Travelling back to Canada with bugs?

Leaving the Arenal region of Costa Rica to return to Toronto today. We're staying in a lush, insecty area and there's tiny ants and spiders all over everything. Pretty positive they'll be plenty in our packed bags. [more inside]

Where to go for a February babymoon, someplace warm?

The husband and I would like to go on a trip in before we have our first child. Our ideal would be a relaxing and beachy vacation spot in the tropics (Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico?)—big bonus if it's a place we might want to return to in later years with our kid or kids! Specific resort/condo/hotel recommendations appreciated. [more inside]

Best option for accepting credit card payments in Costa Rica?

Hey guys, I have a business in Costa Rica that specializes in tourism and does about $20-$30K of business per month. Does anyone out there know of the best possible option for accepting credit card payments in Costa Rica? Right now we are working through paypal but its certainly not ideal (and neither is requesting cash from our clients). I have already seen and heard of some of these third party entities withholding funds and even denying funds in Costa Rica (and elsewhere). Also, some of the rates on these things look ridiculous. Any help is obviously greatly appreciated!

Overlanding from Los Angeles to Buenos Aires: tips or recommendations?

In August, my best friend and I (both 20-something guys) begin a 5 month adventure across the Americas. We started to research the trip last September, and have basically scoured the internet since then. Instagram has proved to be a great source to connect with the overlanding community and there's a couple of good blogs out there of people currently doing the trip. Still, we'd still really appreciate if the askmefi community could weigh in. As I start to put together a detailed itinerary I'm beginning to feel overwhelmed by all the details and possibilities. Where to go? What to plan? How much to budget? And, just generally, what level of detail should I plan to? Normally I'd come up with a broad plan in a few days and then wing it but given the dangers, sheer size of this adventure, and the amount of unforgettable places to see I want to really plan it. UNESCO sites, nature, must-see towns and villages... Can anybody help us? [more inside]

How do I care for this wooden art mask?

I have a nice hand carved wooden Boruca mask from Costa Rica that I got in 2011. Unfortunately, I've noticed that the wood seems to be drying out, and in some places, even cracking. I know it is authentic (e.g. not tourist crap from China) as it was bought at an indigenous reserve/cooperative and I saw them being made, but was not able to learn what kind of wood it was carved from (though likely balsa or cedar?) or get any instructions on care. It is unpainted, just solid wood. Any idea how to care for this piece of art? Does it need oiling? How would I do that?

Oh the places we could go...

My friend and I are trying to decide on a vacation destination (August '13), and we're looking at Puerto Rico or Costa Rica. We backpacked around Vietnam a few years ago and enjoyed the historical/cultural sights. Neither of us is a resort-loving tourist, so we're definitely looking for some destinations which are less sitting on the beach and more checking out some neat stuff. Can you help us decide? Cel Service/Sim Cards in Costa Rica

I'm travelling to Costa Rica for two weeks. I want to buy a prepaid sim card for my unlocked Samsung Google Nexus. The phone will be primarily used for navigation via Google Maps. Voice would only be used in case of emergency. I understand I can buy a sim card at the Liberia airport, but the providers website is exclusively in Spanish. Can anyone look and see what my options are for a prepaid data service? Anyone else have any experience with cel service in Costa Rica? We are trying to decide which is more economical, buying the Costa Rica map-pack for a Garmin GPS or using Google Maps.

Costa Rica in May?

There's a deal that looks inexpensive for a trip to Costa Rica in May, to Arenal and Matapalo Beach in Guanacaste. Usually the deals have some kind of catch to them, such as off-season rainy weather, or hotels undergoing construction, or something. I can't find anything bad about this one. Is there a reason not to go in May? Or should I start getting excited about going to Costa Rica?! [more inside]

Stopover between Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio in Costa Rica

In March we are going to be driving between Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio via 34 along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Google Maps says it's a four hour drive. We would like to break up the drive by stopping for a night somewhere enroute. We are renting houses on the beach at either end so seashore is not a priority. Ideally we'd like some kind of jungle/bamboo/eco hotel. Lots of flora and fauna. [more inside]

costa rica vacation advice

costa rica vacation advice? My fiance and I are leaving for costa rica in a week. Our plan is to rent a car and spend a week doing a loop around the Nicoya Peninsula: 3 nights in Tamarindo, 2 in Samara, 2 in Montezuma, 1 in Liberia, then fly back to the US. My question is: given this basic plan are either any "don't miss" items that you would suggest seeing/doing or anything that we should know or be prepared for. I'm hoping to hear from others who have done similar trips in this area and to learn from their experience. Thanks!

Help us get away!

My boyfriend, my father, and I are going to take a trip together in September. My boyfriend and I are in our early 30s, fairly active, and are interested in beaches, ruins, rainforests/jungles, white water rafting, and possibly scuba diving. My dad is in his late 50s, quite overweight (like probably 150-200 lbs overweight), and enjoys luxury hotels, relaxing, and fun stuff that's not TOO physically taxing. I haven't seen him in a few years, but he may be interested in white water rafting and scuba diving, if his weight isn't an issue. We're looking at somewhere in Central America, most likely Belize or the Yucatan, but we're also considering Costa Rica and are open to other suggestions. [more inside]
