Why doesn't my wine stopper work?

I'm accustomed to wine stoppers that look like this, but last night at the LCBO I was sold one that looks like this. It doesn't fit in either of my (presumably standard) wine bottles. How do I work this thing?

Recommend kitchen flooring that's green

I like cork flooring. Will my dog ruin it? Looking for ideas for kitchen flooring, preferably green* and not very expensive. Wacky ideas welcome.

*green - least environmental cost The subfloor is plywood, with ugly, beat up, vinyl tiles. I like commercial grade vinyl, but it's not green at all. Cork is warm and quiet underfoot, but I have a klutzy dog, and I'm worried it would get trashed. Same w/ bamboo. I don't want ceramic tile. I love real linoleum, but it's pricey.

By wacky, has anyone used reclaimed pallets? or? It may come down to what I can pick up on Craigslist. I expect this to happen no sooner than April so I have time to shop CL. A lot of recycled products are not avaiolable here, so would be costly to get.

Boarded Up

Tricking out a 4' x 8' cork board in my office I need your ideas, inspiration, toy suggestions, tools to make this large cork board functional, fun and attractive.

Before you say upholster it I would say that the sucker is bolted to the wall so me creating an all over upholstered look is out. This also means no circular saw to "shape" the board can happen either. It has a wooden edge as well.

Recent poetry, fiction, histories re: Cork, Ireland?

Recent poetry, fiction, histories re: Cork, Ireland? The question title says it all, except maybe to clarify: not looking for authors from Cork so much as stories about or set in Cork.

Even better if it's something that is likely to be on the shelves at a book store in the US.

Thanks.

TravelFilter: Things to do in London, Dublin, Cork. Places to stay in Dublin and Cork. Indian Restaurant recommendations in London. General restaurant recommendations for either London, Dublin, or Cork I'll be going to London, Dublin, and Cork in August. Do you have any recommendations for things to do? Or places to stay in Dublin and Cork? I know that there is good Indian food to be eaten in London, but I don't want to just wander around trying to find food. Other restaurant recommendations also appreciated.

Am I coming across as a wuss?

De-corking a bottle of wine. Slow and steady or just rip 'er out? When I de-cork a bottle of wine with a manual T-type folding corkscrew, I've always used slow twitch muscles in my wrists and gently ease the cork out in a single slow motion - except for the very end when I orbit the final couple of millimeters of cork out of the bottle. Total time, 3 - 4 seconds plus one more for the orbit.

No pop, no spill, no spray.

I was watching P2 (forgettable movie), and the anti-protagonist whips the cork out with a pop.

During this holiday season I've been assigned "wine-bottle-opener of the night" on a couple of occasions for rather arbitrary purposes (I was the first boy at the party and a bottle of wine needed to be opened, not really, but close enough).

Am I opening corked bottled wine like a wussy?

Fumbling for bubbly

WineFilter: How do I open a bottle of prosecco gracefully? I've recently realized I enjoy prosecco but I've noticed that some of the bottles have a cork that looks like the love child of a champagne cork and a regular wine cork - not flush against the top of the bottle like wine but not as big as a champagne cork. I've managed to become adept at champagne and wine opening, but these half-mushroom cap shaped corks are puzzling me. I can't get a good enough grasp to open like regular bubbly - is a corkscrew or other puller more appropriate?

I acknowledge my general clumsiness and prosecco newbieness so it may indeed be obvious. Thanks and cheers!

Irish dog license prank call

Irish prank call help! Does anyone know where I can find the recording of a man prank calling someone in (Cork?) Ireland regarding a dog license? The man is irate and claims that he has no dogs, then one barks in the background. I heard it this summer and thought it was a beaut, but I'm unable to find it online. Thanks.

Can I buy Irn-Bru in Ireland? By "Ireland", of course, I mean the large part which isn't in the UK.

In sixteen months I have yet to see so much as a single can of the anointed wonder drink on any shelf, either in Cork (where I live) or elsewhere. The "always-reliable" Wikipedia says more than once that it's on sale here.

Is there some corner store run by an expat which I've not seen yet? Or am I doomed to trying to import it?

Corked wine identification?

This wine's cork has gritty brown crystal and organic matter on the bottom. What is that? Is it bad? I don't want to drink it until i know... I just opened a bottle of 2004 Sweet Cheeks Winery Pinot Noir. The cork has weird stuff on it. I've googled as much as I can about this and i'm not sure it fits the definition of "corked" (it doesn't smell like a wet basement).
