How much is fair contribution to broken oven door? (UK rented apartment)

Hi - outer glass shattered on our oven door. Google suggests this does sometimes happen without provocation (oven is approx 7yrs old). Housing contract (London, UK) stipulates tenant responsible for 'broken glass' but I presume this refers to windows. Letting agents got quote of £220 for new door panel. New oven costs £295 and they prefer to do this. Ask I contribute 40% (£120). Is this a fair deal - should I negotiate lower? Thanks!

Why does health club agreement waive my litigation rights?

The "health club" in my apt. building (some free weights, a few weight machines, treadmills, ellipticals) requires tenants to sign an agreement, the first two clauses of which involve litigation: The first says, paraphrasing, I hereby release, waive, discharge and covenant not to sue the management co., owners, employees, etc. from all liability to me and anyone with me for any loss or damage on account of my injury or death caused by the exercise equipment, negligence of the company, etc. [more inside]

Please help me find a good Drupal developer to pick up the pieces

Ok hivemind, you've helped me once before, I hope you can do it again. I volunteer for an NPO that hired a less than competent development shop to create a very specialized membership database using Drupal. That includes migrating from a Filemaker database and a whole bunch of thoroughly detailed specifications for enrollment, payment systems, membership management, member profiles, various back office reports, event calendaring, conference scheduling, etc. etc. These specs describe the functions we want and I think they are clear. What's next for us? How do I find someone good to finish the job? How does bidding for a job like this work? [more inside]

Is it legal for my landlord to do this?

My lease, like most, says that subleasing is not allowed without manager's consent. I came in on a sublease and later let the manager know I was planning on subleasing. She just declared she will not accept any subleasing any more. Does anyone know if this is legal for her to do this? It's breaking faith, but not breaking the literal contract. FYI, I live in Missouri.

iPhone Recall Loaner: Can I Just Keep It?

I went to get my 16GB iPhone 5 repaired or replaced under the iPhone 5 Sleep/Wake Button Replacement Program today, and after some testing and such I was issued a loaner phone (also a 16GB iPhone 5) and told that mine will be repaired in about 6-8 days. I think I'd like to just keep the loaner, and it seems like that may not be encouraged but may be possible... [more inside]

Do I ask for a raise?

Do I ask for a raise? My long-term contract is being renewed for the second time, and for the second time on the "same terms", i.e. no increase in my hourly rate. I'm torn between asking for a raise because "I should" - my role and responsibilities have expanded greatly over time - and accepting the offer because, well, I'm not going to leave over this and based on my cursory knowledge of similar positions elsewhere I'm still paid competitively. And I don't want to make a fuss. [more inside]

Looking for a legal term of art: Assumption? Ratification?

You have a contract with Company A, which goes bankrupt. Company B buys the assets and continues operating under the original contract with you. Assuming that Company B did not simply acquire the contract in the bankruptcy, what is the term for what happened? Did Company B adopt the contract? Assume it? Ratify it? Thanks!

When is a contract not a contract?

If a contract on a house is signed 'subject to finance, building and pest inspection', what does that actually mean? If the buyer wants to pull out of the contract, must they provide proof that they were not approved for finance? And how much needs to be wrong on a building inspection before the contract can be broken? I guess what I'm trying to ask is, is a contract just to protect the buyer, or does the seller have rights too?

Want to quit but don't want to look like a jerk on my resume.

I was going to write a long explanation of why I want to quit, but really, none of it matters. I'm a PM in Advertising - I have worked at small agencies and probably never want a long term, real FT gig at a big shop. I would be okay contracting at a place like that. If I decide to quit this job, I will likely do so in favor of a contract, and will likely avoid a real FT gig for some time due to agency burn out (unless I get an offer from a known quantity, which is a possibility but not a certainty). All in all, I'd much rather be without anything to do and the option to do what I'd like instead, rather than where I am now, which is nothing to do and ready to lose my mind. [more inside]

How do you interview for a Company Representative?

I have a meeting with an overseas company, to discuss their need for an east coast representative. They are expanding. It is a high-end, energy efficient product. I have some knowledge in the area, and the product, but more as a consumer, never as a rep, (with ANYONE) We have worked together a bit, but this would be a new role, relationship. I need some clues on how this might go; how might it be structured? what will they expect? how is compensation figured? I am inclined toward keeping my mouth shut, listening, and asking a few relevant questions. Interview hints 101.

Laying the Golden Egg: Employer unilaterally shifting my contract.

I took a job which I initially really enjoyed and was doing well at in a small company, by far exceeding standard targets across a variety of measures. Shortly after my six month review, my employer has began to play loose with the terms of a pretty weak contract, and it's impairing my performance as I weigh whether I need to shift my own priorities. Is this symptomatic of problems ahead or just a lack of business sense that I can leverage myself sufficiently to deal with? What is my next move and how do I go about it? [more inside]
