A contractor I hired set up a number of sub-contracts with individuals- over 500 of them- each of whom received a background check to make sure they were OK to work in a very public program. We discovered that Guy A had a different person (Guy B) fill out all the paperwork to participate. The contract is in Guy B's name, with all his information except the phone number for Guy A. We accepted Guy B into the program, Guy A did the work, and now Guy A wants to be paid. Do we owe him anything?

I recently took a job on contract that's turning out to be not what we agreed in the interview. I've been there two weeks, and already they say that they don't accept the old contract and are drafting a new one. I don't feel good about this, and wonder if it's reasonable to walk away.

I'm involved in a group of small/nonprofit organizations that would like to financially support the starting of an open-source software application. While I am technically-minded, I'm not a programmer -- and I don't really know what to look for in one (hopefully to be found on MeFi jobs!). Help greatly appreciated.

Freelance Filter: I've resigned due to timeline pressures, the arrival of another awesome opportunity, and the fact that I'm 8 months pregnant. I've done six weeks of work which have contributed social capital and goodwill to the project, and organizational/planning work which will be of benefit to my replacement. The "contract" we signed was vague and was only really a statement of work, rather than conditions. In my letter of resignation I proposed to keep 20% of the 1st payment for the work done to date. The team that hired me wants all the money back, I think mainly because they're deeply disappointed that I have quit. It's not like I've been sitting on my hands, and my work to date will benefit them. Before I hand over all my work to date and write the cheque to refund the 50%, how should I word my request that they reconsider allowing me to keep a portion of the fee? (Giant background story included, to explain the usual & unusual complications which lead to my departure.)

I am a freelance video editor and I am being asked to work on spec (as in do the work and the producers will pay for my work if they like it). I want to draft some sort of contract outlining what I am doing, and their use of my work if they do like it, but I don't know exactly what I should include in a contract like this. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I want to include a sample sale-and-purchase contract in a book that I am writing. Do I need to get the approval of the lawyer (or firm) who first wrote the contract? How do I find the copyright holder? And could I resolve this by creating a composite of several different contracts?
Thanks in advance.

I've been asked to contribute to a collection of op-ed/essays/creative nonfiction type stories, to be published together as a book. I have no idea how this stuff works, but I know the release form says I won't get paid. Anybody have any experience with this kind of thing? Is this a normal clause for a first-time author who barely even counts as an author?

Will the Korean doctor rob me blind?? Here's the long and short of it... my father is the doctor that pioneered tumescent liposuction. he teaches his techniques to other doctors on a regular basis and manufactures the tools and equipment involved with the procedure.
Recently, a doctor from Korea, I'll call him Dr. Lee, took my father's course and liked it so much that he expressed an interest in teaching the course in Korea and to sell my fathers products in his courses. My father is very interested, but feels concerned that he must submit all of his technical files to Dr. Lee so that he can submit them in an application to the Korean FDA for approval.
