For career and appropriate tech: Should I be an electrician or plumber?

I'm currently in the application process for the plumbers/pipefitters and electricians unions in my area. I'm trying to decide which one I'd prefer, if I get a choice. I like that both are licensed trades where I could work on big industrial/commercial projects but also have good residential skills. Also, I'm interested in alternative/appropriate/transition technology -- and I'm wondering which trade would give me more versatile skills for that sort of application. Any advice on which trade might give me more skills to make appropriate tech? [more inside]

How to best resolve a seemingly rigged speed trap situation?

We got caught in an insane speed trap in a small Illinois town with a seemingly inactive construction zone. We had to post bond from the car, got a mandatory court date (400 miles away from our home of Chicago), looking at $1100+ in fees. Any ideas? [more inside]

What Would OFFICER Gladys Kravitz Do About the Bad Neighbour?

Please help me to find, and to understand Toronto's Construction and Parking By-Laws, and then how to have them enforced and upheld strictly, quickly, and legally in order to protect our rights, our property and our peace of mind. I have been to the city's website, and have downloaded Chapter 363 Building Construction and Demolition and am trying to understand how to apply the information in it. I've Googled, and have written to the City Planner and our local Councillor's office for information and advice - but know from experience that their responses take days if not weeks and I see that we will sometimes need to immediately effect change. Jokingly mentioning to the construction workers "Please kind to your neighbours!" isn't working. I need to take Gladys Kravitzing to the next level. [more inside]
