We have begun building a house, we have the plans, the lot and the builder. No ground broken yet. We signed the contract with the builder. When securing the financing, we were told that the builder has several liens and they will not finance us if we use him. Based on the title search, they said no bank would give us money if he is involve. Could he win if he sues for breach of contract? Can we legally back out of this contract in light of these circumstances?

A contractor is planning to come out this week and replace a substantial portion of my driveway. It (was and) will be a concrete driveway. The same contractor ('s father) will also be doing a substantial amount of tuckpointing. I live in Cleveland and as you know this is mid-November. Should I be concerned about the cold/snow/rain affecting the durability of their work? What should I expect them to do to adapt to the weather? Should I just try to get them to wait until Spring?

I'm looking for some referrals for a few good skilled trades-people in Portland, Oregon. I just bought my first home and I want to be prepared when issues come up (as they already have), so I'd like to find Metafilter's favorite roofers, plumbers, carpenters, general contractors, etc in the PDX metro area.

Is there an 'ask metafilter' on the internet for home/yard projects? Not that I'm disputing the collective mind here, but I'm looking to build something in my backyard and it seems to me there must be some group of contractors who all get together somewhere on the internet to tell amateurs that they're doing it wrong. Of course if you KNOW how to install a yard retaining wall, then, by all means, speak up.

Construction / Contractor Filter: So a month or so back some asshat ran into my house and took out a section of wall. Help me, my insurance adjuster, and the contractor figure out what the hell this orange 1/4" tube is running through the wall.
