Is the non-profit I work for legally required to generate 1099 forms for all of the individuals who receive stipends from this org. and have filled out W9 forms (technically "independent contractors")?

I am currently working in the NY area for an employer that hired me a few months ago as an independent contractor. This employer just notified me that my position has been terminated (without cause) due to budgetary reasons, with termination effective in one week. According to my contract, either party is supposed to give 30 days notice prior to termination or resignation. There is no indication within the contract regarding payment in lieu of notice. Do I have any recourse or reasonable expectation of some form of compensation considering that I have been given only one week's notice?

My wife starts a new contracting job next week. I am looking for a good calculator to formulate how much should be set aside for taxes. I've Googled with no good solution. Is there a formula you use? If you are an independent contractor do you have any tips?

Are there any good websites with information about being an independent contractor? Google is failing me.

IndependentContractorFilter: So I've landed a gig doing some contract programming, except we don't actually have a signed contract yet. Before I sink any more time (existing time being this afternoon) into it, and before I deliver anything, I want one, obviously. Does anyone know of any example programming contracts online I can crib from? All the obvious search words are so over-represented on the Web that my Google results are uselessly noisy.
