Is there more than monochromatic minimalism?

Hey clothes-loving folks! I've been reading about capsule wardrobes, paring down clothing, and other minimalism-type posts My question is- does anyone know of a good post on capsule wardrobes/minimalism that has color in it? What can I do and can't I do about climate change?

Ever since the XKCD post on global climate change, I've had a chicken-little sky-is-falling mindset that has influenced just about every realm of my life. What's the point of saving for retirement if the earth melts? How can I work for a corporation that produces goods at an industrial scale? Which bag of quinoa is better for the environment? Paper or plastic? Please help me get past this paralysis and back to life. [more inside]

In search of consumerism-neutral time-wasters

So, like many people, when I need a break at my desk I tend to look for something mindless on the Internet. I'm trying to get out of the habit of defaulting to fashion and beauty forums, which I like because they're low-effort, have pretty things to look at, and tend not to get me worked up about politics or whatever, but hate because I get the impulse to buy things I don't need. It's not causing a financial problem but I just don't want my time-wasters to lead to a shopping spree. [more inside]

What are some futuristic consumer products you know?

I am looking for futuristic everyday consumer products that are the result of advanced research and development. Like stuff made for space travel, or extreme environments and situations, e.g. the Fisher Space Pen, highly functional workout clothes, Soylent, etc. Basically products that makes you think you're living in the future. Industry doesn't matter.

Consumable Commodity Geography Project-- Interesting Global Product?

So, I'm taking a course about the geography of economic activities. For a project, we're tasked with picking a "packaged food, a cleaning product, or a personal care product" (per the instructions). We are then tasked with using the label and the manufacturers' customer's hotlines to determine "where that product is manufactured; second, what inputs/components/ingredients are used to make the product; and then, where do those inputs/components/ingredients come from." Lastly we're supposed to creatively visualize our findings, most probably in map form. [more inside]

Why do Big Store foods taste different?

I'll phrase this in a way to avoid legal problems or simple unfairness. I've noticed that certain foods and drinks I buy from The Big Store differ from the same items when I buy them from a Small Store. The items are the same brand with same description on packaging. But they just seem different in how they taste, feel, or spoil. Any insights on how and why this happens? [more inside]

Looking for some good documentaries on advertising, marketing, public relations & consumerism to help teach an undergraduate class! We have a list of possible documentaries already (we will show selected excerpts - not the entire thing) but were wondering if we were missing anything out and what the Hive Mind might suggest! Good "teaching moment" video clip suggestions based on Mad Men and other fictional advertising/marketing/PR/consumerism-themed films and TV shows are also welcome. Or perhaps there are even good relevant scenes from documentaries which are primarily about some other topic. Thanks for any help... it's much appreciated! Full list that we already have compiled inside... [more inside]
