My husband's new job only offers one plan: a high deductible plan with $5,000 and $10,000 deductibles. We both have chronic illnesses with lots of medications and several doctors. We cannot afford to pay out of pocket for everything. What can I do? [more inside]

We're first time homebuyers, and getting a little overwhelmed thinking about all the things we might have to fix and/or replace in whatever house we buy, and how that should affect what we're willing to pay for a home. What are the most expensive (and/or frustrating to fix) things we should be keeping an eye out for and factoring into deciding whether to make an offer on a house and the offer price (i.e. adjusting up/down compared to comparable homes)? Unfortunately we did not win Powerball last night but it sparked an interesting conversation. Do wealthy (US) people have health insurance? I would think that once you hit a certain amount of wealth you could go ahead and drop it, right? Like $50 million or so? Which made us discuss how someone like Sunny von Bulow could be kept in luxurious surroundings for most of her comatose life. Would her family have paid out of pocket or are rich people dealing with same health insurance BS that the rest of us do? I mean she was in a coma for years, it had to have cost a small fortune.

My brother has been diagnosed with an acute form of leukemia, and is currently in the ICU. What we know is that he's not going to die tonight. He's got some life left in him. They're not sure about the precise form yet, that will take some time.
But in the meantime, we have a problem: he's 31, recently unemployed, and uninsured. My family is far from being able to afford out of pocket health costs. And from all the doctors, drugs, machines he's been hooked up to in the past 10 hours, I know the bill is already creeping into the many tens of thousands of dollars.
So my question to MeFites is: what are our options? How do we pay for this? We have very few assets, although I'm sure we'd sell the family home to keep my brother alive for a few more years. But apart from that, we've got nothing substantial. (I'm a graduate student, and my mother is a self-employed seamstress. My father is unemployed). Are there any gov't programs available? Can he go on Medicaid? Etc. I'm having trouble finding hard info on people in his particular situation (not a minor, not elderly, and diagnosed with cancer). Help!

My research group currently tracks our expenses (for lab supplies, travel, etc.) by printing copies of receipts and then manually tallying them in an Excel spreadsheet. Can anyone recommend a web service that will make this process easier? We'd prefer something free (or self-hosted), but are open to low-cost options as well. [more inside]

I went to the emergency room a few months ago for a back injury, and, to be honest, I don't feel like the medical services provided to me were adequate. I saw a doctor for about 45 seconds the entire time I was there. When I was leaving, they gave me information for "if my chest started hurting later," despite my protests that my back was the injured part, and the next day, I discovered the X-rays they had taken were of my chest, not my back. Now that I have the bill, can I contest it? [more inside]

This is a four-part question, in which I ask: how much profit does a merchant typically make on the following products and services: A $2.00 slice of plain pizza, a $5.50 cycle on a laundromat clothes washer, a $1.50 box of strawberries and a $0.25 cycle of 8-10 minutes in a laundromat dryer? Some less common types of building construction (e.g. Straw bale, earth, adobe, tires) seem like they would be cheaper than the standard balloon wooden houses that are built these days. Assuming you could find knowledgeable workers, which type would be the least expensive to build, but would still meet modern construction codes?

When the time comes, I'd like for it to be possible for me to stay at home for at least a year after a baby is born (I am not pregnant yet).
I guess this is two questions. First, how much should I have saved up to care for baby for the first year and secondly, how much should I have saved up to cover myself for the year? [more inside]

My SO and I recently got engaged. We're pretty chill folk, and are looking to have a medium-to-large wedding (150-200 people) but constrain costs to well under $10K. We have flexibility on timing and location, but we're aiming for MA/NH/VT/ME/RI of 2009. The question I want to ask of the married MeFi hive is: of the things you spent money on for your wedding, what was most worth it? What was least worth it?

Streaming radio production cost: what is the cost to a local radio station for internet streaming of one program to one listener? Not just the cost of paying the royalty cost of a national program (like Prairie Home Companion}, but the local costs incurred by the station, e.g. servers, software, staff time devoted to webcasting. Bonus question: is it more or less expensive than the cost of downloading a single podcast to a single listener?
