I'm an amateur classical pianist. I used to give solo recitals at college, and I would like to start performing again out here in the real world. But what sort of group/organisation/event do I need to get involved with to have this kind of opportunity? Having just been to a concert last night, I thought the whole tradition of the 'encore' was a little silly. I can't recall a performer ever not coming back to stage and belting out another few songs. Where did the encore come from? What are perfomers doing during their short "break?" Has anyone ever been to a concert performance where there wasn't an encore? Did rioting ensue?
