Understanding FOIA responses from the Governmetn

I am working on a book about the public radio pledge drive, and I FOIAed federal agencies I thought might have given money to individual public radio stations or to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. CPB redistributes federal money to stations via a Congressionally mandated 75/25 split. [more inside]

FOIA or not?

Federal agencies that are fully taxpayer funded are subject to public records requests under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). If a non-profit receives money from the federal government, are the records of that non profit subject to FOIA?

Do Public Broadcasting Stations Keep ALL Public Comments

During fund drives, I'm always told the positive comments of listeners who support the mission of public broadcasting and the drives that pays for the public radio and TV stations to operate. As a contractor, do my taxes depend on where my payments get sent?

You are not my accountant. I am a 1099 contractor that works for a consulting company. I am meeting with my accountant next week to form an LLC for 2015. I will be getting paid for the month of December at around the same time. I will open a separate bank account for the corporation, but I will not be able to do it in time to have my first 2015 payment deposited into it, so it will get sent to my personal bank account as it does now. Will this cause any problems in 2016 when I'm doing my 2015 taxes? Or does it not really matter? [more inside]

How to succeed in business without ever flying

What categories of (or what specific) jobs and/or career paths in large corporations are least likely to require travel with turnaround and/or distance that necessitates flying? What types of industries (while otherwise thriving) seem to be paring down their travel budgets and relying more on videoconferencing and similar tech? What about government jobs? Are you a highly successful ........ and don't, or at least have never been required to, fly for work? I would love to know about your job. [more inside]

LLC vs S-Corp in New York State

I'm forming a company around an app, with myself as the sole investor and shareholder -- and my lawyers (based in CA) have advised me to go with an S-Corp instead of an LLC to avoid paying an extra $2k for New York's ridiculous "publication requirements" for LLCs. What's the catch though? I mean if this works, why doesn't everyone do it?

How to register a company name and if under LLC or Corporation?

Hello, I am currently developing a small food business. I am interested in selling my food on weekends at outdoor markets across the city. I think this is a good way for me to get my feet off the ground and see how people respond to my product. What I can't quite figure out is if it is too soon to start thinking about registering the company name and logo? If so, would I register my small business as a LLC business or corporation? I am a bit confused. Would someone be able to help? Thank you!

Tell me why I should or should not incorporate in Ontario, Canada

I'm a web developer in Toronto who is currently operating as a sole proprietor. A prospective new client would really like to hire me for a major new project, but they can only deal with incorporated companies and cannot hire a sole prop. I'm looking for advice on incorporating from a) people in Canada and especially Ontario, but also from b) anyone who has any relevant advice about the experience of becoming an Inc., even if you are not Canadian. Yes, I will be engaging an accountant or lawyer for specific advice if I do decide to move forward, so I'm not worried that some specific advice may not be appropriate for my jurisdiction: I'm just trying to get a broad picture of what it's like (and some recommendations for lawyers/accountants). Job Search Paralysis Thanks to Fear of Inability to Prevent Layoff From Next Job

I've been, for a while, what economists would call a discouraged worker; in most ways I gave up trying. Lately, I'm trying to marshal my spirit, resolve and grit together and get back out onto the job market. One of the biggest emotional problems I'm having is a fear of being let go again within a few months of this hypothetical new hire. Nothing is certain but death, taxes, and heartless corporations

How can we get into the apartment where my mother-in-law lived? My mother-in-law, Phyllis, was found dead of a heart attack in her apartment a week ago today. We live across town. There is no known will. We do not have a key to the apartment, nor does anyone else except the apartment management. We would like to enter the apartment to see if there's a will and to start going through her belongings. The manager says she can't let us in because the "management corporation" won't let her. We've tried calling the people above her, but they won't return our calls. We hired a lawyer. He has stressed the urgency of the situation to the apartment management, but they don't seem to be in a hurry to resolve this. What can we do? [more inside]
