "let's figure out the big problems and how you can fix them, as efficiently as possible," rather than "there's nothing wrong with you that years of expensive chatting can't prolong." I'd also like to avoid medication. How do I find the right... therapist? counselor? I don't even know what the right word is.

My apartment-mate has a rage problem. It used to be once a month or so he would have a tantrum that involved smashing dishes and lightbulbs, overturning furniture, tearing down posters, and ripping up papers. Lately it's gotten to be a weekly thing. I used to feel sympathetic and I talked with him about his problems, but I've lost my patience and I'm sick of being caught in this. Several of his friends have tried getting him to go see a college counselor but he won't go. If I could, I would just leave the apartment, but it's impossible until my contract is up in June. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting him to chill out when he's in the middle of a tantrum? Or any suggestions for convincing him to get counseling, try medication, anything?

Due to a few recent events in my life, as well as a number of incredibly stupid and hurtful things I now realize I've done, I've decided to seek counseling. My problem is I have no idea where to start, i.e., what kind of psychiatrists and psychologists there are, what types of questions to ask when looking to find someone to meet with, what the generally accepted approaches to counseling are, etc. I've spent a lot of time talking to friends about this, but am still feeling quite lost about the entire process.
There are a lot of sites with counseling information and advice, of course, and I've read many of them, but I keep getting the feeling I'm just dealing with professional organizations that are trying to feed their members or somewhat suspicious groups that aren't all that qualified to be doing what they say they are. So, what advice do any of you have for finding a good counselor? What good or bad experiences have you had in finding help, and what do you think are the best approaches to finding counselors?
Thanks!
