## Math review for wannabe computer science student

Next semester, I will be taking a university class on the mathematical methods used in studying computer science. My last math class was a very, very long time ago. What topics should I review in the next month so that I won't be totally lost in my class? [more inside]

## Turns out I really like math...

How can I continue to study it? [more inside]

## Looking for sites or books like Cosma Shalizi's notebooks

I really like the short explanations and exhaustive trove of links found in Cosma Shalizi's notebooks. Are there any other similar sites or books out there? [more inside]

## How to Math

I'm a computer science major in college. I'm not a freakin' genius, but I do well-- get A's in my classes, good with abstraction (e.g. pointers), etc. However, I seem to have missed... my entire high school pre-Calculus math curriculum? I don't know. [more inside]

## Netherlands Master's in education vs teaching experience in Asia, which?

I have a B.Sc in computer science and have one year of experience English using my CELTA qualification. Looking around, I see a lot of requests for people with North American B.Sc's to teach Math/Physics/CS in Asia. I'm trying to decide whether to go and start teaching, or whether it is better to get a state teaching qualification (2yr) in the Netherlands first... [more inside]

## Does it ever make sense to get a second undergrad degree?

Ages ago, I posted this question. Sadly, I'm still stuck in pink collar admin hell and still looking for a way out. I'm not interested in climbing the ladder to get past the admin assistant jobs - I want to get away from this world altogether. More education seems like the only option, but my terrible undergrad record means that graduate school is out. [more inside]

## Which data structures changed the world?

In my last question, I asked for algorithms that changed the world. Now I'd like to know,

**what are the data structures that changed the world**? [more inside]## Which algorithms changed the world?

A recent post to the blue proposed a set of equations that changed the word. As a computer professional, I'm curious, which algorithms transformed the world? [more inside]

## Career advice for math major (also competent programmer)?

I like math. Programming is OK, but I don't want to make it my thing. What careers should I be looking at? (Special snowflake details inside.) [more inside]

## I want to be able to read CS and math research papers with ease.

I often find myself crossing interdisciplinary lines and reading research papers, trying to understand some new practice or algorithm in math or computer science. I start out thinking "I just need to understand these basic concepts and I'll crack this", but end up with a very tired brain at 5am, having tried to mainline dense trees of Wikipedia and ~~Eric Weisstein's~~Wolfram MathWorld, and still not feeling like I retained everything. ## Recommend a programmer a book that teaches high school maths step by step

Can you recommend a programmer a book that teaches high school maths step by step? I did maths at high scool and I was OK at it. However, fifteen years later, after forgetting almost all the maths I learnt back then, I am diving deep into the theory of programming algorithms (sorting, tree structures, graph algorithms and so forth). I find the programming straight forward, but I am struggling with the theory and proof of algorithmic time and space complexities. I am looking for a book that will cover algebra, logs, limits, inductive proof, matrix manipulation and so forth. [more inside]

## Recommend me a book on Cryptography/Cryptanalysis!

I get to teach myself Cryptography for a class, please help me pick my book! [more inside]

## How are we different from patterns in data?

What are some good writings on the relationship between what we think of as the physical world and the world of mathematical abstractions (the space in which, for example, all possible sequences exist) ? [more inside]
