All or nothing bowel movements? Detailed stool descriptions ahead.

For the past 8 months I have been having substantial bowel movements only about once every 5 to 7 days. These substantial movements are ... big. Like it appears to be literally 5-7 days worth of movements all at once. Doctor suggested more fiber, this just gave me gas and did not help. What's up, does this line up with some IBS style and is this a thing to elevate to a GI doc? [more inside]

Do baby probiotics work?

I have a four month old breast-fed baby who poops every five or six days. I know that's normal, but she's very uncomfortable and sleeps terribly on the last day or two. I've heard that baby probiotic drops help, but they are so expensive. Before I start spending $30 a month to get my baby to poop I want to know if they're actually effective. So, on a scale of (1) amber teething necklace to (10) baby Tylenol, how well do they work to prevent baby constipation?

Young, 24 year old woman suffering from chronic constipation

I was wondering if anyone knows what my digestive system/ body is struggling with: I am almost 24 years old. I have a very stressful teaching job, and sometimes I don't eat very well because I don't have access to a supermarket. But, even before I started this job, I began to suffer from constipation. I only experience a bowel movement on average once every four days (often it takes a week.) My father has Crohn's disease, and I have been to see his doctor. His doctor told me that he sees a lot of young women with this problem, and he recommends that I take miralax regularly. I take it about once every other day, and occasionally drink Senna tea. But it doesn't always help. I have trouble particularly the week before my period. Have any other young women experienced this kind of thing? Is it as common as my doctor says? Does anyone have "home remedy" advice that actually works well?

What sub-specialist do I speak with to get a dietary plan together?

After years of stomach issues I believe I have found the one food that makes me do a #2 once a day like a normal person. I assume I should talk to a dietician in order to get more information about this success, and to get further recommendations on a long-term diet plan. But is there some sub-specialty of dietician that deals only with these types of digestive issues I should be speaking with? [more inside]

Sh!t or get off the pot - Pooping in the presence of others

I, female age 35, cannot poop when others are in the house or when other people are in a public bathroom. (And I loathe even going in a public bathroom.) This means that when there are houseguests, I end up constipated. I have recently been in travel situations with one other person and I end up spending the whole trip constipated. It is even worse with a newer dating partner. What can I do to relax and poop? [more inside]

Help me to have harder bones without harder poop.

Friday my doctor informed me that I have osteoporosis and am at high risk for spinal fractures. I'm now taking the generic of Fosamax and my doctor has recommended that I supplement my daily diet with 1500 - 1800 mg of calcium and 2000 units of vitamin D3. While I'm not questioning the need for added calcium, I'm worried about the constipating effect it will have. I've tried taking calcium and vitamin supplements in the past (brand names like Centrum and Tums) but quickly gave them up because of problems with constipation. [more inside]
