Newbie video person here, having loads of trouble. I have some video files in .mts that I would like to edit in Windows Movie Maker (or, if I must, in iMovie) and then publish on YouTube or Vimeo. I need to convert them first, since they won't import correctly into either program. What free program do I use to do that, and what should I convert them into to make the editing and then uploading as pain-free as possible?

This year for Christmas, I'd like to get my parents the gift of converting all their VHS tapes to digital format. I'm a sometime video editor and effects artist, so I need a solution that's a) cheap, b) not too involved, workflow-wise, and c) meets my video nerd half's demand for quality. What's the best solution that fits all three?

Just returned from fabulous 2 week holiday in New York. I Brought back Epson Artisan 800 All-in-One Printer from Staples costing $230. Unfortunately, I cannot use it in U.K., unless I plug voltage converter/transformer products. Has anyone else bought this set over there with more success?
Any advice \ information appreciated.
Please specify me What exact voltage converter product to buy & where to buy it from USA online store. Thanks.

I am in need of a server-side Linux or Unix-based software solution that will sort uploaded PDF files that can be PDF-native (that is, created in such a way that the text in the PDF is freely copyable), PDFs with embedded text over images (usually the result of a previous OCR job), and PDF-scanned, which are PDFs containing no text, only scanned images. The PDF-native files and PDFs with embedded text it will extract text from, the PDF-scanned files it will then OCR and export that text.

I have a Electric shaver, Electric kettle and a Sandwich maker that uses 230V. They have round type pins in the plug. I would like to use them in USA. So I need to find a 110V to 230V voltage converter that also supports round pin plugs.
I found
this worldwide adapter plug in Amazon, and it seems like the idel thing I'm looking for except for the fact that it doesn't convert voltages. So if I can find something similar to this which converts from 110V to 230 v and vise versa it would be great.
If it's not possible at least a one that converts from 110v to 230v.
Please recommand me any converter that you are satsfied with and show me a place to buy.
Thanks in advance.

I just picked up a 1000W step-down converter (220V-110V) to power a receiver after a 750W exploded in a blaze of glory when I turned it on one morning. I'd very much like to avoid this kind of thing again. So my question is, is it relatively safe to keep step-down converters turned on at all times? If so, will it constantly be using 1000W of power even when the receiver is turned off? I've heard differing opinions but found no definitive answer on the interwebs.
Related, is it true that you should always have something plugged into the converter when it is turned on?

I would like to totally rid myself of VHS tapes. But I have about 40 of them that I'd like to transfer onto DVDs before I trash them. After that, I will never use a VHS tape again. What's the best route to go in my situation? Buy a VHS-to-DVD converter? Pay to have this done?
Most of it is stuff I taped off of TV years ago. Episodes of TV shows that have never come out on DVD, etc. Is it legal for me to do the transfer? It's not stuff that's for sale. I assume that it was legal (or in some legal gray area) for me to tape the stuff in the first place, so is it legal for me to make backups? I have no plan to sell them to anyone else. The quality is horrible, anyway. But I want to save them before they totally disintegrate.
